New ownership of Old Style plans to exit Cubs deal.
Quite an interesting read on the new ownership of the Pabst Brewing Co.
QUOTED:
"I also want to try to exit the 'Cubs' deal and divert this money behind Old Style 'Light,'" C. Dean Metropoulos wrote. The relationship between Old Style and the Chicago Cubs baseball team has existed for 61 years.

Not a loss at all
I only get an Old Style at the park because it’s a tradition and it’s usually hot as hell. It tastes like crap. The CEO of Pabst is an idiot for letting that cash cow go.

Yep.

I think he is talking about a marketing deal
Like the “Old Style Drinker of the Game” thing. I don’t think he’s talking about not selling the beer a Wrigley.
Or, maybe he is an idiot

Maybe.
But saying the deal has lasted 61 years implies maybe they’re not going to sell it there any more.

I think this quote is implying that he no longer wants to pay for a relationship with the Cubs
Whatever the deal is… it’s a very unique structure that has seen the Old Style brand as the official beer sponsor of the Cubs for 61 years. There is certainly a price to pay for those rights… to use the Cubs trademarked logos on packaging and marketing.
It appears that he wants to take whatever money is spent on that deal, and invest it in other ways for the Old Style Light brand.
That isn’t to say that Old Style won’t be a beer selection inside the ballpark… but it would no longer be the official beer of the Cubs.

Terrible marketing decision by the new ownership.
It will be very interesting to see what % of sales are simply BECAUSE of the branding of the Cubs. I can’t imagine investing into a new product will make much of a difference due to the stigma old style has even though they already reformulated that beer as well.
It remains to be seen.
One scenario for the strategy might be: Cubs fans drink Old Style no matter what… so why spend the money on the deal to package the beer with Cubs logos? I can only assume that’s the thought behind it.
However, you won’t gain a new generation of Cubs fan Old Style drinkers moving forward, if there are no longer any ties.
A disaster for them would be Budweiser hopping onto that agreement… especially with the Bud Light bleacher agreement already in place.

However... in terms of the Cubs, this could be a bonus for Ricketts.
Budding could take place for that sponsorship between Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors.

Dream Job
It helped manage a secret band of guerrilla marketers who were paid $35,000 to $50,000 a year to buy rounds of Pabst in places like Portland, Ore.; Seattle; Berkeley, Calif.; Brooklyn; and Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, where bike messengers, hipsters and artists had adopted the brand — a phenomenon that grew out of Portland bars in the early 2000s.
Paid to drink beer.

Whats the "official" beer to drink now?
If I can’t sit on a bleacher bench with an OS, I’d sit on my couch with an OS, always made me feel a little closer to the action

Is it me...
….or if an Old Style isn’t REALLY cold, it doesn’t taste all that great?

If it's not fully krausened in old La Crosse, then it's really not Old Style. Hand me a Leinie.

Seeing as it isn't really beer anyways...

A very fine brew indeed...
The village of Aying is nice bike distant from where I live. They have a good, not too large biergarten near the brewery.

Celebrator - For those who do not know it.
Celebrator
Bottom-fermented, dark double buck bier
Alcohol content: 6.7 %
Original wort: 18.5 °
A beer that has a dominant malty taste. This beer’s origins
in a monk’s recipe are reflected in its heartiness. The Pope
of Beers, Conrad Seidl, describes it as: "Almost black with
a very slight red tone, a sensational, festive foam and truly
extraordinary fragrance that at first summons up visions of
greaves lard. The first taste is of mild fullness with an
accompanying coffee tone, which becomes more dominant
with the aftertaste. There is very little of the sweetness that is
frequently to be tasted with doppelbock beer." The Ayinger
Celebrator has been ranked among the best beers of the
world by the Chicago Testing Institute several times and has
won numerous platinum medallions.

It's been rather interesting to see what the new owners of Pabst have been doing.
This Chicagoist linkcontains a whole lotta good info on the whole thing, even more than the original post.
Interesting parallels with the whole “new ownership of a storied franchise” thing.

Wow, interesting article, thanks for the link.
I can’t believe how far they’ve taken it, and how little press it has gotten around the Chicago area.
Good riddance.

Old style is just awful
nothing but piss water, I have been sitting more and more in 242 rather than the blachers. I just get up and go right to the Captain Morgan club for all my drinks and it works out great. Pretty much any drink or beer I want—other than Miller.
When I was growing up, Hamm's beer commercials were shown during the WGN broadcasts.
Not sure if it was ever sold at the park…

Oh, wow
I remember buying Hamm’s for $8 a case in college. The first 5 or so were a little rough, but after you got those down, it wasn’t so bad.
Hamm's was the main sponsor for the Cubs and Sox on Channel 9 from 1951 until at least 1965.
Old Style and the Cubs may have been together for more than 61 years if we count the pre-Proh seasons at West Side Park. As far as radio sponsorship in the ’50’s and early ’60’s, I don’t remember Heilemann Brewery resorting to any jingles on Cubs’ broadcasts, so it fell to the live spots done by Bert Wilson, Jack Quinlan, Gene Elston, Milo Hamilton, and Lou Boudreau to make “fully krausened” a household phrase in Chicagoland back in the 1950’s.
FWIW, old scorecards give us the following basic rundown on Cubs’ home field beverage selections:
•pre-1906 (heading into the Glory Days at West Side Park):: Atlas Beer
•1906-1915: Old Style Lager at West Side Park
•1916-1918: Edelweiss Beer
• During Prohibition until 1933 (presumably near beers only): Edelweiss, Atlas Special, Prima Special (Prima apparently sponsored the Cubs on WBBM in the 1925-38 era, when games could be heard on several stations.)
• 1933-36: Prima Beer
• 1937-57: Pabst Blue Ribbon, exclusively.
• 1958-62: Hamm’s & Budweiser
• 1963-68: Old Style & Bud
• 1969-77: Old Style & Schlitz (or, as Durocher used to call it on his pre-game show, “Slits.”)
• 1978: Old Style & Miller High Life
• 1979-present: Old Style, Bud, and you tell me, because I’ve only seen a half-dozen games at Wrigley since then.

I'm pretty sure Hamm's made it into the early 1970s
… at least i remember it on Cubs telecasts past 1965.

With so many differant
brands and micro brews out there Old Style lost its way . Folks in Chicago land do seem to consume huge amount s of it . I remember entire sections at Wrigley where it was the only beer you could get .
It's a tradition
I always enjoy having some when I’m in Chicago or the rare stores it’s available in AZ. (outside of HoHoKam)
It’s a nice nostalga trip. Nothing more.

Good, Maybe a good beer will be used instead
Lots of microbrews that taste a whole heck of a lot better than Pabst.
I hope they still sell Old Style at the park,
I think its an underrated beer. I also think they should go back and make Special Export available at the games too.

As a long distance CUB fan who only gets to wrigley a few times a year, my first cold one every game is a Old Style. And I do enjoy it

Old Style is a tradition, they already got plenty of choices for the beer snobs already
