perhaps you can edit your fanpost to link to the MLB page
the video is 19 times more clear. Maybe the ump was watching the shaky video instead of the crisp one when he made the call?

that's a bad angle, he looks safe on that one
but looking from the opposite side, it’s clear that he barely tagged him.
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
Both angles show a tag clearly being made.

As an umpire
Even if this tag is missed by 1 billioniath of an inch – this is an out.

So you call people out who are safe?
"Prince Fielder is too fat even for the Oakland A’s" - Billy Beane
It's different... clearly if the catcher wanted to he could jam his whole glove in Lugo's face and scream "out!"
He’s got him by four feet. The catcher was doing what kept him and the runner most safe, while clearly still tagging him out. As an umpire, there is no way you look at this play and thing, “maybe the swipe tag was 1/100th of an inch off?!”
I think an out call here
would be the right one…even if you think he missed him by fractions of an inch, clearly the C is trying to avoid contact and injury, no real different to the neighborhood call at 2b…
Worst part?
Now the Cardinals are in first place.

Somehow I think this is karmic payback for Hurdle
who got his team to the playoffs and badly missed safe call at the plate.
PS how long till Al posts another why MLB must start using replay.
I am going with 9AM CST.

This should be the nail in the coffin for any "Human element" arguments.
If you’re an MLB umpire, you can’t make a call like this. That was an “I’m tired, I want to go home” call by Meals.

That will never work.

It will slow the games down, and take away from the human element of baseball! No one in my office wants that. Or if you add a fifth umpire, we’ll have to pay them and I won’t make as much money.

That might help, but letting umpires throw games with no repercussions is a strategy of failure. This call is dramatic but what he did happens all the time. None of them can be fired unless you catch them taking money. They are more permanent than federal judges.
"Prince Fielder is too fat even for the Oakland A’s" - Billy Beane
Just curious,
What other examples exist along the lines of what you bring up here? Because I can’t remember a call that was this bad and cost a team a game. The Giants were the victims of a horrendous call last year, too. Imagine the uproar if they had missed the playoffs because of that.
I don’t know if Pittsburgh has any staying power yet, but calls like this should never have been made. And the fact that Jerry Meals still hasn’t owned up to it? Reprehensible.

But seriously. We need replay review. What if the Pirates miss the playoffs by one game?

LOL at Proctor slipping.
But Lugo is definitely full of it when he says he didn’t tag him, you could tell by the reaction that he knew he was out.

Instant replay is definitely the answer.
I was just as outraged as anyone when I first saw the play. But I can see how the ump may have legitimately believed the catcher missed the tag. Of course, he still should’ve called him out — how many times have we seen a similiar out call on a stolen base attempt?
Baseball is pitching, hitting, baserunning and defense.
Oops, didn't mean for that to be a reply.
Proctor’s fall coming out of the box was pretty hilarious, though.
