Chicago Cubs vs. Houston Astros Preview, Friday 7/22, 1:20 CT: Losing

Write your own caption. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

You will witness something at Wrigley Field today (whether you're there or watching on TV) that has not happened in 49 years.

The Cubs are 21 games under .500. The Astros are the only MLB team currently worse; they sit at 32 games under. 500. (For one thing, that means that even if the Astros sweep the series, they will still be in last place.)

Anyway, the last time a Cubs team was at least 20 games under .500 in July, and hosted a team that was also at least 20 games under .500, was on Sunday, July 29, 1962. Going into that date, the Cubs were 38-65. Guess who the visitors were? That's right -- Houston, then known as the Colt 45s, in their first season. They were 36-64. The teams had been rained out on July 28, so they played a doubleheader -- naturally, they split the two games, which were played in front of a sparse gathering of 10,334.

There will be more people at Wrigley Field this afternoon. But the teams they'll watch will be just about as bad.

Thunderstorms are passing through Chicago this morning, but they are expected to clear by game time.

Cubs lineup:

Fukudome RF, Castro SS, Ramirez 3B, Peña 1B, Byrd CF, Soto C, Soriano LF, Barney 2B, Zambrano P

Astros lineup:

Bourn CF, Altuve 2B, Pence RF, Lee LF, Wallace 1B, Johnson 3B, Barmes SS, Quintero C, Norris P

Carlos Zambrano threw a really nice game against the Astros on May 31 at Wrigley Field. Pay no attention to the ninth inning of that game; this is about Z. Carlos Lee has hit him hard during his career -- .369 in 65 at-bats, including six doubles and five home runs. Lee isn't the player he used to be, but he's always loved hitting at Wrigley Field.

Bud Norris has started two career games against the Cubs, both in 2010. He's got a career ERA of 1.50 vs. the Cubs, and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings. Current Cubs are hitting just .176 (6-for-34) against him with no home runs. Clearly, we are doomed.

I'm not a Hendry hater...

…I just think that his time has come and gone. It’s really too bad, because we’re only a few seasons away from one of the best in Cubs’ history turned into this mess.

I'm not a Hendry hater either...

Overall, I think he’s made more good moves than bad moves. But a team with the Cubs’ payroll should never be this inept. The talk just three years ago was to have the Cubs ALWAYS be in a position to challenge for postseason play. So in a way it’s “what have you done for me lately” with Hendry. Not that the players are let off the hook that easily – they have played poorly all season.

I honestly thought the Cubs could be close to .500 with any luck. But it’s been one big nosedive and it’s time to move on…

Hendry has done some good things and some bad things, but it’s time for a change.

But not more good than bad. Some good, more bad. Even if give him as much credit and possible you say more good things than bad, the damage of the bad is clearly far worse than the benefits of the good.

I'm not so sure

If the Gillick rumors are true, I think that the likelihood that Hendry stays takes a tick up.

From all I’ve heard, Hendry is a well liked (and respected) guy around other MLB front offices. What if Gillick comes in and thinks the problem lies elsewhere?

by jerry morales rules on Jul 22, 2011 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Then I will cry.

by shoemile on Jul 22, 2011 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Serious question, I swear

Do you think your baseball operations opinion is better than Gillick’s?

What if this (Hall of Fame inductee) baseball executive takes his good efforts, studies the situation, and comes to the conclusion that it’s not Hendry’s fault? Would you give Gillick and Hendry the benefit of the doubt?

by jerry morales rules on Jul 22, 2011 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course I don't.

Overall, that dude is way, way, smarter than me when it comes to baseball operations. If it was me building a team vs. him, his would blow me out of the water, no doubt. But that doesn’t mean that people can’t make mistakes. If it isn’t Hendry’s fault, then whose is it? I’ve just seen enough of blaming everyone but Hendry for his own failures.

GM's are in charge of Managers, not the other way around.

by shoemile on Jul 22, 2011 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

If Gillick...

…was hired and he did keep Hendry, I have a feeling it would be more because Gillick would need a year to get his arms around everything and also to keep Ricketts from needing to eat Hendry’s salary and still pay a new GM.

Also, Gillick will know Hendry won’t be able to do anything without his approval and he may think he could handle that for a year before he brings in his own GM.

With that said, if Gillick comes on board and Hendry gets an extension, I will hit the bottle real hard.

