A simpler version
No: Castro
If you can get a good return (relative to player value): Soto, Marshall, Marmol, Garza, Barney, Ramirez
If you can get an interesting piece(s) back: Wells, Russell, Wood (no incentive to move him)
Yes: Everyone else

I certainly wouldn't go that far.
The ‘everyone else’ included some still useful players (e.g., Pena, Dempster, Byrd, Baker) that the Cubs should be able to get some value for.

It seems like
Hendry doesn’t want to have the traditional, white flag, rebuilding firesale—but he has to be open to making some deals and potentially dropping salary, while also helping the team in the near future.
In order to be competitive, we need two corner infielders, and above average starter, and more talent in the outfield. I don’t see any way of competing without getting either Fielder or Pujols in the off-season. There isn’t that kind of impact first or third baseman available on the trade market, and we need a huge infusion of talent this off-season. So let’s ignore first base in our midseason plan.
I think there is a potential trade target we should look at in the outfield that would fit this team well—Matt Kemp. The Dodgers financial constraints will not allow them to lock him up, and he’s going to get expensive this off-season. The price would certainly start with Brett Jackson plus other talent, but I think that’s ok—that is the kind of deal a team wanting a quick turnaround with a big budget should be making. Matt Kemp is what we dream Brett Jackson could become, and he’s only (I think) 26. He’s the 3-hitter we’re missing.
As for third base, we have some flexibility given the youth and range of our infielders. Castro could make a shift to 3rd or 2nd, and Barney can play second or short. So we could conceivably add a player at any of those positions and be covered. The market is pretty bare there http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/2012-mlb-free-agents.html and highlighted be Jose Reyes, who seems like a long-shot. Aramis Ramirez on a one year deal might not be a terrible idea, considering the alternatives.
The rest of the focus, imo, should be on dropping bad contracts and acquiring a starter who is or could be a 3rd starter or better. Marlon Byrd could be an attractive trade candidate to a team like Pittsburgh that needs some outfield help that is cost-controlled. Kerry Wood would net a significant prospect from Arizona, would potentially come back after the season, and would conceivably approve a deal to his off-season home in Phoenix. Ramirez is more of a long-shot given his apathy for playing for a contender and his 2012 option, but is worth attempting to move. Carlos Pena has significant value to a team needing left-handed pop, and his deferred money gives the receiving team some flexibility. Fukudome seems like a good add for a team that needs a patient hitter with good defense and without plus power.
I for one am not disappointed that they aren’t itching to trade Jeff Baker. He is cheap and versatile, and for a team with expensive holes to fill over the net 9 months, his value might be higher to us than on the trade market. Soto would have value, but his value has likely diminished, and the Cubs alternatives next year poor enough that I’d hang on to him. It’s not realistic to trade Soriano, and if he’s hitting in a Castro-Barney-Kemp-Fielder et lineup, I’m less concerned about his well documented deficiencies.
DEJESUS!!!

Exactly. His trade value is almost nil, but he could be a useful bench part in 2012, and he’s not expensive.

Maybe he can be traded as part of a larger deal in the offseason. Dealing him now for a low-level non-prospect is pointless.

I don't think we want to see Castro at third
Second is a great option. I wonder if some of his throwing errors can be attributed to arm strength. Moving him to third will not help that.

Jeff Baker, Reed Johnson, and Blake Dewitt are all three nice role players off the bench
and would be nice to have coming off the bench next year. go ahead and DFA.
The trades that I could see happening are:
Kerry Wood to Arizona. They have expressed interest, and he has said he wouldn’t accept a trade He does own a home there, and he seams t be the type that would like another chance to pitch in the post season.
Carlos Pena to Pittsburgh, Cleveland or San Francisco. He would be a big upgrade for all three, and there isn’t a big need for 1B elsewhere.
Aramis Ramirez to Anaheim or the three teams above. I don’t really think he is going to waive his NTC, and if he does he would probably require his option for next year be picked up and I think that would just leave the Angels.
Fukudome to San Francisco or Boston. He would really help the Giants and he would even be an upgrade over J.D. Drew for the Sox. In order to get anything of value in return the Cubs will probably have to pay some of his remaining salary.
Marlon Byrd same as above.
Ryan Dempster to Boston, New York, Cleveland or Arizona. I don’t really see him getting traded but all three make a lot of sense to me. If the Cubs want something of value they will probably have to kick in some money here too. Boston has a ton of injuries, and Daiskuke comes off their books this year Dempster would fit in real nice in his spot. The Yankee’s need him worse than Boston if they are going to win the division.
There are others that I would like to see traded, but they aren’t ever going to happen
Demp's value is too low to trade right now.
Maybe the offseason is a better idea. His numbers suggest he’s been unlucky so far this year.

