Chicago Cubs vs. New York Yankees Preview, Saturday 6/18, 3:10 CT: Reunion

Long ago and far away, or so it would seem, A.J. Burnett and Ryan Dempster were teammates with the Florida Marlins. That lasted three and a half years, from 1999 until Dempster was traded to the Reds. They just missed being minor league teammates, too; Dempster was a year ahead of Burnett in the Marlins' minor league system.

This will be the first time they have faced each other as pitching opponents. It's not quite the matchup that Dempster had against his friend and former teammate Ted Lilly earlier this year (on April 23, won by Dempster even though neither pitcher threw very well), but it does show you again how interconnected players throughout this game are. The recent edict from MLB to try to reduce pre-game fraternization on the field is just silly. Everyone knows these players are friends, many for a lifetime. Once the plate umpire calls "Play!" everyone also knows that these friends will compete hard against each other, as Burnett and Dempster will this afternoon.

The Cubs are on a bit of a nice run, four of five and six of ten. Let's keep it going.

Cubs lineup:

Fukudome rf, Castro ss, DeWitt 2b, Ramirez 3b, Pena 1b, Johnson cf, Soriano lf, Soto c, Dempster p

Yankees lineup:

Gardner lf, Granderson cf, Teixeira 1b, Rodriguez 3b, Cano 2b, Swisher rf, Martin c, Nunez ss, Burnett p

A.J. Burnett last pitched against the Cubs on June 13, 2008 when he was with the Blue Jays. I post that boxscore mostly to note that only four players who played in that game (Aramis Ramirez, Kosuke Fukudome, Geovany Soto and Reed Johnson) are still on the Cubs. Ramirez is 4-for-13 lifetime vs. Burnett; the Cub who has faced him most is Carlos Pena (5-for-35, one double, one HR).

Ryan Dempster started several games against the Yankees when he was with the Marlins, ten and more years ago; those are largely irrelevant now. The only current Yankees who have more than six career PA against him are Russell Martin (4-for-17) and Andruw Jones (13-for-40, .325, two doubles, two HR).

Today's game is on Fox. It's basically on nationwide except for the deep South, from Tennessee and North Carolina south to the Gulf Coat and west through Texas, except for the south half of Florida. Here's the complete coverage map. Unfortunately, we are stuck with Joe Buck & Tim McCarver. There's always the mute button. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Why DeWitt

Goodness, anyways, beat the Yankees.

They seem to be winning when he plays, don't they?

With the 1st pick in the 2012 Baseball Amateur Draft, the Chicago Cubs select...

by Easy Ed on Jun 18, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

If you knew the answer to this...

you would have posted the record yourself. DeWitt has a -0.03 WAR, which means you could just replace him with any random player and get more production. He also has a WPA (win probability added) equal to Tyler Colvin, for those who think DeWitt should have ever played in front of him. I don’t put a ton of relevance into the stat (for example, Marlon Byrd’s is even worse, and I can’t even say he played that poorly), but players who actually contribute to wins generally have a positive number, and his is -0.42. To anybody who bothers to look it up, playing DeWitt this much, especially in the outfield, costs the Cubs wins.

Man...

seeing Dewitt hitting 3rd trips me out and makes me think about how lacklustre our lineup is, but somehow we’ve gotten the job done over the last 5 games.

by Craig in South Bend on Jun 18, 2011 1:07 PM CDT reply actions

I think Quade figures ...

that Kosuke is best leading off, that Castro puts too much pressure on himself hitting third, that Aramis is better fourth and that Pena hitting fifth breaks up the righty dominance.

So, left with few other options, Blake DeWitt hits third. Not because he’s good enough to hit there, but because everybody else does better in other spots.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Jun 18, 2011 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

There are 5 better options in the lineup

3 given your caveats. But there’s research that states that the #3 spot isn’t as important as we thought, so I don’t really spend too much time worrying about it.

I have a problem with it.

DeWitt had a decent run but it is over. He has gone from He has dropped 37 points off the batting average in the last 10 games. You would think DJ could get a few starts.

by Grockcubs on Jun 18, 2011 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's keep it going???

Definitely. The past week my interest in this team has peaked after the dismal play earlier in the season. We need a win streak that lasts a few weeks. The way the Cards, Brewers and Reds keep losing we could get in the race in a hurry. I would be so damn happy to be 4 out at the all star break it would at least make the end of summer much more meaningful.

Let’s get this one today…..I think I will enjoy Pat Hughes with the tv sound off.

These sorts of things are why I'd be fine with Quade getting canned at the end of the season

He’s made some bizarre decisions with the lineups and his pitching management hasn’t exactly been stellar. This season has been a bad year as far as injuries go and that should be taken into account in the offseason, but Quade still makes a good deal of boneheaded decisions.

The Yankees 13 times on DL still leaves them with a top tier

2B, 3B, 1B, ace pitcher, and CF…combined I’m 99% sure those 5 combine to be paid more than some random team’s payroll…maybe the Royals.

Some would call them good times. Nothing worse than watching an overpaid, old, beaten team limp it’s way through a season, even if they pull off alot of wins doing it. Those Yankee teams were comedy gold.
