If this helps move Marlon Byrd or Aramis Ramirez, then fine

otherwise it doesn’t seem to make much sense to me.

Angel Guzman is the man.

Though I guess when you think about it, who’d give up much for Baker? Maybe they think he can be a type B and bring a supp pick.

baker is at 43 right now, 14 points below the lowest type B

that said, the cubs wouldnt get jack for baker

Is there anybody that they do intend to trade?

Bat boys? Mark Riggins? Len Kasper?

No reason for Hendry to trade anyone

since the roster we have now is clearly working for us.

I hope this is either a bluff to get more.

Rather than the Cubs looking at Jeff Baker as if he’s untouchable.

Intend

Meaning no one is offering anything they like for him.

by Ryno G on Jul 16, 2011 2:53 PM CDT reply actions

Really, what's the point.

Jeff Baker is a marginally useful bench player; he’s got -0.3 total WAR this year. Most teams could find just about anyone for free who could do what Baker can do, so what sort of return would you get? Really, getting worked up about this is a little over the top.

I think alot of people are over reacting because..

the team is losing at a epic rate and the Cubs in the past have over valued their players.

Of course if the Red Sox and others have only offered a crappy player in return, they should decline the trade. But IMO, you kind of stated the reason why the Cubs should trade high on him (his value really isn’t going to be any higher) with this statement:

Fangraphs has him as a positive .3 WAR.

The only way he could possibly be considered negative is due to UZR, and his UZR at 2B is 1.3 on the season, looking at a 33.7 UZR/150.

His 3B and outfield UZR has sucked. But if you’re looking for a 2B who can hit lefties, he’s valuable.

Trading Baker

The Red Sox and Indians showed interest in him, but what did they offer the Cubs? Or did the discussion ever get far enough to talk about who the Cubs would get?

I can see a team having a need for a player like Baker and his arb eligibility could make him a more appealing acquisition. I can’t see anybody wanting to trade a franchise player or the farm for Jeff Baker though.

Baker is a low-impact player for the Cubs, so they should be willing to trade him for a fair return. If they are keeping him because of some grand scheme to platoon 3B or platoon any other field position, then the Cubs are probably hard-up.

Right, and that’s why they should probably keep him.

Probably because Ryan Flaherty could do everything Baker does.

Only difference is — he can hit righties.

See, you don't know that.

Flaherty — looks good, sure, in the minor leagues. No one knows, yet, what he can do at the major league level.

There's a pretty obvious way to find that out doncha know?

Which is why there are reasons to trade Baker beyond getting a bluechipper in return

I mean it's not like Flaherty would be replacing Chase Utley.

We are talking about Jeff Baker. The guy .. who has a -0.3 WAR and can’t hit righties for league average.

I actually think the Cubs should see if Flaherty can play 2nd full time.

I'm fine with keeping Baker if he's used properly

If Baker gets 250 PA/year against LHP between a platoon and #1 RHPH, and 80-90 against RHP as a PH, he’s fine as long as he’s not arb-eligible. And his WAR would be in the 0.6 range. Let Flaherty or DJL come up and take DeWitt’s role.

Unfortunately, I think Baker’s getting too much playing time against RHP.

It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

But why not have the other half of Flaherty or DJL replace Baker?

It’s not like Baker is the 2008 version of DeRosa in the utility role.

by ClarkFan on Jul 16, 2011 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Depending on your 4th OF, you can have all three of them on the bench

But I was thinking that they’re not going to resign Ramirez, so the other one of Flaherty/DJ could be the starter at 3B.

I also think that Flaherty could be a piece that they trade as part of unloading a bad contract such as Z’s. Not that I agree with that idea, but I think it’s possible.

I agree that Baker probably has more value to us than he does in a trade

the frustrating part for me is that this is the 2nd player that Hendry has essentially called off limits and as I’ve mentioned previously, the only player on this team that should be untradeable is Castro. When a roster isn’t working, it time to get creative – it’s not time to hunker down with your guys.
