Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 22

I'm not going to lie to you, the Cubs system is going through a rough patch right now. But just as you shouldn't overreact to the hot start that some of the teams got off to, you shouldn't overreact to the struggles over the past ten days or so. I will say it's not jumping to conclusions to say that the offense in Peoria is just plain bad, as is the starting pitching in Iowa.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost their fifth straight game, falling to the Nashville Sounds, 5-2.

Dave Bush made his second start for Iowa and got hammered for five runs on seven hits over only 3.1 innings. Bush walked two and struck out one.

A shout-out to John Gaub and Chris Rusin, who threw the rest of the game without allowing a run. Gaub did allow an inherited runner from Bush to score, but that's not bad when you enter the game with the bases loaded and one out. Rusin allowed only one hit and Gaub none. Rusin walked one and struck out three.

The Iowa Cubs had four hits tonight and three of them were by catcher Welington Castillo. Castillo was 3 for 4 with a double and his 14th home run of the year for Iowa. It was a solo home run in the second inning. Castillo scored both Iowa runs.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies fried the Carolina Mudcats, 6-5 in ten innings.

Starter Dallas Beeler only lasted 2.2 innings, getting pulled after allowing four runs on five hits. Only one of the four runs was earned though. Beeler walked two and struck out four.

Rafael Dolis threw two perfect innings to get the win. He had one strike out.

Ty Wright was the big hero tonight, with a game-ending RBI double in the tenth inning that scored Matt Camp from first base. The hit could have been ruled a triple, which would have given Wright the cycle. Wright was 4 for 5 with two doubles and his third home run this season. It was a solo home run that tied the game in the eighth inning. Wright scored twice and had two RBI.

Center fielder Jae-Hoon Ha hit a massive home run off the scoreboard to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Ha was 1 for 4 with a walk.

First baseman Blake Lalli was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Second baseman David Macias went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Catcher Luis Flores had two doubles in a 2 for 4 night. He scored twice.

Star-divide

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were tarred and feathered by the Palm Beach Cardinals, 8-3.

Starter Dae-Eun Rhee pitched the first four innings and allowed five runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out five.

DH Michael Burgess was 1 for 3 with a two-run home run in the ninth inning. It was Burgess's 13th home run this year. He also walked once.

First baseman Justin Bour was 3 for 4 and scored twice.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs lost to the Dayton Dragons, 2-0.

Eric Jokisch was the hard-luck loser tonight. He pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs on six hits, including a solo home run. He only walked one and struck out seven.

The Chiefs have not scored in 20 innings. Tonight they had three hits. DH Dustin Geiger was 2 for 4.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks baited the Yakima Bears, 3-2 in ten innings, ending a six-game losing streak.

Starting pitcher Willengton Cruz pitched six innings and allowed one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Bryce Shafer was solid in relief as he picked up the win. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed only one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four.

Second baseman Zeke DeVoss was 2 for 4 with a walk and he scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. He reached on a bunt single, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on a two-out RBI single by DH Rafael Lopez. Lopez was 2 for 5.

Catcher Yaniel Cabezas was 2 for 4.

AZL Cubs

Lost to the Reds, 4-2.

Colvin vs. Jackson

Colvin beat Jackson in the strike out contest tonight.

by srwilly on Jul 23, 2011 12:11 AM CDT reply actions

I was at the game.

Both looked extremely lost…couldn’t hit curve balls to save their life.

I know it is a bit of a dead horse with me

but I’m really down on Colvin. I never saw him as more than a 4th outfielder but I’m even wondering about that now.

Hoon Ha is the man.

Cruz with a solid start hitting 6 IP.

DeVoss continues to be exciting.

Burgess showed signs of life thus July.

I like Wellington Castillo.

I like this Geiger guy too.

I’m excited to read BA’s top 30 for the Cubs this year so I can get some actual idea of what these guys are thought of in the wide world. I think quite a few of these lower level guys will make it, and since most are relatively new there’s very little info or words on them at all.

Iowa notes

Not very exciting…
Castillo’s shot was hammered and he looked great. Everyone else was baaaaad. Jackson and Colvin couldn’t hit curve balls. At all. I need a break from them. They make me angry.
That’s really all I’ve got for you guys…it was bad…

Oh, and the worst part(s) was the semi-attractive annoying girl who wouldn’t shut up. She brought a roster to the game and everytime a player did something would yell “Good catch Brett!” “Good hit even though you got out Ryan!” Every play. Her voice was awful. And there was a 10 year old who would not shut up until he got a ball. He harassed the Iowa players every second until someone finally gave him one in the 6th. The whole section stood up and cheered. Oh, and all the non informed Cubs fans, including my dad were talking about how LaHair is going to come up and be our starting 1B. SMH

by Ryno G on Jul 23, 2011 12:44 AM CDT reply actions

Also..

It looked like Colvin has changed his swing..it’s weird. And LaHair does a weird twitch thing with his left shoulder while batting, just so everyone knows when he comes up here and saves us…

by Ryno G on Jul 23, 2011 12:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Can't wait 'til LaHair comes up.

Sleeping giant he is. You don’t put up those kind of numbers in the PCL the 6th time around without being a potential stud for at least the pre-arb years.

by SenorGato on Jul 23, 2011 12:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Cool story...

