Chicago Cubs vs. Philadelphia Phillies Preview, Wednesday 7/20, 1:20 CT: The Heat Is On
I don't really have a lot more to say in previewing this afternoon's game than I already said in the recap of last night's game that posted early this morning. The Cubs had a real chance to win this series Tuesday night and didn't, in large part because of bad managerial decisions.
They still have a shot at winning the series this afternoon, but they're going to have to get past a good young pitcher they've never seen before (you know how that usually goes) and Ryan Dempster is going to have to keep up his hot streak (last seven starts: 1.99 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, just one HR allowed in 45.1 innings).
Could it happen? Sure. And I could be elected King of England, too.
Oh, and it's going to be really hot this afternoon:
Today: Widespread haze. Sunny and hot, with a high near 100. Heat index values as high as 113. Southwest wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
It hasn't been 100 degrees in Chicago since July 24, 2005. The Cubs were on the road that day, defeating the Cardinals in St. Louis in a Sunday night game (game time temp: 98). I don't recall a game-time temperature at Wrigley Field of 100 since July 13, 1995, when the temperature for a night game was 103 at game time, during that year's blistering heat wave.
Cubs lineup:
Fukufome rf, Castro ss, Ramirez 3b, Pena 1b, Byrd cf, Soto c, Soriano lf, Barney 2b, Dempster p
Phillies lineup:
Rollins ss, Martinez 3b, Utley 2b, Howard 1b, Victorino cf, Ibanez lf, Brown rf, Schneider c, Worley p

Ryan Dempster hasn't faced the Phillies since last year. Current Phillies are hitting .273 (33-for-121) against him, and Ryan Howard, who's been pretty quiet in this series so far, has two lifetime home runs against him in 12 at-bats.
Vance Worley is 23. He made a number of appearances for the Phillies last year and was quite good. He's made 11 appearances (nine starts) this year and has been very good again. Only one of the starts can be categorized as not good. He has never faced the Cubs. Clearly, we are doomed.
Today's game is on CSN Chicago and CSN Philadelphia. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Glad to see Johnson not getting another start after getting 3 hits last night....
Much more important to get Soriano another start since he is so hot at the plate. Wait….
Way to manage by paycheck Quade!!!!
Can't believe I am going to sit in the bleachers today
I think this gives new meaning to ’Die Hard" fan or at least heat stroke fan. Bringing LOTs of water, some of it frozen.

Al, if you are elected King of England...
…I would humbly request that you buy the Cubs, move them to the U.K., and rename them the London Broil. I would also humbly request that you fire Mike Quade and replace him with the former Spice Girl of your choice.

Your royal Al-ness, I humbly beg thee to decree a win on this fine day.
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
funny but...
Whenever i think of a day game at Wrigley with the temp at 100….I picture Sammy Sosa pouring water on his head from the gatorade cup…

You guys want a reason to watch this game?
How ’bout this: When the center fielder for the Chicago Cubs comes up to bat, we will all be witnessing a Worley-Byrd matchup.

First off, there is no position like that anymore
The last King of England was William III and he died in 1702.
Secondly, it wouldn’t be a position where one could be elected. The secession plan to the Queen of Great Britain is pretty long indeed.
However, if you wanted to become King of England you could raise an army and take over Great Britain. You’d have to them break up the country, re-affirm the borders of England, re-create the position, and institute yourself.
The real challenge would come after that as the treaties signed by Great Britain with other countries to come to it’s defense if attacked would be engaged. Certainly, I’d worry about the Americans and the rest of the NATO countries, but the backlash from the UN countries would be fierce too.
It’s worth a shot.

Scots eat Haggis, which I doubt is very koscher.
Haggis is a dish containing sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal’s stomach for approximately three hours.

Well, that wasn't an "official" position
Technically, Queen Elizabeth can dissolve the parliaments of the 16 countries in the Commonwealth and she does on occasion. The Last King of Scotland wouldn’t stop at dissolving parliament unless it actually included acid.

The real trick comes AFTER you overthrow England and fight off NATO-
getting ELECTED as King. Because it seems silly to go through a fair, secret-ballot election after all that bloodshed, and Al will presumably have incredibly low approval ratings due to the governmental overthrow and constant war. Which I suppose was Al’s point, I guess. I mean, I suppose you could run Saddam-style elections and threaten to kill anyone who doesn’t vote for you, but that’s not really being “elected”, is it?

Sure Quade's decision last night to let Garza bat late in the game contributed to the loss.
But the Cubs had a real chance in the first to take the game and left men on. I can probably count the times on my fingers when the Cubs were in a position to move a runner over to third by hitting it to the right side of the infield and choose to fly out instead.
The Cubs are my absolute favorite sports team but I’m not a baseball guy. I know more about basketball than anything else. So when a fan with average knowledge of in-game strategy can pick stuff out and none of the coaches can (or maybe they just choose not to do it) it’s just sad.
#10 You will be missed.

The second inning too
The Cubs had a chance to blow the game open – first and third with no outs, but Lee struck out Garza (trying to bunt), Johnson, and Castro.
And the fifth inning – first and third, one out, but Ramirez popped out and Baker struck out.
The Cubs let the Phillies hang around instead of knocking them out early, and that’s a big reason they lost.

Because this team sucks
starting at the owner on down.
Last December when I was with New Orleans, our fat punk kicker, Garrett Hartley, missed a game-winner and we lost for the second week in a row – that was one of the times you want to grab a guy and tell him to [bug ] off," Fujita said. "But Hartley was young, and I didn’t want to mess him up for good, so I just bit my lip and said, ‘Hey, man, don’t worry about it — it was a team loss,’ which of course was a total lie."

ehhh
I dont think he sucks – he was just naive and is now correcting that mistake by talking with Gillick
Suckatude is not incorrectable. But until anyone proves otherwise they f-ing suck

I was at that whole Reds series back in 1995
I remember my sister having to be taken out of the bleachers by the medical people for heat stroke. It was freaking even at night.
