Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 26
It's the "everyone wins" edition. Well, except for Peoria who didn't want to ruin a perfect night by playing baseball. Big day for home runs down on the farm with ten tonight.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs blew past the New Orleans Zephyrs (Marlins), 2-1.
Casey Coleman had his best start of the year, allowing only one run on six hits over seven innings. He struck out four and more importantly, didn't walk anyone.
Scott Maine pitched the ninth inning and allowed a two-out single, but no runs as he collected his tenth save. Maine struck out three.
All the I-Cubs runs scored on a two-run double by center fielder Lou Montanez in the second inning. Montanez was 3 for 4.
Catcher Chris Robinson was 3 for 4 and scored once.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies burnt the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 9-8 in ten innings.
Ryan Searle started and pitched the first 4.2 innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. Searle walked two and struck out five.
Marcus Hatley and Jeff Beliveau combined to blow an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Each one gave up a two-run home run. Hatley pitched 1.2 innings and was charged with allowing three runs on four hits. Hatley walked one and struck out two.
After Beliveau allowed the game-tying home run in the ninth, he pitched the tenth inning to get the win. Beliveau pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Second baseman Nate Samson hit the solo home run in the top of the tenth inning that provided the margin of victory. It was his fourth home run this year. Samson was 2 for 5 with a triple and the homer. He scored twice.
DH Ty Wright hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie. It was his third home run for the Smokies and fourth overall. Wright was 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored twice.
Third baseman Josh Vitters was 2 for 5 with his tenth home run of the season. It was a solo home run in the second inning. Vitters had two RBI.
Right fielder James Adduci hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Adduci went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. Adduci scored twice and batted two in. He now has three home runs this year.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs were more cosmopolitan than the St. Lucie Mets, 10-5.
Starter Casey Harman came within one out of going five innings and getting the win. As it was, he pitched 4.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. One of the four runs was unearned. Harman walked one and struck out five.
Because Harman didn't go five, Jordan Latham got his fifth win. Latham pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits. Latham struck out one and did not walk anyone.
Kyle Smit pitched the final two innings to get his first save. He did not allow a run or a hit. He walked one and struck out two.
The D-Cubs hit four home runs tonight, including three in the first two innings to take an early 8-0 lead. Third baseman Greg Rohan hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. It was his first home run in the Florida State League and sixth overall. Rohan was 3 for 4 with two doubles and eight total bases. Rohan also walked and scored three times.
Left fielder Michael Burgess hit a solo home run two batters later. Burgess was 3 for 5 with two RBI. Burgess now has 14 home runs this season.
Shortstop Logan Watkins hit his third home run with a man on in the second inning. Watkins was 1 for 4 and scored twice.
First baseman Justin Bour hit a two-run home run in the ninth to close out the scoring for the D-Cubs. It was his 21st of the season. Bour was 1 for 5.
Center fielder Matt Szczur went 2 for 3 with two doubles. He scored twice and had one RBI. Szczur also threw out a runner trying to score, although he also made an error trying to throw out another runner trying to score on the next play in the fifth inning. He was pinch-hit for in the sixth inning. I do not know why.
Catcher Chad Noble was 2 for 4.
Peoria Chiefs
Got home from Kentucky. Went bowling and tried to forget the road trip.
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks beat the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 5-4.
Austin Reed started and pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits, although one of the runs was unearned. Reed walked two and struck out three.
Jin-Young Kim got his second win in relief of Reed. Kim pitched two innings and gave up one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Bryce Shafer picked up his sixth save with a scoreless ninth. He allowed one hit and walked one. Shafer struck out two.
Catcher Rafael Lopez had a big night tonight, going a perfect 3 for 3 with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. It was his second home run this year. Lopez also doubled and had four total RBI. He was also hit by a pitch.
DH Yaniel Cabezas hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, his first of the season. Cabezas was 1 for 4.
Second baseman Dustin Harrington was 3 for 4 with two doubles. He scored twice.

Think Cubs are close to a trade?
Jackson didn’t play and Szczur was pulled. And not for an injury. Jackson to MLB and Szczur to AA?
I don't think
they’d pull Szczur over a promotion to Tennessee. Why would they? So that he doesn’t get hurt before he can help a team that’s already made the playoffs? I assume he had some sort of injury, but I don’t know that. Could have been related to the two throws home he made in the previous inning.

I know it'd be aggressive and I don't like it
But I was just thinking outside the box. It just seemed fishy…
Jackson's non-start is puzzling though
He just sat a few games ago. I doubt he needed to rest anything.
Byrd and Fukudome to Atlanta?

Promoted?
Since his jump to Daytona, his K% has rose and his BB rate has cut in half. What would be the justification to further push him?

