Who is to blame for this mess?  Vote!

By now we can all pretty much agree that no Cubs fans are happy with what we have seen out of our beloved Chicago Cubs this year. What I would like to ask you, is who do you feel is the most responsible for this disaster of this 2011 Chicago Cubs team? Most likely there is more than one reason for this teams' lack of success, and in all reality, we know this didn't just happen overnight. But if you think about it, who or what is the most to blame for the overall seeming failure of the 2011 Chicago Cubs? For injuries, vote "The Players."

It's hard to fire your players in the middle of the season.

I know it’s Hendry’s fault for putting the team together and you can fire him. It’s Quade’s fault the way they are playing and you can fire him. But even if the management house was cleaned, we have underperforming players that need to step up. We’ve covered the entire 40 man roster plus in the last few weeks, we all know who we are talking about. I’m not sure what we can do with this team because I’m not sure it can be fixed the way it is constructed. A change in manager is going to have us play .600 ball the rest of the season? Doubt it.

Instead of shaking things up, it probably needs to go in the trash and start over.

We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 for Hall of Fame.

I voted Jim Hendry!

GM's are in charge of Managers, not the other way around.

I voted for Hen-sy, too.

Next season it’ll be ALL on Ricketts.

Using the Titanic as analogy..

Ricketts and Quade parachuted on board after this ship left port. The players are indeed miserable sailors but they didn’t design and build the doomed ship. No, the full measure of blame for this catastrophy belongs to failed architech Jim Hendry. Losing 104 games would be the worst season in Cub history. That dubious goal is much more realistic than a playoff run.

Good Question

All of the above is more of an obvious choice to many, but I think we would like to know as Cubs fans, who is the most responsible so that possibly we could hope that the parties most responsible are removed or handled in some form as soon as possible.

Doesn't Al already have a similar poll on the front page?

And everybody is to blame.

Yes, I felt like this poll was necessary to further clarify who is the most responsible.

Al left out the coaching staff and Ownership which I felt should have been included.

by adam316 on Jun 6, 2011 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

It's mostly the same poll.

And everyone takes a share of the blame.

Apparently coaching staff wasn't a needed option

but Ownership is definitely an important option, and was not included in the poll on the front page. I would hope that the final results of this poll would show the order of importance of the things that need to be addressed, and leaving ownership out of the choices clearly misses the mark. You might say there isn’t much we can do about Ownership, but I believe we can by not spending our money. That might not cause ownership to change, but it might cause ownership to change their ways. True that everyone in the poll takes a share of the blame, but shouldn’t you start addressing the problem by starting with the BIGGEST cause of the problem, then take on the second biggest cause and so forth? So far the poll shows: 1. Hendry, 2. Players, 3. Ownership.

I would hope...

…the logical answer is pretty obvious at this point.

Who puts the roster together?
Who hired the manager and coaching staff?
Who is in charge of the baseball operations?

Third year of underachievement in a row for this club.

I wonder who of the poll options has been with the franchise all three years.

Pretty sure he's actually Todd Ricketts.

So you can just vote for ownership.

Ownership...

Because they gave Hendry the rubber stamp.

I couldn't vote

The media has me thinking it’s all Zambrano’s fault. Everything was fine until he said something.

Quade

I look at it this way. Who has been the most embarrasing this year? I put Quade first (lack of handling of the team & in game decisions). The players are a close second. As for Hendry, albeit his days are numbered. I would slot him 3rd.

I don't know how anyone

could make an argument for anyone other than Hendry. Sure, everyone involved deserves some criticism, but Hendry put this mess together.

Lots of teams “mortgage the future” to make a run at a championship. But I’ve never seen a franchise run into the ground this bad after a failed run. This will be the third straight terrible season, with no reason for optimism about the future.

The players haven’t played well, Quade hasn’t managed well, and Ricketts has done a poor job of endearing himself to the fans, but Hendry deserves to be the fall guy for this mess. If the players all had average (for them) seasons, and Quade managed by the book, and there weren’t significant injuries—the Cubs STILL wouldn’t win this year.

DEJESUS!!!

Sure you have. Just look at the recent editions of the Mets, for example.

I dont think Quade is the problem but he is not the solution.

I think this falls on the GM. Lou wasn’t able to do anything last year. Let Quade ride the ship for a year or two while we rebuild.

by lshaffer_69 on Jun 7, 2011 8:39 AM CDT reply actions

There are lots of reasons, but Hendry has to be held most responsible...

He’s the guy who acquired all of these players. He’s the guy who brought in the coaching staff. That makes him the most responsible. He’s not singularly responsible, but he’s most responsible.
