Chicago Cubs vs. Florida Marlins Preview, Sunday 7/17, 1:20 CT: The Volstad Act
The all-time series between the Cubs and Marlins is tied.
Each team has won 76 games -- and it's also tied in both ballparks; 36-36 in Miami (which will forever be the mark at the football stadium, as the Marlins move into a new park next year) and 40-40 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs lead this year's season series, 3-2, thanks mostly to the two-game sweep the Cubs gave to the Marlins in Miami in May. Besides the Marlins, the Cubs have a winning record this year against only three other teams: the Diamondbacks, from whom they won the season series 4-3, the Padres, who they lead 2-1 and won't face again until the last four games of the season in San Diego, and the Brewers, who they lead 4-3 and will play nine more times.
It would be nice to win a series. The Cubs haven't won one in a month, since they took three of four from those Brewers at Wrigley Field from June 13-16. The Cubs are 10-17 since then.
Cubs lineup:Johnson RF, Castro SS, Ramirez 3B, Peña 1B, Byrd CF, DeWitt LF, Soto C, Barney 2B, Wells PMarlins lineup:
Bonifacio 2b, Dobbs 3b, Morrison lf, Ramirez ss, Sanchez 1b, Stanton rf, Cameron cf, Buck c, Volstad p

Randy Wells has one career start against the Marlins, on May 11, 2010 at Wrigley Field. He pitched well and the Cubs lost. This year hasn't been any different, except Wells has pitched poorly and the Cubs have lost. Gaby Sanchez homered off Wells in that game last year.
The Cubs hit Chris Volstad pretty hard on May 19 in Miami, including a home run from Marlon Byrd. Byrd, Carlos Pena and Aramis Ramirez are the three current Cubs who have homered off him; Ramirez is 5-for-10 lifetime.
Today's game is on CSN Chicago and FSN Florida. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Today's first pitch thread will be up at 1:20 p.m. CDT and the overflow threads will post at 2:15 pm, 3:15 pm and 4 pm CDT. If you need more overflows due to extra innings or rain delays, post them in the fanshot section.

DeWitt? In LF again? Ridiculous.

Seriously, does it really matter if Lou Montanez was there instead?

I agree, at this point,
Quade can continue to pull names out of three hats:
One: Player name
Two: Position
Three: Position in lineup
that would be novel. oh wait, he already does a couple of these.
I'm going to the 2012 Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp!!! Who's with me?

why not campana??
quade mentioned him last nite..I’d like to see this guy play occasionally. he’d be good fit it if they had power guys in corners.
I'd like to see an outfield of
BJax in LF, Campana in CF, and Colvin in RF. Then I might actually watch the games more. I think that everyone knows that if Fukudome is traded, that “The Franchise” will take over in RF.

Exciting in terms of he can steal a base.
It may be his only skill, but it’s more exciting than anything DeWitt does.
Gammons tweets Jim Hendry has no interest in trading Dempster or Garza
pgammo Peter Gammons
Jim Hendry has no interest in trading Dempster or Garza during season.
So-he won’t trade Baker,Dempster or Garza. Aramis says he won’t accept a trade. I guess
Hendry meant it when he said there would be no fire sale.
He won't trade Marshall either
So hopefully either he realizes that the offers that these guys would fetch are borderline insulting to fans, or he realizes that he’s going to be fire and is willing to just let the new guy get the types of propsects that guy prefers.

That pretty much leaves Byrd, Kosuke, Grabow and Pena.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
You don't know that, TJ.
I mean, I know you have no faith in anything or anyone in the Cubs organization right now. But somebody on the list above will be dealt this month.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
And that faith should come from what?
They make stupid moves every single day.
DeWitt in LF is one already today.
Oh, I'm not saying you SHOULD have faith.
But a trade of one of those guys is highly possible, regardless of what you think of Hendry et. al. I’m not saying the trade will be good.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I am saying I will believe it when I see it...
All I keep hearing about is untouchables on a horrible team.
If we have so many the team should be better.
Here is the list on the ML roster of untouchables…..
Castro
Garza
I like marshall, but he is not the same as the others.
Hendry can go ahead and over value backup IF as ususal and nothing will happen.
I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.
The argument also depends on how you define a "big trade."
I have a feeling Marlon Byrd will be gone by Aug. 1. I could be wrong.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
what GM could want to torture his fans with Grabow?
Unless Hendry can trick someone into taking him, I don’t see Grabow leaving.

There have been some reports of Grabow interest.
Amazingly.