The only one of those deals I can see being made is Fukudome.
The Pirates have a 1B, so they’re not likely to be dealing for one.
Kerry Wood isn’t going anywhere. Incidentally, Wood sold his Arizona home quite some time ago.
Ramirez isn’t likely going anywhere, either.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
What?
You think Lyle Overbay is a contending team’s first basemen? Not a chance. Pirates have been all over Pena, and that’s probably his best spot as well as Pirates will want us to eat most of the salary and they can give us a nice pitching prospect.
Pirates have been all over Pena

Just google Carlos Pena or cubs rumors
http://cubbiescrib.com/2011/07/15/this-rumor-and-that-rumor/
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/07/trade-candidate-carlos-pena.html
You have to read those more carefully.
The first one links to a Pittsburgh beat writer’s link in which he says:
The best matches for a take-on-salary trade — Carlos Pena and Derrek Lee — might not be great fits.
The MLBTR link says:
The Pirates and Diamondbacks strike me as two teams that would benefit from renting the Pena.
So basically, the writers are speculating in both cases. That’s hardly “Pirates have been all over Pena”.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
I didn't exactly mean "all over"
But they’re clearly interested in him depending on the price, and I think it’s a joke to say they have a first basemen and won’t upgrade. They’re clearly looking for offense.
"Clearly interested"?
Again, you have shown no proof of this, other than two writers speculating that the Pirates might be interested, and one of them — a Pirates beat writer — saying he probably wouldn’t be a good fit.
Find me a link that says that the Pirates are interested in Pena. So far, you haven’t, and there’s a link below that specifically says they are not interested.

I had heard they sold that home quite some time ago.

Further
The Ricketts family noted that Wood was selling his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., and moving his family back to Chicago, his baseball home for 10 seasons.
Now, I am well aware that Scottsdale isn’t Paradise Valley. But Wood did not own TWO homes in the Valley, did he?
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
Well there's this:
http://arizonasports.com/?sid=1422001&nid=42
But, more importantly, I have friends who live in the same area and they see Kerry’s wife Sarah from time to time. (She likes to shop at Target, apparently).
They did own a house in Fountain Hills at one time, but I believe they sold that house to buy the mansion in Paradise Valley. If they had sold it recently they would likely have taken a pretty big loss on it. There is no real reason to do so, even if they are spending most of their time in Chicago now. They may use it more as a vacation home, I don’t know.
That link says nothing about him living in Scottsdale, or Paradise Valley.
Only the speculation of a local radio guy who thinks the Dbacks should get him.

It’s a big name. The guy lives here in the Valley. He had a lot of success as a starting pitcher early in his career. Injuries derailed him for awhile but he’s come back strong as a relief pitcher. The guy I’m talking about is Kerry Wood.”