I'm not the Cubs.
If you read above, I said it would be aggressive and I wouldn’t like it. I wasn’t saying it as “Maybe he got promoted to AA!!!” I was just thinking of reasons why he would have left. And Brett not playing. It was just fishy.
I think Colvin is the first OF to get promoted after a trade.
The Cubs would have to trade 2 OF’s or 1 and Pena for BJax to get the call in my humble opinion. Colvin is the first up.
Colvin has no business seeing an MLB lineup this year, IMO
He’s done terribly at AAA so far and shows no signs of improving his discipline or being able to hit a good breaking ball.
He should still get a September callup
But barring a trade, I agree with you otherwise.
I wouldn't be moving
Jackson up anytime soon. He just had a stretch where he went 0-16 and he’s only hitting 0.205.
I sincerely hope they hold off on moving him up any farther for right now.
They have two liter bottles now? To think I spent all that time demanding a liter!
If Jackson is what you've said he is...
Which is basically a high energy, skilled ballplayer then I wouldn’t mind him being called up a little early. The guy IS the top prospect in the system anyway, and from what You’ve written about him Ryno he might even be a shot in the arm for the club.
I do hope a trade happens fn…ASAP. I’d like to see both Jackson And Lemahiu again. Colvin too to be perfectly honest.

Anyway..
Szczur with another huge game. HR and 2B yesterday and 2 2Bs tonight. Power surge. My love for him is strong. Vitters a great game…it’d be nice if he could hit 17+ HRs. Solid start from Reed. I miss DeVoss and Golden abunch.
Mike Trout Jr.
Or Sr. since he is two years older ;)

I miss DeVoss and Golden as well
Although it sounds as if both should be back soon, possibly tonight. I probably won’t tune in to a Boise game until at least one of them is back. That’s not true. I’ll probably listen tonight as Willengton Cruz is starting.
When you look at that 2007 draft and see All the players the cubs
Skipped to draft Vitters and then you see that kid Freddie Freeman play who was drafted in the second round right out of high school it is enough to make you sick.
Vitters might make the majors but because of his draft position it looks like he will be labeled a bust.

Come on, man.
I’m on board with you on Vitters sucking. I’ve been on board with that for a long time, but do you really have to say that after a night where he goes 2-5 with a dinger and another RBI?

Bad a pick Vitters really was. What scares me is the cubs are going to pick third again this time.

So if Vitters goes...
…0-4 tonight then the comment makes sense?
Guys go up and down every day or sometimes weeks or months at a time. We cannot let a performance from one game sway our opinions and/or reality. It just isn’t enough.
But...
…I do not like to play the what if game too often. It is just too easy to look at things in hindsight. Most people really liked the Vitters pick when it happened, and he isn’t dead yet.
He may, though, need to start next year at AA again. Not bad, but then again, not what everyone wanted.
Disagree
Most people wanted Matt Weiters to be the pick. Taking Vitters was the Cubs way of pinching pennies at the top of the draft.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
This.
I don’t have to play the hindsight game. I gave them the benefit of the doubt when they drafted him… but I haven’t liked him for one minute after I saw him play. He hasn’t done anything to change my mind. He doesn’t play defense. He has spotty plate discipline at best. He doesn’t have enough power to make up for it. So far, it’s a terrible, terrible pick. I wish him all the luck in the world proving me wrong, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Did you bother to read my comment… like all of it? Especially the part where I agreed with his comments and think he absolutely sucks? But I’m not going to stick it in his face that he sucks, like OP did, the night after he did good things. What the hell is the point of that? Where was OP the rest of the season? Vitters has given him a whole season to make those kind of comments, and he just starts now… after a good day?

If you're going to go after them for not taking Freeman
why not point out the 77 players who were taken ahead of him?
The word “bust” gets thrown out way too much and way too early. He’s been a disappointment so far, but this season he’s been taking a small step forward.

He's only 21. from what i understand he is a bit slender.
But isnt he 6’2" or so? If he got himself to Camp Colvin, packed on some muscle itd be beneficial i believe. But i am encouraged by his season. i don’t think he should be at Wrigley next year, but i’m willing to hold off judgement for another couple years, since im guessing ARam will be back on a 2 year deal or something (hopefully)
I'm still cautiously optimistic about Vitters
This year hasn’t been awful, just kind of blah. Yes, the walks are still a huge problem, but if he gets on a hot streak to end the year I could see his prospect status improving quite a bit. Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t think this is his make or break year. When he turns 23 and still hasn’t shown the necessary improvements, I will be ready to jump ship, but I think he has at least another year to break out.

The Tyler Colvin Era is over...
Ok, I’ve officially decided. Tyler Colvin is a bust. He’s piled up an impressive 1/11 walk/SO ratio in a hitters league, with no power numbers. And he had the impressive “golden sombrero” (4K’s in 4 ab’s) the other night. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=LF&sid=t451&t=p_pbp&pid=502125
And he turns 26 in a month. Don’t know what the use would be of bringing him up for an extended look if Kosuke is dealt. Time to turn the page.
You can tell a guy's career is over from a stats sheet?
He is hitting the ball hard and looking to drive it. He is not over matched and isn’t making bad outs.
The worst part of his game right now is base running.
Sometimes you learn a lot by watching games.
Drew
Worst part of his game is
he swings at everything and misses too much. No one can succeed with his approach.
John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