I thought Hendry should have been relieved of his duties prior to this season

and from my perspective, it has only gotten worse since. So, from the view that you and I have, I agree with you.

Maybe, though, many of the big picture decisions were made by team owners and not him. Maybe if he was provided with consistent leadership and objectives he wouldn’t have had to take the risks he did. As you wrote, everyone can make mistakes.

by jerry morales rules on Jul 22, 2011 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

It's Hendry's...

…job to define “big picture” decisions when it comes to baseball operations and I highly doubt Ricketts is a guy who took that away from him.

"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel

by MPH73 on Jul 22, 2011 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

It is Hendry's job to do that

But it can be overruled by ownership. I don’t know to the extent that ownership overruled him. That doesn’t mean I give him the benefit of the doubt. That just means that I’m open to the possibility that it could exist.

If I have a concern in regards to this, it is the ownership prior to Ricketts. The results of that were felt on Ricketts watch though.

by jerry morales rules on Jul 23, 2011 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I just don't see many risks that are currently affecting this club.

Soriano is one, obviously. But I can’t shrug off Fukudome or Bradley/Silva as being the Trib’s fault. This team is really bad, and that’s Jim Hendry’s fault.

Back up catcher

With a .601 OPS and a SB for under a million. Not sure who else we’d have here. Giving him the majority of at-bats when Soto is down rather than a called up Castillo is an obvious mistake, but either way he’s not bad to have on the team.

Don’t let being terrible in Spring Training sour your perspective on a guy.

by Ken T on Jul 22, 2011 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Being well liked...

…and respected for how you deal with people, is a hell of a lot different than being respected for your ability to run a baseball organization.

There is no question that Hendry is well liked, in fact, he may be the most well liked GM in all of baseball with his peers, because he is easy to deal with and a nice guy. But, when it comes to someone putting his reputation on the line (as Gillick would do), being well liked is not what he will be looking for in the long run.

I'll say this...

…if Gillick was hired and Hendry survived for any period of time (more than his contract) and the team started to go in a positive direction, it will simply point to Gillick’s ability to get things on the right track and make sure Hendry didn’t make any goofy decisions to set them back.

If you think Gillick is going to come in here and not interject his will in regards to; scouting, player development, organizational philosphy, approve trades and roster selection, I think you would be mistaken. He isn’t going to just sit in his office and tell Jim; “hey, its your club, go do whatever you want”.

Two things
The Astros are the only MLB team currently worse; they sit at 32 games under. 500. (For one thing, that means that even if the Astros sweep the series, they will still be in last place.)

This should be a WHEN, not an IF

Also, the good news about this awful year is that we will most likely get a top 5 pick in next year’s draft. Too early to start scouting/make predictions?

With talk of the Cubs being willing to eat a big chunk of Soriano's contract

they have to be playing him with shopping him in mind. Reed Johnson was on a hot streak hitting and has now been benched for Soriano. I’d say that we would all pitch in to help pay off Sori’s contract, but we already are.

Saw a Soriano "trade idea"....

to SF for Zito and Rowand. Money works out about the same, and it might keep Dave Bush from making some starts in August for the Cubs. And I would love to see Soriano cover LF in SF.

F*ck those f*ckin' fans who come out here and say they're Cub fans that are supposed to be behind you, rippin' every f*ckin' thing you do.

I think that idea has become an annual thing.

GM's are in charge of Managers, not the other way around.

What do SF people say about this?

Rowands got 2 rings, he must be doing something right. Plus he’d run through a wall as we saw back in his Philly days. Zito has a nice curveball…

In my lifetime please!

What Rowand did right to get those 2 rings:

He knew how to end up on teams that have dominant starting pitching.

This series is best summed up by

There's two ways to look at the rain...

Old Testament: This game promises to be such a disgrace that it’s bringing God himself to vengeful tears intent on making everyone involved completely miserable…

New Testament: God loves you all and is saving yourself from watching such a terrible game that he’s washing it out.

Weather? Rain delay? How do things look in Chicago.

If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.

From everything I can tell

on the radio and WGN Radio’s website, game’s going to be on time. I haven’t seen or heard anything to the contrary, anyhow.

It stopped raining in Iowa City around 8:30 a.m. and is a bright sunny day.

It should clear up for the game.

It's cloudy in Clear Lake.

Looks like rain again. :(

Did Bob Brenly just say it's time for the Cubs to make their move?

Bob got ahold of the good stuff, it seems.
