Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 14

I could have been a Braves fan like my mother. Or a Brewers fan since the Braves left Milwaukee. I could have been a Tigers fan like my grandfather. I could have cheered for the Twins like my aunts and cousins. But no, I had to cheer for this godforsaken team. Worst thing is, my daughter has started singing "Go Cubs Go." The sins of the father . . .

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were yellow against the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), 8-4.

Nick Struck started and took the loss. He lasted 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits. Struck walked two and struck out two.

Right fielder Tyler Colvin hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was his seventh for the I-Cubs this year. Colvin was 1 for 4.

Brett Jackson and Ryan Flaherty both doubled in their Pacific Coast League debuts. Jackson was 1 for 5 and scored once and Flaherty was 1 for 4.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies stood tall against the Mississippi Braves, 5-4.

Brooks Raley started and picked up his sixth win with seven strong innings tonight. He allowed only one run on five hits. He struck out four and did not walk anyone.

Rafael Dolis entered the game with a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth and promptly allowed singles to the first four batters he faced. But after a bunt put the tying run on second with one out, Dolis got two ground outs to end the game. It was not a save situation.

Catcher Luis Flores hit two home runs tonight in a 2 for 3 game. The first one was a two-run homer in the sixth inning and he followed it up with a solo home run in the eighth. Flores has eight home runs so far this year. He also walked once.

Right fielder Matt Spencer was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Star-divide

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs mashed the Fort Myers Miracle (Twins), 5-2 in ten innings.

Jeffrey Lorick started and pitched 5.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Frank Batista blew the save in the bottom of the ninth inning when he allowed an unearned run on one hit, but collected the win when the D-Cubs came back and scored three in the top of the tenth. He walked one and did not strike out anyone.

Jordan Latham pitched a scoreless tenth inning for his first save of the year. He allowed one hit. He walked no one and struck out one.

The D-Cubs banged out 18 hits tonight. Left fielder Evan Crawford was 4 for 5. He scored once and his RBI single in the tenth inning gave the Cubs the lead.

Second baseman Matt Cerda was 3 for 5 with a double and a walk. He had two RBI. First baseman Justin Bour went 3 for 6 with a double and an RBI.

Right fielder Michael Burgess went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He scored once. DH Michael Brenly was 2 for 5 with a double. Third baseman Dustin Harrington was 2 for 5 and had one RBI.

Shortstop Logan Watkins was 2 for 5 with a walk and scored twice. Watkins has now had two hits or more in the past five games.

Matt Szczur was 0 for 6.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs were court-martialed by the Lake County Captains (Indians), 10-2.

Austin Kirk got knocked around tonight for six runs on ten hits over only four innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Center fielder Rubi Silva was 3 for 5 with a triple. Silva scored both Chief runs.

Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara was 3 for 4.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks lost to the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays) 5-1.

Yao-Lin Wang was a three true outcomes pitcher tonight. He took the loss after allowing three runs on three solo home runs. He gave up only four total hits over 4.2 innings. He walked only one and struck out nine.

First baseman Paul Hoilman was 3 for 4 and scored the only Hawks run. Third baseman Willson Contreras was 2 for 4 and knocked Hoilman home for the only RBI.

AZL Cubs

Lost to the Padres 10-9.

9 K's for Wang is cool.

Brooks Raley with another good start.

Burgess continues his hot July.

Cerda with a good game.

I’m tired so I’ll make more comments tmrrr probably. I’m going to plug my Midseason prospect top 10 thread, where some interesting discussion happened.

Watkins

He’s hitting over .400 for the past month and a half pretty remarkable after his anemic start. Should we start getting somewhat excited over Raley, I know he’s only focused solely on pitching for 2 plus yrs but seems to be making strides. Also, where is Junior Lake?

by joeby231 on Jul 15, 2011 1:47 AM CDT reply actions

I keep waiting for Raley to break out

The Cubs were very high on him as an upside guy when they took him, no?

Yes

Got a substantial overslot bonus to leave A&M. The thought was that with his athleticism and by focusing on only pitching (2-way player in college) he could gain more ticks on the fastball, tighten up the breaking ball and develop a nice changeup. None of that has really happened.

Wow

9 Ks for Wang. Sweet. I have nothing else good to say after that. Bad night for everyone else (major prospect wise). Especially Szczur. Golden keeps slumping. Chen as well. Kirk either dominates or gets beat up. Oh. One other semi bright note. DeVoss started at 2B and went 2-5 with an RBI, K, and a SB. And Geiger and Easterling DNP. I was hoping this was a sign of a promotion. Heard anything, Josh?

Love the K's for Wang

It sounds ridiculous to say “Other than the 3 HR allowed, he pitched great.” But that’s exactly how I feel. Obviously he needs to sharpen things up, but this was an encouraging start.

by RynoRooter on Jul 15, 2011 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you

It was an odd start, but at that level, I’m more concerned about missing bats and throwing strikes than anything else.

by Josh Timmers on Jul 15, 2011 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Peoria

Geiger and Easterling were both promoted

by joeby231 on Jul 15, 2011 3:57 AM CDT reply actions

I figured this was the case

when neither were in the lineup for Arizona last night. Peoria though? That’s pretty aggressive.

by RynoRooter on Jul 15, 2011 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

At least Peoria is interesting again.

I like it. If Easterling and Geiger perform well, they could easily get some eyes pointed their way.

What kind of bonus will

Appel from Stanford demand from us in a year?

He needs to get some results before I get on board with him being the pick

I’d like to see more than 7.2 K/9 out of a college starter with mid-90’s gas. Yes, the Pac-10 is solid, but that’s pretty poor.

He hasn’t been lights out for Team USA this summer either. K rate is up, but so is everything else.

Kevin Gausman, however, has been great.

by RynoRooter on Jul 15, 2011 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I still think Dierkroeger will go higher.

He needs to perform too, but he’s got the tools to be a stud prospect.

Crawford should've been promoted...

Between he and Ha

I don’t know that there was a wrong choice.

Yeah, but Crawford's two years older (23 in a couple weeks)

And he played college ball at Indiana. He’s hitting .330 with 21 stolen bases.

Ha was only batting .276

I think this shows

that the organization doesn’t view him as a legit prospect at the moment. And given our depth at CF, he likely doesn’t have much of a future with the Cubs. It would be nice to maximize his trade potential, though.

by RynoRooter on Jul 15, 2011 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

How are they ever going to find out, if they keep him at the A level?

They obviously saw something in him, when they traded for him last summer. And he’s definitely excelling in A-ball. Move him up and see if it continues.

I shouldn't have been quite so dramatic

It’s not that the organization might not view Crawford as a legit prospect, but more than they view Ha as more of one and would rather be aggressive with him.

by RynoRooter on Jul 15, 2011 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Ha has

Waaaaaay more of a future. Not to mention he’s probably a better player already.

Whoever wants to can rip on

Boise announcer Mike Safford all you want. I finally got to listen to a game where the bats showed up. He did very well. Tough to sound exciting when you only muster six singles.

by timh815 on Jul 15, 2011 6:40 PM CDT reply actions

I will.

And I listened to him early in the year, before the bats completely died down. He was terrible then as well. I haven’t listened to an Iowa game yet, but he’s easily the worst announcer of all the other affiliates.

by RynoRooter on Jul 15, 2011 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

That wouldn't be surprising

since the short season team only broadcasts half a season.

It’s time to start listening to Iowa with Castillo, Flaherty and Jackson there. Unfortunately, the Iowa guys are no Baliva or Gillespie. They even had a painful interview with Newt Gingrich today. (OK, is there any other type of interview with Newt Gingrich?)