The first only says they’re setting up a home during spring training.
The second is more speculation.
It seems clear to me, and from what I know from personal contacts who should know, that the Woods have no intention of wanting to live in the Valley. They are committed to Chicago and do not want to leave.
Believe what you want, but that’s the truth.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
Huh?
Let’s see….
I gave you a link showing his home had not sold, and is in fact, on the market.
And two links from local media stating clearly that Wood still owns a home in Arizona.
You asked for proof, and I provided it.
I never said anything about Wood’s intentions or his commitment as far as a place to live. You clearly know more about his intentions than I do.
All I said is that he still owns a house in Arizona, which is undeniably true.
Wood
has said he would consider a trade only if the situation were perfect. I don’t know him personally, but I would think that a trade to the Diamondbacks, who are in contention and play in a city where he either has property or recently had property would be that situation.
DEJESUS!!!
Al, if Wood is the person who bought it in 2003, he still owns it
http://www.trulia.com/property/3010481562-6838-E-Cheney-Dr-Paradise-Valley-AZ-85253
And as Phoenix is one of the real estate blast zones, Wood would probably have to take a hit of $500K or more to sell it. Yeah, he’s a rich MLB player, but 500 grand is still real money.

So you're saying
Trade 25 guys for a bag of balls? Add Jim Hendry to the mix and maybe a team will throw in a batting cage?
Didn't say trade for a bag of balls
but blow up this team — absolutely. There’s very little talent currently on this team that I’d consider critical to making a deep playoff run. That’s why I’d trade most of them.
Typo-ed on R. Lopez — absolutely trade him if there are any takers.
Cheap guys? We’ve got plenty of them with Castro, Barney, and few more cheap bats coming in the future (like next year), a couple of the pitchers. Don’t see any reason to keep J. Baker, B. DeWitt, etc. since they’re not going to play a role in any deep playoff run. Therefore trade Baker and Pena to the Giants who are screaming for bats, and have some talent in the minors — or perhaps J. Sanchez.

because the only substantive disagreement thus far is some who suggest we keep Baker and DeWitt? And of course the obvious mix up I made on Lopez. Doesn’t seem like many are disagreeing with the statements.
Frankly the list indicates that Hendry’s current refusal to rebuild is insane, and Rickett’s accpetance of the current situation disappointingly points to more of the same.

It's a pretty good list
I’d take Soto off because his value is low and you’re unlikely to find anyone better for next year.
I’ve done a 360 on ARAM. Again, I think you’re unlikely to find anybody better for next year, so I think you’re forced to pick up the option.
I’d put Dempster and Wood on the yes list. Demp would have great value, possibly even being the #1 pitching target for a lot of teams, especially given his strong finishes. Every year some pitcher gets energized by a trade to a contender and reels off 8 of 9. Demp could be that guy this year. He should bring a decent ML-ready prospect; otherwise keep him.
I would think Wood may accept a deal to the Phillies in an effort to get a ring. Just negotiate next year’s deal first so he knows he can comeback if he wants to.

Keep in mind you need 25 players next year
and there are nowhere near enough guys in the system MLB ready to be able to trade that many players. What would be the point of trading Soto when he would be VERY hard to replace, heck even Baker would be hard to replace. Trade one decent bench guy for next to
nothing and then go scrounging for one on the FA market in the off season?

