Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox Preview, Tuesday 6/21, 7:10 CT: Tickets Still Available

Not only are tickets available for tonight's Cubs/White Sox game at the Cell, a lot of good seats are still out there, including tickets in all price levels. On StubHub, about 1100 tickets are for sale, many below face value.

There are likely several reasons for this, including the performance of the teams and the fact that this series is being played on weeknights (it's the first Cubs/Sox series ever where all three games are night games). But the biggest reason has to be the current economy and the prices of the tickets. Despite some large crowds at certain interleague games over the weekend, many teams still aren't drawing (the cross-state Marlins/Rays matchup drew about 63,000 -- half what the Cubs and Yankees did at Wrigley Field).

Maybe if one or both of these teams were in contention, sales would be more brisk. Absent that, prices are way too high for most of these tickets. They're likely to have about the same size crowd tonight as last night, maybe even a bit smaller.

Cubs lineup:

CF Johnson, SS Castro, DH Baker, 3B Ramirez, C Soto, LF Soriano, 1B Pena, RF Montanez, 2B LeMahieu

White Sox lineup:

Pierre LF, Vizquel 2B, Quentin RF, Konerko 1B, Dunn DH, Ramirez SS, Pierzynski C, Rios CF, Morel 3B

Both of tonight's pitchers have thrown no-hitters in the past.

Matt Garza, though, has not had success against the White Sox. In four career starts he's got a 6.87 ERA, although he did throw six shutout innings against them when he was with the Twins, on July 6, 2007. The two Sox who hit him best are Paul Konerko (3-for-8, one HR) and A.J. Pierzynski (5-for-8, one HR). Let's hope for better results tonight.

Mark Buehrle has dominated the Cubs in recent years; he hasn't lost to them since 2007 and threw 6.2 scoreless innings against them at Wrigley Field on June 12, 2010. Reed Johnson has pounded Buehrle in the past -- 10-for-27 (.370) with three doubles. Reed's been hot lately, so let's hope for more of that.

Today's game is on WGN (Len & Bob) and CSN Chicago (Sox announcers). Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

This pitching matchup doesn't look promising.

Buehrle is always good, and Garza was a bit shaky in his last start against Milwaukee. But hey, the great thing about baseball is you never know what will happen until you record the final out.

Isn't Garza known for coming up big...

…in the spotlight? Glass half full here…

But you’re right about Buehrle, that guy always has me worried.

Last night was awesome...

watching the game and lurking (and not typing a word) over on South Side Sox. After the Pena bomb, it was like Hawk Harrelson in text. Then there was this guy who musta been popping over on BCB who would copy and paste stuff that was being written…it was hilarious. I hope for the same sorta fun tonight as well. Pretty vulgar over there…but comical.

Hopefully Garza goes hard today.

You will take you nickname and you will like it

Last December when I was with New Orleans, our fat punk kicker, Garrett Hartley, missed a game-winner and we lost for the second week in a row – that was one of the times you want to grab a guy and tell him to [bug ] off," Fujita said. "But Hartley was young, and I didn’t want to mess him up for good, so I just bit my lip and said, ‘Hey, man, don’t worry about it — it was a team loss,’ which of course was a total lie."

It would seem to the Cubs advantage that Juan Pierre and Omar Vizquel will be getting the most at-bats for the Sox.

Al, I rip on you for MANY a thing, but the start of the article

explaining the reasons for the non-sellouts, well, I find that to be really decent and even “non-partisan” given the current ticket sales situations of both our teams. One little thing though- the forecast of major T-storms should have also been mentioned. It’s been a major factor for cheap Stub-hub seats for both teams this year. I’ve had clients who are of both persuasions who I’ve tried to do tickets for, and I’ve noticed a dramatic drop in ticket price for both teams as the game gets closer (like 2-3 days) if the forecast is for crap. I’m going to be interested in seeing what the ticket prices on Stub-hub are for the series up at Wrigley (I’m also going to keep in mind that it will be a weekend series, for future arguments sake.)
Sox fans and Cubs fans will go out, no matter the season record. But if it’s raining and cold, well, it seems both fans have enough sense to stay at home.

Well, most of us. I still went tonight.

Thanks.

Ticket sales being down is a major story this year, not just in Chicago but all across MLB. I’ll be interested to see what attendance is like for the series at Wrigley.

As of now tickets appear to be available in most price levels for all three games, including bleachers.
