What this shows.....

…. is that his peers respect the fact that as a career minor league guy he finally got his shot to manage in the majors, and they’re rewarding him with an All Star experience while they can. Some people around BCB might not like that fact, but that is what happened here.

I don't know guys. Many here hate Q, but he's certainly got alot of respect

from other managers in the league. It’s one friggen year, and tell me how many managers are gonna put up a winning record with this roster? I heard Jim Riggleman the other day (after he walked out) give a lot of props to Quade.

by braziliancubsfan on Jun 28, 2011 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

Great

he is respected by his peers. He has a great story. however it does not equate to being a good manager.
How are the Mets doing with Wright and Davis out. Bay hitting in the .215 range, a starting rotation without Santana? They seem to be doing well. How about the Nats? Think there roster is 10 games better than the Cubs?
I am tired of this excuse of the Cubs roster sucking. There are other teams with similar talent and out performing this team.
Face it, Quade is not a major league manager.

by Grockcubs on Jun 28, 2011 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yes...The Nats are 10 games better than the Cubs...at least that many.

by Easy Ed on Jun 28, 2011 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly...

…this is a good ole boys club and when was the last time you heard a manager diss another manager? They go out of their way to compliment each other, and it will always be that way.

This is no different than when players rally around to have a manger hired (like with Quade last year). Players should NEVER be a main driver in who should be hired as manager.

Quade is putting up with alot of crap.

And he’s doing it as a sitting duck.

I have huge amounts of respect for him. He could be weak and do what the Nats guy just did.

The NL will lose though.

Uh, no.

It’s no different than Derek Jeter winning a Gold Glove—the award and acknowledgement is meant for guys that you, you know, actually deserve it. Mike Quade has done nothing at the MLB-level to suggest he’s an “all-star” manager. The guy deserves respect for being around the game for so long, etc., etc., but this isn’t a lifetime achievement award.

I'm curious- why does Quade being named an All Star coach make people so upset?

Why do ANY of you care? Exactly what affect does this have on any of your lives? So Bochy named him. So freaking what? Live and let live for once.

I'm going to the 2012 Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp!!! Who's with me?

by VegasCubFan on Jun 28, 2011 11:48 PM CDT reply actions

Dunno yet

I have some health issues to address first, then once I get past that, I want to lose some weight so I don’t tear my ligaments again. First camp I went to I found out later I broke my thumb the first day playing catch of all things, then second camp I tore up my ankle but wore a brace the entire week and needed a pinch runner all the time.

A bigger issue though is my eyesight. I was born with a condition called Strabismus. I don’t see out of both eyes at the same time. I have monocular as opposed to binocular vision. I don’t see in 3-D, I see in 2-D, and I don’t have depth perception. My vision in my left eye is 20/400, which is legally blind. When I was a kid and played ball all the time, I learned to adapt could play just fine. I found during the 2008 and 2009 camps that my ability to hit and throw a ball was all off. I can’t tell exactly how far to throw at short distances, like playing catch or from 3rd to 1st. I fed the pitching machine last camp, and when a ball was hit to me throwing it to first was always an adventure. If I’m able to get active enough pre-camp to re-learn all that and compensate for it all, then I might go.

i know

quade is not a certified genius here but lets put some of the blame on the players too.you guys know the score.the pitching is horrid. the hitters swing at everything.they cant play the field. what else??like i said before joe maddons first 2 seasons in tampa were horrible.they got him some talent and now its a whole new ballgame.quade needs a young hungry team.not all these underachieving cash cows getting their checks every 2 weeks.

Bochy-Balls?

Sorry…

"For the charming if somewhat curious branch of mankind known as Cub fans, spring is a sanguine time.. Every spring holds the blithe hope that perhaps this is the season in which Satan will grow weary and ease up on the headlock in which he has diabolically held Chicago's mightily struggling National League baseball team since 1908..." Lonnie Wheeler- "Bleachers"

by tommy veryzer on Jun 29, 2011 7:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Why does this bother me?

It bothers me because Mike Quade has not done anything to deserve being on the All Star staff.

Don’t get me wrong – I was a supporter of Quade. He was a solid third base coach and I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as manager. I was encouraged at the convention when he said, or inferred, that things would be different on his watch.

And perhaps they are different – but different in that they are worse than they were at the end of last year. The Cubs are a sloppy, careless, fundamentally poor team. Now, much of this is on the players, Quade can’t hit and field for them, but the responsibility for that stops with him.

On top of that, Quade has made several mistakes this year – he has handled the bullpen poorly, his line-up selection has been questionable – all the things that have been discussed to death on this board.

I had always thought that appointment to the All Star Game was based on achievement, either in a single season or in a lifetime, and I haven’t seen any justification for him to be on the staff, save for perhaps being Bochy’s friend. I suppose he could have been added based on the team’s performance over the last 40 games of last year, but that is a pretty low bar.

So, hooray for cronyism, hooray for rewarding a life-long “baseball guy”, hooray for selecting a guy as a replacement who didn’t have anything better planned for the All Star Weekend.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