why
trade baker?to get a body to stick in the minors.if you could get something then sure. the players the cubs want to trade are untradeable. soriano,z,fukudome and ramirez.everyone else brings back nothing in return.
I wonder if doing a "value pack" might at least bring back something of value
For example, if the Giants took Pena and Kosuke with the Cubs kicking in cash, maybe that would bring back a legit prospect. I hate the idea of trading players of any value for nothing. A 24 year old in his third season of High-A ball with a .720 OPS doesn’t do a lot for anyone.
"Enough foreplay- let's get crackin'"- Fred Garvin
Some thoughts...
Soto — We should be in talks with the Giants about him. Replace him with Wellington Castillo and see how he does for the remainder of the year (that means don’t play Koyie Hill over him every day).
K. Hill — See if someone wants him, and if you can’t trade him, just hold onto him for the year as a BACK-UP, not starter.
J. Baker — They won’t get much for him, and he makes close to nothing. He’s under our control as well, so keep him for utility duties next year.
D. Barney — Don’t trade him, but take him out of the 8th spot in the order for heaven’s sake. He’s one of our best hitters with runners in scoring position, and he hits in a place where he gets nothing to hit.
S. Castro — Put him in the lead-off spot where he belongs. I’ll never forget the first time he lead off against the Brewers and hit a double, triple, and stole a base. The next day he was back in the 2-hole with manager-favorite Fukudome back in the lead-off spot, where he doesn’t belong. Move Castro to where he belongs before he gets wrecked like Colvin.
B. DeWitt — Trade him for whatever is offered.
C. Pena — Trade him. Offer to pay the $5 million for next year if necessary to get a deal done. There should be NO reason why we can’t trade him. Bring up LaHair and let’s see what he’s got for the rest of the season at 1B.
A. Ramirez — A trade is unlikely, as his $16 million option vests if he’s traded and I doubt anyone wants to pay him $16 million next year. The only way to trade him would be to restructure is contract, similar to what the Brewers did with K-Rod. They got out of their $17.5 million dollar option, so the Cubs should be able to work something out. Then bring up Ryan Flaherty and let him play for the rest of the year at 3B.
M. Byrd – Trade him as well, and then bring up Brett Jackson and let him play CF for the rest of the year.
T. Campana — Why would you trade him? He has game-changing speed and is a very useful bench/pinch runner in late one run games, which the Cubs have trouble winning for some reason.
K. Fukudome - Agree with you here….he should be traded even if the Cubs have to eat most of the rest of his contract. Then bring up Colvin and let him play-EVERY DAY (and not bat 8th).
R. Johnson — You might be able to get something useful. If they don’t trade him, I wouldn’t mind seeing him play every day instead of Soriano.
A. Soriano - I like Al’s idea-see if the Giants would take him for Zito. They are trying to get rid of a starter, and Zito has had a decent year. Besides that, the Cubs need to change things now and I would trade him to anyone, even if it meant eating a lot of money.
R. Dempster — Ryan (along with Barney, Campana, and Wood) are (in my opinion) the best character guys in the clubhouse, but if you could get something decent in return I’d definitely think about it. If not, we could keep him to anchor the rotation.
M. Garza — He won’t be traded, as then Hendry would have to admit that the trade was a mistake in the first place. He’s been hot-cold all year, so if he was traded I wouldn’t be against it though.
J. Grabow — Should have been DFA last year.
R. Lopez — Should have been DFA over a month ago.
C. Marmol — I think he can snap out of it. If we trade him to someone with a good coaching staff, we might end up regretting it.
R. Ortiz — Don’t even understand why he’s on the team.
J. Russell — I’d trade him, so that he’s not competing for a starting job next spring training for some unknown reason.
J. Samardzija — If we could trade him, I would, but I doubt that will happen. He also has a NTC.
Randy Wells - - I would trade him as well, but I doubt this will happen as well. Again, if he was traded to a team with a good coaching staff he might end up being pretty good.
K. Wood — I don’t think he wants to leave, and he took a lower deal to stay here, so I wouldn’t trade him. Plus we need him in our bullpen and he’s a team leader. He should have never left in the first place, but I guess getting Bradley was more important.
C. Zambrano — If we could I would, but we’d probably have to eat a lot of money. If I had to choose between eating Soriano’s or Zambrano’s contract I would definitely choose Soriano’s. Also, I think another team’s coaching staff might help out Zambrano a lot as he has a lot of talent.
How many of you would like to see this line-up for the rest of the year? I know I’d rather watch it:
Castro SS
Jackson CF
Colvin RF
LaHair 1B
Reed Johnson LF
Barney 2B
Flaherty 3B
Castillo C
Pitcher
I also wouldn’t against watching Campana play every day in the OF. Besides trades, I would make some coaching changes as well.
Why in the world would you trade Pena and PAY for it?
If you don’t get something of VALUE for trading him, keep him. LaHair is not going to be Cubs !B next year.

There was a
Bruce Levine article linked to in the pregame article. The most interesting thing to me is he says Aramis’s option doesn’t kick in if he’s traded, he just gets a 1 mil relocation bonus if traded and otherwise his contract is the same with a 2 mil buyout next offseason.
If true, that makes a Ramirez trade MUCH more likely, as all they have to do is convince him to leave. He becomes one of the most attractive trade pieces on the market, up there with Carlos Beltran who is expected to net a top pick.
