Poor Austin Reed

She just can’t catch a break!

That's a new one on me.

I’m just a little bit distracted tonight.

She’s going to be the first woman in the majors, I tell you.

Give this kid a chance to impress at the next level.

Jackson with another great game

LeMahieu and Flaherty as well. Ha another double, but nothing else offensively. Szczur another multi hit game. Easterling with the nice multi hit, homer debut, maybe has more power than we expected and the walk as well, but he did K 3 times. Reed hasn’t pitched well at all so far in his early career. Hopefully he can turn things around.

Sounds like

Greg Rohan to Daytona
Dustin Geiger to Peoria

Box score has

Jokisch with 5.0 IP tonight, just a heads up.

That being said, not a terrible night and he’s had several strong starts already as a starter.

Rough night for me

Had some stuff going on around the house as I was trying to do this. Least I didn’t give him a sex change.

Happens to the best of us

And I’m sure he appreciates remaining a dude for now.

Don't worry about it Josh

love these write-ups and am almost always waiting up for you to post them (even if I’ve been tracking the scores all night myself). Just giving you a hard time, but you certainly don’t deserve it!

Geiger

My friend in Scottsdale told me he was promoted a couple days ago, don’t know what happened with that.

by joeby231 on Jul 17, 2011 1:55 AM CDT reply actions

I posted this earlier

But it sounds like Rohan was promoted to Daytona with Geiger taking his place.

The Iowa lineup

is now full of the high level prospects previously in Tenn. Most of their games are on Milb.tv if you want to see them in action. Lehair is a beast this year. I’d love to see him in Wrigley at least in Sept. I know his age but i’d think he could be a 1-2 year fill in at 1st if Pena is gone. Flaherty seems to be ARam’s replacement..

If it wasn't for the injuries, we'd be printing WS tickets right now.

by tharr on Jul 17, 2011 2:48 AM CDT reply actions

Smh @ this LaHair stuff.

2011 would be the tip of the losing iceberg if he got years at 1B.

by SenorGato on Jul 17, 2011 2:16 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Lehair

If he is our first baseman next year, I will never watch another game.

by joeby231 on Jul 17, 2011 3:19 AM CDT reply actions

I personally guarantee you

that LeHair won’t be our starting 1B next year.

by Ryno G on Jul 17, 2011 3:27 AM CDT up reply actions

ya know

I get that lahair is ‘too old’ to be a ‘prospect’ but its not impossible that he could be a useful bat in his pre-arb years.

by circuitclout on Jul 17, 2011 11:21 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Not impossible...

Just extraordinarily unlikely.

by SenorGato on Jul 17, 2011 2:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

semantics aside

the knock on lahair was always that he didn’t hit for enough power relative to his size and position. well, he’s done all he can do in the minors to answer that question and i’d like to see him get another shot to see if he’s really improved or if he’s just mastered AAA.

by circuitclout on Jul 17, 2011 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

He's just mastered AAA.

It’s his 6th go around there so….Yeah.

by SenorGato on Jul 17, 2011 3:35 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Not my problem that some here can't see the obvious

when it comes to LaHair.

If he was the monster sleeper some on BCB, which now includes you, thinks he is then I’m sure someone in baseball would have noticed in the decade he’s been in the minors.

by SenorGato on Jul 17, 2011 4:14 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

magic

how you turned “not impossible that he could be a useful bat in his pre-arb years” into “monster sleeper” just like that.

by circuitclout on Jul 17, 2011 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

It's his 6th season in AAA.

In that time he’s gotten one callup. He’s a good candidate to get fifteen minutes sure, but that 15 minutes isn’t going to be two-three seasons. It’ll be whatever ABs he gets if Pena gets traded.

i don't doubt it

or he could be luke scott, who knows.

It's amazing how deep our system could be by seasons end

Assuming no one goes over service time
Brett Jackson, Szczur, Baez, LeMahieu, McNutt, Vitters, Vogelbach, Ha, Flaherty, Golden, Maples, Wells, Cruz, Liria, Easterling, Dunston Jr, Geiger, Kirk, Beeler, Chen, Struck, Castillo, Lake, Beliveau, Rhoderick, Dolis, Wang, Clevenger, Jay Jackson, Watkins, Kim, Reed, Crawford, Bour, Del Valle, Peralta, DeVoss, Scott, Urban, Jacquez, Penalver, Candelario. Besides Crawford and Bour, those guys are legit interesting. Deeeeeeeep system.

by Ryno G on Jul 17, 2011 4:43 AM CDT reply actions

Very deep system.

But we need two or three of these guys to be superstars.

Some of these

I would love to see Brian, Ryan, DJ, and BJAx playing for the Cubs down the stretch....

There is nothing to lose and why not see what you have for possible trades.

I know them along with Barney and Castro would be quite a bit of youth and probably would get beat….But the older players sure are not getting the job done either.
So they couldnt do much worse.

I think they would bring some energy to a dead team.

by TJ11 on Jul 17, 2011 9:19 AM CDT reply actions

Ryan, DJ, and BJax = yes.

Brian — if you’re talking about Bryan LaHair, no. Pointless. He’s a Quad-A player.

September is ok, April is not

If he’s a good clubhouse guy for the younger minor leaguers, I’m fine with rewarding LaHair with some major league service time in September as an acknowledgment of a very good AAA season. Give him 7 of Carlos Pena’s AB per week, so what…

And then you outright him back to Iowa the day after the season ends.

I'd rather we spend the money on

an overslot. By money, I mean the pay hike for AAA to MLB.

by timh815 on Jul 17, 2011 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

How much are we talking here?

Assuming that he gets paid extra days because the AAA season was over, we’re talking about $60k. The team probably spends more than that on meal money each road series.

What exactly is $60k going to do to help an overslot? Help sign a 14th round pick?

Cubs 2011 14th Round Pick was Dillon Maples

I’d prefer Maples in AZ XST in 2012 than LeHair in Wrigley in 2011.

LaHair?

No. He’s a good organizational guy. He doesn’t really rate major league time.

I was going to mention that

That versatility is tremendous. If both he and DeVoss could be at least servicable at both 2B/CF, they become that much more valuable.

by RynoRooter on Jul 17, 2011 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

About time!

I was calling for this at the beginning of the year. He started off hot but never got it together above Peoria. At his age and the level he’s stuck at, I’ve lost most of the excitement I had for him at the beginning of the season. That said, if he could play a solid 2B, that puts him back in the interesting category.