A .270 OBP in 200+ PA in AAA is a pretty epic fail if a player wants to make it back to the majors
Thsoe kinds of stats never get better when he goes back to facing major league pitchers.
The only ray of light may be if he is still off form from the injury last year. I don’t think the Cubs should release him just yet, but bringing him back to the NL would not be a favor.
Then he must be REALLY bad at running bases
Because he has NO plate discipline and can’t hit a AAA breaking ball either. He’s in serious trouble if he doesn’t fix his approach.
I would take his numbers last year against Fuko's this year
Not sure where you are coming up with him not being able to hit a AAA breaking balls. I saw him double and triple off breaking balls last week.
Last year he hit breaking balls better than fastballs.
If you don’t like the guy that’s fine but don’t make stuff up.
Drew
We'll trust the stats...
until you show us your scouting credentials. I don’t care what you think you saw.
Tyler Colvin (2010) – .4 WAR
Kosuke Fukudome (2011) – 2.6 WAR
His fault, not his fault, whatever… This year, he’s erased all the benefit he MIGHT have had over Fukudome… except his age, of course.

'Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.'
Michael Burgess
is en fuego. Hitting .333/.442/.611 over his past 10 games with 3 HRs, a 2B, and more impressively, 6 BBs to only 6 Ks.
His post all-star line is solid as well: .297/.388/.508, 5 HRs, 8 2Bs, 1 3B, 17 BBs, 23 Ks. That K rate is under 20% and the walk rate is almost 13%. It’s only 34 games, but I really want this guy to become the hitter he can be.
I've been eyeing Burgess' performance too...
Great month of July for him. I still fully believe he can be a good power bat off the bench in the majors, and he’s got the tools and upside to be more.
Goldens got a similar tool/skill set to Burgess, and if he shows some development then I think I’ll be even more optimistic about Golden .

Slightly OT
but I wish there were some way we could steal Colby Rasmus from the Cardinals. Obviously the market for him is going to be competitive, but they seem dead set on moving him. Eventually, Colby will outgrow his dad’s influence, right?
I'm not sure Rasmus is the bad guy here
TLR wants to make him into more of a contact-oriented slap hitter. The guy has 30 HR potential and solid walk rates, why mess with it? I would take his 2010 season out of my CFer every year.
Sounds like the Blue Jays are getting him
I can’t see the Cardinals wanting to trade him to us in any case.

Alot of the Blue jays top talent are
very recent signees. Lots of new talent in that system, so maybe that’s where the upside comes from.
I still think it’s a dumb move. They obviously feel having Pujols and then Holliday/Molina is enough to get Retreads and young players to play up, but to give up a talented young CF for that group of players seems off.
by SenorGato on Jul 27, 2011 3:40 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
The only other thought is that this is the beginning of a Cardinals final season fun and rebuild?
Pujols, Berkman, Jackson and Chris Carpenter are all free agents at seasons end (and Type A comp guys)
Wainwright and Molina have Club options for next season (what a novel ideal Jim Hendry)
We very well might be witnessing a club that is going to enter a massive rebuild at seasons end. Only difference is that they will do it with tons of draft picks and high end prospects if they choose to take that path.

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
Think they'll offer Berkman arbitration?
Seems like a risk they wouldn’t take, unless they were going to put him at 1B… but even then, he doesn’t fit into a rebuild. I’m not sure the Cardinals can afford to do a rebuild with draft picks given that they just opened up a new stadium. That would not look good.

Definately
He will be looking for a multi-year deal, and is only earning $8 million this year. The Cards only have to offer him $6.4 million in arbitration. He’s a Type B FA, so it won’t hurt his FA stock, either.
He makes $8m this year on a 1 year deal...

He's thinking the 20/80% rule for Arbitration 1,2,3 guys
Berkman wouldn’t qualify for that.
It’s likely a moot point anyway though. Berkman will want to get one last long term deal before its too late. I’m sure he’d take 3/30 elsewhere before taking a 1 year 10-12 million dollar arbitration figure from the Cardinals.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
That might be the case...
but you think that’s a risk a “rebuilding” Cardinals team would be willing to take to try to get a Type B draft pick? (This is obviously hypothetical since the Cardinals will be far from rebuilding when they still have Matt Holliday to pay. If they were going to rebuild, they would have done it before the new Busch stadium opened. They’re far from needing a rebuild effort.)

Are you sure?
I don’t believe a team has to offer any more than 80% of the previous year’s salary to an impending FA.
But Berkman would ask for more and win.
So that’s a moot point.
The Cardinals have a really good fanbase
The thought of 8 extra 1st and Sandwich picks, plus the haul you could get with Wainwright, Molina and Holliday if you chose. Would likely quell some of the unrest.
Especially since they would have 100 million dollars of payroll to play with going forward.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
There's no way they plan to rebuild....
They just traded a 3rd year CF who isn’t even 25…Rasmus would theoretically be a part of the rebuild. I think they aim to keep Pujols so the offense has at least a bonafied anchor, and keep doing what they do around him.
