Quade’s Nicknames

Considering the amount of negative comments about this topic on BCB on pretty much a daily basis I am sure I will get negative comments on this post. Here is a list I have been compiling on Quade’s nicknames for Cubs this year.  There are a couple of guys I have not heard him use nicknames on. Those include Blake DeWitt and Reed Johnson. I have not heard it firsthand but I think he has referred to Carlos Pena as ‘Los. Here is the list:

Dougy - Doug Davis
Marm - Marmol
Sori - Soriano
Wellsey - Wells
Cassy - Castro
Fuke – Fukudome
Woody – Wood
Marsh – Marshall
Bake – Baker
Colve – Colvin
Hilly – Hill
Russ – Russell
Cash – Cashner
Z - Zambrano
Demp  - Dempster
Rammy – Aramis
Sote – Soto
Zamarge - Jeff Samardzija
Monty - Lou Montanez
Barn - Darwin Barney
Garz - Matt Garza
Zeus – Ivan DeJesus
Carp - Carpenter

Guys, hitting is not about muscle. It's simple physics. Calculate the velocity, v, in relation to the trajectory, t, in which g, gravity, of course remains a constant.... It's not complicated. - George Costanza

You forgot the ones for the opponents...

like when he called Brad Mills “Millsy”

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

by Ross on Jun 23, 2011 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

that's the night Al went postal

on his recap, LMAO! Quade in the postgame after Marmol blew the game said you would have to ask Millsy about his strategy. You get the feeling that Quade has no relationship with Mills either.

I was only 9, and I remember the nicknames -

C – Jody Davis = Jo-DEE. (Quad-ie would say Jodes or Jo-Jo).
1B – Leon Durham = Bull
2B – Ryne Sandberg = Ryno
SS – Larry Bowa = None (Quad-ie would say “Bowie”)
3B – Ron Cey = Penguin
LF – Garry Matthews = Sarge
CF – Bobby Dernier = Deer (Quad-ie would say “Dernsie”)
RF – Keith Moreland = Zonk

Quad-ie would call the rotation Sutty, Sandy, Trouty, Eck, Ruthven-y and Rainey-ey.

I would say my favorite in this list is Zamarge because it rhymes with El Debarge

by drodd on Jun 23, 2011 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

Does Quade really say that? His nickname is already "shark"!

by D98 on Jun 23, 2011 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

yes, i have heard him say zamarge

When he said monty for Montanez, a young kid many Cubs fans didn’t even know, you knew beyond a reasonable doubt that Quade is a joke.

It’s truly stunning he is the Cubs manager, a guy who never ever would have been hired any other team.

by MikeJW on Jun 23, 2011 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

He is a terrible joke foisted upon a fan base of a major market team.

This is the type of guy a team like the KC Royals might interview, but would have enough sense not to hire him.

He is not a good manager...

But he is not a bad manager because he uses stupid nicknames….

by bdlugz on Jun 24, 2011 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

No he's not a bad manager because of the nicknames, but they are certainly annoying

and his folky post-game speak gets old pretty fast, especially with the nicknames….

by magicblue on Jun 24, 2011 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

You are correct...

…and I am normally not one to over analyze these things, but I do think it is a symptom of his leadership and presense, and I would not call either one strong.

I know, I know, other managers use nicknames too, but with those guys it comes accross different, because of their overall presense and what they have already accomplished.

Really, I see a lot of similarities in how Ricketts is percieved and how Quade is perceived, they present themselves in very similar fashions.

It’s the only profanity thing-ey left to rip-ey about with this crappyey teamey.

by ZeoBandit on Jun 24, 2011 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I give him some credit for actually knowing their names

so he could do stupid nicknames. Beats Lou calling nearly every young player “kid” and Scott Eyre “stevie”

Me either

by Doggie Stalker on Jun 24, 2011 12:01 PM CDT reply actions

I prefer "kid", frankly.

I am not much for the manager of anything being “one of the fellas”. It’s just a style that rubs me the wrong way, and I don’t think I’m alone.

I’m also not sure that Quade conducts himself as just one of the guys – but the nicknaming everyone makes it seem that way. And the fanbase fills in the blanks with a whole lot of chumming around and backslapping, while losing and losing and losing.

Nicknames like this.......

….. have been a part of baseball since it began. The use of them by Quade, while annoying to some, is very typical of the social culture within the sport.

i dont

see mikey long term here as mgr.who can win with this team??? they cant play defense or hit in the clutch or pitch very well. i had high hopes after the 07/08 seasons but in typical cub fashion the team went backwards. i dont know any quick fix answers this time around.

Zamarge - Jeff Samardzija

I have to chime in here. I have only heard him nickname Samardzija once, but it was “Smars”.
