Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 20

Ramon Ortiz struck out eight and only walked one today.

Iowa Cub catcher Welington Castillo was named PCL Batter of the Week. Castillo was 10 for 16 with three doubles, three home runs and twelve RBI.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were atomized by the Albuquerque Isotopes, 4-3.

Starter Ramon Ortiz mostly tamed Isotopes Park today, but got the loss anyway. Ortiz pitched seven innings and allowed four runs, although only three were earned. He gave up only one home run among the seven hits he surrendered. Ortiz walked only one and struck out eight.

Right fielder Fernando Perez was 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored twice.

Third baseman Marquez Smith went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Center fielder Tyler Colvin was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

All-Star Break. Only ten Smokies were named to the North All-Star team, and even some of them won't make it because of injury.

Star-divide

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were shipwrecked by the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 3-1.

Angel Guzman started this game as a part of a rehab assignment, and he pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one unearned run. He gave up three hits and no walks. He struck out two.

Zac Rosscup didn't pitch poorly in relief, but took the loss anyway. Rosscup made one big mistake and it became a solo home run. He allowed just the one run on three hits over three innings. He did walk four and he struck out two.

Third baseman Rafael Valdes went 3 for 4 with a double. Left fielder Evan Crawford was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Shotstop Logan Watkins was 0 for 1 and walked three times. He stole a base and scored the lone D-Cub run.

Peoria Chiefs

All-Star Break

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks fell to the Eugene Emeralds, 9-4.

Starter Willington Cruz was pretty good in his US debut. He threw four shutout innings and allowed only four hits. He walked one and struck out seven.

Hector Mayora took the loss in relief. He gave up five runs on three hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. Only two of the five runs were earned, although really all five were unearned as an easy fly ball that would have been the third out was lost in the lights by Pin-Chieh Chen. Then an error by shortstop Wes Darvill opened up a five-run seventh inning.  Mayora walked two.

Chen was 2 for 4 with a run scored and one batted in.

Second baseman Brad Zapenas hit two doubles in a 2 for 5 game. He had one RBI.

Right fielder Reggie Golden went 2 for 4 with a triple and he scored once. First baseman Chad Noble went 2 for 4.

AZL Cubs

The rookie league team started today. If you've followed me from past seasons, I don't do a big writeup of the rookie league. If something big happens, I'll mention it. Otherwise, I just provide the box score and let you check it out yourself.

The Cubs lost to the Giants, 8-5.

I'm starting to think that...

I’m going to really like Reggie Golden. Seems like he might be what Burgess might have been. Maybe less raw power, but that was supposed to be a plus for him in the future.

by SenorGato on Jun 21, 2011 12:34 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

He's started off nicely

hitting for better average than predicted, but it’s early. Hopefully he keeps it up.

It's hard to like a guy who had such a poor work ethic

that it took him until mid-June to get in baseball shape.

His defense is absolutely horrendous

He had another error last night. This one was of the throwing variety.

He is also K’ing at a prodigous rate so far. I want to see more power/contact before I get too excited (but it won’t take too much as I am a sucker for high ceiling players).

by RynoRooter on Jun 21, 2011 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

K'ing at a prodigious rate??

He’s got 4Ks in 4 games – 14 ABs. He’s on pace for 1K/game, or over the course of 600AB, 170 Ks. Obviously it’s not a number you like to see, but I wouldn’t call that prodigious

You could also argue he’s on pace to take 85 walks!! Point being, nothing after 4 games is a “prodigious rate,” and it’s hard to take too much from it. I’m glad he’s starting off strong with a .357/.438/.500/.938 line, but I’m not going to put anything into the numbers for awhile.

by bdlugz on Jun 21, 2011 9:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but..

if you have been following the reports from AZ Phil the 1 K per game is about what he has been doing in all of the prep games being played there. The reality is he is going to K a ton. The hope is that it improves over time and the rest of his game improves enough where it is not a huge deal.

I'm well aware of the sample size

My post was mainly to counteract the posts above that seemed a bit overly optimistic about Golden.

But yes, although it is a very small sample size, Golden is striking out at a prodigious rate. 28.7% to be precise. That is prodigious in every sense of the word. That would put him close to Mark Reynolds/Adam Dunn/Ryan Howard territory.

Nice writeup about Golden in the Idaho Statesman

Sure it’s a bit of a puff piece, but its nice to see Golden talking about wanting to learn from mistakes and come up with a solid approach at the plate.

Yikes, he DID pack on the pounds

If he lost weight before that picture was taken, AZPhil wasn’t off when he said he looked like he took his bonus check to sizzler and didn’t leave.

by RynoRooter on Jun 21, 2011 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

He doesn't really look fat in that picture, but it's hard to tell with the loos pants

Looks like its mostly muscle. He’s a stocky guy, but he’s not Michael Burgess… yet.

Saw the Daytona Cubs tonight...

