Chicago Cubs vs. Florida Marlins Preview, Friday 7/15, 1:20 CT: Onward To Oblivion

Mike Quade, manager of the Chicago Cubs, makes a pitching change against the Florida Marlins on July 14, 2011 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. The Marlins defeated the Cubs 6-3. (Photo by David Banks/Getty Images)

Maybe not "oblivion", but this season is rapidly heading toward record territory. At 37-56, the Cubs must go 23-46 to avoid tying (or breaking) the worst record in team history, 59-103 in 1962 (and tied in 1966).

That should be doable... but the way this team has lost games, maybe not.

There's one other thing I want to say this morning. The behavior in last night's third overflow thread was completely unacceptable. I am not going to single anyone out in this post; some people have already been notified. The personal attacks will stop. The profanity will stop. The namecalling will stop.

We are all frustrated with the play of this team. That is not an excuse for attacking each other. I'm tired of playing hall monitor. I hate to say this, but grow up.

Cubs lineup:

Fukudome RF, Castro SS, Ramirez 3B, Peña 1B, Byrd CF, Soto C, Soriano LF, Barney 2B, Dempster P

Marlins lineup was not available at posting time. If you find it, post it in the comments.

Ryan Dempster and Ricky Nolasco met earlier this year, on May 18 in Florida. Neither one pitched that well, but the Cubs wound up winning the game after both starters left. Current Marlins are hitting .243 (26-for-107) against Dempster, with the best being Hanley Ramirez (4-for-11, a HR, that was hit in that May 18 game); current Cubs are hitting .291 (23-for-79) against Nolasco. Both Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Pena have two HR off him.

Today's game is on WGN and FSN Florida. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

You know what sucks....

That lineup we far posted doesn’t seem like it’d be bad, but it is. It’s probably close to the ideal lineup given the same group of players, and its not inspiring.

Man I can’t wait til:

1) DJL and Jackson get called up.

2) Trades.

3) One of those 1B actually signs.

It basically took this manager an entire half of baseball...

to get ARam batting 3rd and Pena batting 4th.

Inexcusable.

We did get 5 games of DeWitt in the 3-hole. And 4 of him batting cleanup. And 41 miserable games of Castro at #3.

The .660 OPS we’ve gotten from the 3-spot in the lineup was too valuable to tinker with.

Ramirez batting 3rd

Once Ramirez started hitting for power it then made sense to bat him 3rd. I don’t think it would have been better to bat him 3rd before that or before Barney returned from the DL. An important part of that change is batting Barney 8th to get runners in down there.

Monty, you have to give him a break!!!!

You have to have runners on base ahead of him first!

But they are not as good!

None of them bat leadoff either!

Quade knows what he is doing!

by TJ11 on Jul 15, 2011 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

There are a couple of reasons for this.

1. Lack of chances. He’s had 311 plate appearances, 91 of those plate appearances with men on base. He’s had 60 plate appearances with runners in scoring position. Still, 12 RBI seems awfully low for a guy who’s had 60 AB with RISP and posted a 1.000 OPS. What’s going on there? The answer is….

2. Total lack of power. He has 4 XBH all year with runners on base. He has only 2 HR. And while he’s hit very well with runners on base in general, he isn’t able to drive in runners at all, even from second. To wit:

8 base hits with runners on second – resulting in only 3 RBI. Another hit with runners on first & second, no RBI.

7 hits with a runner on first, resulting in no RBI.

Basically, Kosuke needs to be batting with a runner on 3rd in order to have an RBI chance. His 12 RBI are accounted for with 7 runners on 3rd, 3 runners on 2nd, 2 HR.

May – We can turn things around anytime now. Maybe Quade doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing.

June – Who pitches to Pujols with first base open two days in a row!?? We freaking stink!

July – If we are able to go 23-46 the rest of the way we can avoid being the worst team in the club’s history.

August – This is the worst team in the history of the Cubs.

Biggest mistake of 2011 season?

I’ve been thinking about what has gone wrong this year with the team. There are so many solutions. One I won’t say is that they don’t have heart. This team does still seem to give it its all everytime they bat. That’s a big difference between 2009 and 2010 seasons.

However, the one thing that’s lacked is pitching. Did the team undervalue Larry Rothschilds influence on pitching. Look at the last two years. The team had lousy production at the plate but the pitching was solid many many times. Look at this year…almost the same guys and not so great results.

If Quade is not going to get the axe yet, someone will be made an example out of and it should be the pitching coach.

I believe I've gotten a warning or two as well

and I got away with stuff I should have been warned for, but if Al’s not going to pull out the banhammer for what went on last night, then he’s got ZERO room to complain when it happens the next time.

I guess I'm just a worrier, that's why my friends call me whiskers

When it happens next time?

Looks like that is going to be this afternoon, unfortunately.

Shoot

You know what...

… yes, I saw what Clutch did. Because it was essentially a first offense, I’m letting it go. This time.

Next time, no. You’d like to be given a second chance, wouldn’t you?

FWIW, he emailed me an apology even before I saw it.

The second chance is the last one, in this case.

Clutch16 deserves another chance IMHO, because this was out of the ordinary for him. Except for this one night, he's been more than

kind and patient to most of us who love this site and are not as knowledgeable as most of you here. We’ve already lost someone who made the threads very inviting, to me, anyway. These guys have a way of lightening things up around here and trying to accomplish that game thread after game thread can wear on a person. People have their breaking points, Clutch reached his last night is all.

That's kind of how I felt about him.

I have never received another complaint about Clutch16. Thus I am willing to give him a second chance.

I have asked him to post an apology to all involved in an upcoming game thread, and to never do it again.

We’ll see what happens.

How about this?

Comedy isn’t pretty, and it is hard. When the same one-trick-pony line is repeated over and over and over,it ain’t funny anymore. It’s just juvenile.

Only Gilligan’s Island and the Three Stooges stay funny in reruns. Some acts here – have gone way beyond their expiration date.