There's no reason to not wait to see if he can get more value for Grabow in a couple weeks.

We don't know what Hendry sees, though.

I wouldn't trade Garza either.
I would trade Demp, though.

Are other managers announcing their trade intentions?
Why is Jim Hendry letting the world know what the hell we are doing? I don’t understand the reasoning.

Not sure I believe this anyway.
Gammons no longer has the same credibility (or access) he once had.

Baker?
What? Did he say he wouldn’t trade Jeff Baker? Baker hits lefties really well, but that’s about the only thing he does really well. Not wanting to dump him to dump him is one thing, refusing to trade a guy like Jeff Baker is flat out stupid.
I wouldn't trade Garza either
And I’m not sure if trading Dempster makes any sense either. The Cubs still need starting pitchers for next year. I’m in favor of keeping Demp, Garza, and Z through next season and then making a bigger splash in the following off season on starting pitching. The offseason after 2012 looks like there might be more than it’s fair share of great starting pitching.
Of course, Garza should be a part of the team for much longer than 2012.
Get the big hitter (Fielder) this off season. If CJ Wilson gets too expensive, I hope the Cubs put their money back in their pocket and reload for the following off season.

I don't see this anywhere else, and it's kind of interesting
http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/5511/five-cubs-most-likely-on-contenders-radar
bq, Byrd has roughly $2 million left on his 2011 contract and is owed $6 million in 2012. Although Byrd will be an attractive player for anumber of teams, the Cubs may hesitate to move him knowing that Alfonso Soriano’s days as a starting outfielder may be coming to an end and that Fukudome’s contract is expiring. Some veteran presence will be needed to guide Brett Jackson and Tyler Colvin in 2012 when they try to establish themselves as regular outfielders.
This is most interesting because Levine is usually pretty tight with Hendry. Soriano’s days as a starting outfielder may be coming to an end?!

We have DeWitt!
On a serious note though, Bruce called Rammy a first baseman in that article. Good job.

DeWitt in LF----LOL @ the Cubs as usual.....
So we are 19 games under and he cant play the kid in the OF?
Amazingly bad managing.
Tom Ricketts approves!!!!
Things get dumber and dumber every day.

Playing DeWitt over the kids
Shows just how much Quade deserves to lead our rebuilding phase, doesn’t it?
by TheGrinch13 on Jul 17, 2011 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions
I mean, obviously, Quade has Neifitis when it comes to DeWitt.
But Campana isn’t really projected to be a big part of the club’s future. He’s a one-tool player.
I guess I understand some anguish when it comes to the Franchise. But, for months, I’ve been amazed at how much people get offended when Tony Campana et. al don’t play.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I'm not saying that he's the next Rickey Henderson.
I’m saying that I’d rather watch him play than DeWitt, as would most Cubs fans I believe.
by TheGrinch13 on Jul 17, 2011 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions
Fair enough.
But getting Campana at-bats isn’t really key to our rebuilding efforts.

while Colvin and BJax rot in the minors.
by TheGrinch13 on Jul 17, 2011 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions
I'm a big Colvin fan ...
but he was just terrible in the bigs this year. And BJax isn’t rotting. He got called up to Iowa this week AND he was hurt for part of this year.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
BJax just got called up to AAA.
We’ll see him soon, though. And Colvin needs to work some things out before he’s back, I think.
Your Baker comment is spot on, though.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
How much do you think Soriano would play if he made the same as Johnson?
I believe johnson has beaten him out for the job….But Soriano’s contract keeps him ahead of him.

Agreed on Baker.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Plus, he has no business batting above Barney in the line-up.
Why is one of our best hitters with runners in scoring position batting behind a bunch of people who don’t get on base? Pure genius….

That's probably a lefty-right balance decision.
Kind of a dumb one, admittedly.

Fair.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Its too the point where you just want them to get no-hit and have every move backfire in a spectacular fashion....
Or lose on a dropped pop up to LF….
Its sad but true
I actually thought that we were going to see the same line-up again as the previous few days.
Since they did such a great job.
Heading to a sports bar,
where the US consulate in Munich has organized a get-together for the USA vs. Japan. So I’ll miss the Cubs game this evening.

Anyone who wants to spend their time watching quality sports today will be watching the World Cup and flip to the Cubs at halftime
Rather than watching the Cubs and flipping to the WWC between innings

In general? Or this series?
It would be nice to win a series.
‘Cuz I don’t think we’re going to win this series, being down 2 games to 1 right now.
Maybe it meant “in general” or “in the future”