To those who say the Cubs organization does not encourage taking pitches and OBP, it did not appear to be true tonight. They did take some walks tonight and they seemed to wait for thier pitch they hit the ball hard but it was right at the Lakeland Tigers. Let me say that Ha can play defense in MLB right now. He made two great diving catches tonight. Both of them took him a long ways and he fully extended toward the fence and made both. Guzman was not in the media book tonight and I must admit that i didn’t recognize him, he looked so skinny! His velocity was up to 93 and he looked really good on some pitches but wan’t consistent with his location. Rosscup impressed me with his stuff but he had command problems tonight. The HR he gave up was a terrible pitch selection, a fast ball inside to a week left-handed hitter who, like all of the other LH hitters, had flailed at breaking balls on the outside corner. I’m not sure if that was called by Brenly or the bench. Jordan Latham was fantastic, throwing in the mid 90’s with a sharp breaking ball. He was dominating tonight. Nothing else stood out except Jose Valdez, who played 3rd tonight. He smashed the ball hard all 4 times up with 3 hits. This guy may be old for the league but he looks like a ballplayer. I like everything I saw about his approach at the plate. Also, Crawford can really run. He had some pretty good at-bats even if they didn’t all get good results.

Hard-throwing right hander

from Boise. He missed all of 2009 after several alcohol-related incidents. His biggest issue these days is control. He needs to throw more strikes.

by Josh Timmers on Jun 21, 2011 1:48 AM CDT up reply actions

RE: Latham

I got a chance to see him in Peoria last year and he by far was the hardest throwing of any of the pitchers Peoria used that game but with the alcohol incidents and control issues his time as a prospect is fading fast.

by cubsrul101 on Jun 21, 2011 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I guess this is up to Latham

Given a second chance hopefully he will continue to improve.

by Grockcubs on Jun 21, 2011 8:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Someone must really have something against Tyler Colvin

He had another hit taken away from him today. When I checked earlier he had finished the day 3-5 with a double, but now it’s gone. Rough.

Couple notes from AZL
Dustin Geiger was 2-5 with a 2B and 3B
2011 Draftee Pugliese made his pro debut 2 IP 0 H 0 R 0 BB 4 K

Also Willington Cruz. Where’d this guy come from? That was an also debut. What’s his story?

by Ryno G on Jun 21, 2011 1:10 AM CDT reply actions

+1

That’s the guy with the knuckle ball as well as other “normal” pitches.

Dominating numbers last season.

by Ryno G on Jun 21, 2011 1:43 AM CDT up reply actions

That was a great debut

He was facing an Emeralds team that had 1st round picks Donavan Tate and Cory Spangenberg, along with supplemental 1st round pick Jace Peterson. Very impressive.
And he’s a lefty.

by RynoRooter on Jun 21, 2011 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Re: Pugliese

AZPhil had a write-up saying that Pugliese was pretty impressive. FB was 92-93 and he was showing a decent breaking ball with it.

by RynoRooter on Jun 21, 2011 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

I-Cub stats in our paper, surprised to see

that they are last in pitching. I knew they were not good but last? They could use pitching help from AA.

LaHair really putting together a nice season..365 ave, 19 HR, 20 doubles. Ty Wright raised his average 51 points in the last ten games.

We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 for Hall of Fame.

Always been really interested to see what he would do with a 2nd shot at the majors, his debut really wasn’t bad at all and frankly I’m surprised no one has given him the time of day.

I would question that.....

Enjoy him batting third again tonight!

by TJ11 on Jun 21, 2011 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure shows how good your manager is though!

And I question DeWitt being a good ballplayer…On most teams he is a backup or in AAA….

On this team he hits 3rd….AMAZING!!!

you would think tonight vs a LHP he would not be playing, but with Quade, you never know

by TJ11 on Jun 21, 2011 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah um...FYI

he’s a backup here too. He’s getting starts because the LF went down and then the 2B went down…or now because we’re in the AL so the LF is the DH because that’s the starting LFers best position….that’s usually how teams use backups.

by SenorGato on Jun 21, 2011 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd say if the situation calls for it...

like when the usual #3 hitter is completely scuffling this year…or when the backup is hot, which DeWitt was at one point enough to be in the top 5 in both BA and OPS in the starting lineup.

Quick, lets move it to how DeWitt is part of The Bigger Problem. Yuch.

by SenorGato on Jun 21, 2011 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Lol at...

attempting to make a case for Blake DeWitt to EVER hit third in any lineup.

Lol @

The idea that this team is so loaded with hitters that “stupid” lineups wouldnt happen over the course of 162 games. Especially with Ramirez once again starting slow in the power department.

Lol @ promoting LaHair because he’s having a strong minor league season at 28.

by SenorGato on Jun 21, 2011 5:12 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah that's who you want batting 3rd...

the all or nothing power hitter who can’t hit a breaking ball…The closest thing to a real ML #3 hitter on this roster is Ramirez when he’s going, which he hasn’t been so far this year.

by SenorGato on Jun 21, 2011 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

He may not be a great fit...

but as you say, there is no perfect fit on this team. Why would DeWitt be a better option than Soriano? He’s putting up better numbers than DeWitt in literally every meaningful offensive category. You realize DeWitt has a .280 obp and .377 slugging percentage? DeWitt is one of the worst hitters on the team. Pena, Soto, or Soriano may not be great fits, but they are all clearly better choices than DeWitt. Even if one of them has to hit cleanup and Ramirez hit third, anything is better than DeWitt hitting in the middle of your order.

by Dcr18 on Jun 21, 2011 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think

he’s a “poor man’s” Hoffpauir. He pretty much is Hoffpauir.

by Josh Timmers on Jun 21, 2011 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL.

It would be a Baker-DeWiit platoon.

With Tyler Colvin stil sitting on the bench.

Read my mind

Hell if Soto got traded, instead of calling up Beef, Quade would start Hill and DeWitt would be the backup.