Though you should probably realize that the disdain is more towards the idea that LaHaier can hold down 1B for a couple of years. Maybe if they follow the BCB plan and plan to lose for another 1000 years as the farm system slowly gathers prospects for The Day.

lesson

have you ever had a golf lesson?

when changes are made to a swing, the changes create a new series of mental thoughts until it becomes grooved, or automatic, then you can go back to a ‘see it hit it’ approach

If Colvin gets the EBH’s and hangs in the 25% K rate, so be it. Not everyone can be a speedy singles hitter, nor should be.

by AlexWray on Jul 23, 2011 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Nor should someone swing at everything

which Colvin appears to be doing.

sometimes

the ball gets in the way?

that is how HR’s are usually hit

you get one per at bat, if you miss it?

Jackson

Didn’t you see him in TN earlier this yr and have glowing reports. I’ve seen comments that he was pressing with Hendry in attendance . What has changed and also how did Castillo look defensively?

by joeby231 on Jul 23, 2011 1:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

I saw him twice with Tennessee. I still like the guy, I wasn’t trashing him or anything, he’s just not doing well right now. He worked his counts, and then once he got two strikes dude threw the curve and he was out. He showed the same attitude I liked with Tennessee though. He finally got pissed after his third strike out (which was with 2 on, I believe) and threw his bat. It seemed like he was helping his teammates out telling them what the guy was throwing, even though he couldn’t hit it. All his K’s were swinging. And Castillo looked good. He missed a play at the plate on the throw from Snyder, but it was a tough catch. Still should have probably made the play though. I think he was focusing too much on blocking the plate than the throw.

Pretty terrible

Minus a few guys..Castillo, Geiger, DeVoss, and Cruz. Wow. 4 guys. Sweet.

by Ryno G on Jul 23, 2011 12:46 AM CDT reply actions

Na

750k bonus and so far this yr he started in EXST moved to TN for a couple games, then sent to Peoria, demoted to Boise and now he is in Mesa, his head must be spinning. Good to see Dong-Yub Kim starting to hit, I’ve always been enamored with him after the comparisons to Canseco prior to his shoulder surgery. As far as trading major league guys for prospects, why bother, Burgess, Smit and Wallach have all been terrible.

by joeby231 on Jul 23, 2011 12:55 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think anyone was expecting too much out of them

We were hoping for lightning in a bottle with Burgess, and just potential.

by Ryno G on Jul 23, 2011 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Na is terrible

He has no value whatsoever. He plays like Campana, except he is only an average runner. So he can’t beat any throws to first for hits, and even when he does reach first he isn’t fast enough to steal.

Synopsis of 2011 Cubs Minor League System

Cashner-Wins job out of camp, suffers shoulder injury first start, lost for season
Colvin- Hit 20 bombs as a rookie in less than 400abs doesn’t progress and now struggling in AAA
Vitters- Cubs brass say’s he’s poised for breakout yr.- Not happening
McNutt-#1 pitching prospect has hardly thrown due to recurring blister problems and a ribcage injury
Whitenack-Breakout early season pitcher who was injured and required TJS
Simpson- Got Mono when he came to Chicago to sign his contract. Got hammered in Peoria and things haven’t changed in Mesa. Club just want’s him to still enjoy baseball after the season
Overly aggressive promotion’s with Struck and Beeler and the fact that many of are top end guys will be 19rs old and younger heading into next season playing lo A and short season ball
This was done sarcastically, I like where were headed with Rickett’s but Geez

by joeby231 on Jul 23, 2011 1:38 AM CDT reply actions

One thing to remember about Vitters

is that he is the age of a college Junior basically. I know it seems like he’s been in the system forever, but this is his first full healthy year at AA, and he hasn’t even turned 22 yet. All that to say, he hasn’t made significant improvements in the one area that is most likely to prevent him from ever contributing at the majors, his plate discipline. But he’s been respectable at AA as a 21 year old. Maybe won’t ever be a star, but there’s still time for him to turn things around and be an MLB contributor.

by Bradsbeard on Jul 23, 2011 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

i don't disagree

that vitters can still develop into something resembling a useful bat, but he’s still pretty much a bust. he’s never hit enough to be worth anything as a trade chip and even in a best case scenario he won’t be ready until 2013.

Dave Bush

AKA “bulldog” used to be a fan favorite though I can’t really explain why. The sabre crowd seemed to really love him. I remember stat analyses that would make him out as an emerging #2 pitcher. He seemed to think he was pretty good too. One time he got huffy because Macha changed the rotation around and he didn’t have his regular schedule/rest.

Melvin was infatuated with him. He was shocked nobody offered him anything last year at the trade deadline for him.

He’ll always have the no-no he took into the 8th against Philly. Hell, he beat Philly in the playoffs. Do the Cubs play Philly again this year? It’d be funny if they brought him up for a spot start.

Cubs don't play the Phillies again this year.

I hope Dave Bush never inhabits a major league Cubs uniform.

is definitely the right choice of word there. It has the right feel.

yeah

I confess, I’ll chuckle if he does. Bush, Looper, Davis rattling around this year. Come to think of it Suppan was in the minors too. Melvin is good at some things, but buying pitching has largely been turrible.
