Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview, Wednesday 7/27, 7:10 CT: Building For The Future

That's a HUGE baseball! Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers slides as Starlin Castro of the Chicago Cubs throws at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by Scott Boehm/Getty Images)

I don't have much for you this evening, previewing tonight's game, so let's talk about the future. I have learned today that the Cubs expect to set an all-time club record for spending on both draft and international signings this year -- the exact amount isn't available -- but that goes along with what some of you have been posting about the Cubs signing players you might not have thought they would in the past.

Also, although it's not official yet and may not be until closer to the Aug. 16 deadline, it does appear that both first round pick Javier Baez and second round pick Dan Vogelbach will be signed and in the fold, although perhaps not early enough to play any games this year.

So while this season may be a lost cause, I believe the Cubs' future is bright and they are doing the right things to build a strong organization.

Cubs lineup:

RF Fukudome, SS Castro, 3B Ramirez, 1B Pena, CF Byrd, C Soto, LF DeWitt, 2B Barney, P Zambrano

Brewers lineup:

RF Hart, CF Morgan, LF Braun, 1B Fielder, 2B Weeks, 3B McGehee, SS Betancourt, C Lucroy, P Greinke

Carlos Zambrano has pitched twice already this year in Miller Park; he has a win and a loss, but also a 6.75 ERA and 16 hits allowed in 12 innings there. I keep wondering when the consistent Big Z we saw the last two months of 2010 is going to show up. You know, having an outing like this one he had in Miller Park last September. Maybe today...

The Cubs hit Zack Greinke really hard on June 16 at Wrigley Field, his only career start against them. Greinke did strike out 10 Cubs, but they got eight hits and eight runs (six earned) off him in 5.1 innings, including a HR from Carlos Pena. Greinke throws strikes (he's walked only 18 this year in 87.1 innings), and maybe that's why the Cubs, a free-swinging team, can hit him well, like they do with Roy Halladay. We'll see.

Gotta keep Senor Gato happy too.

Sickles didn’t report on the farm system. He reported on his own preseason picks. A farm system report would include all of the players having a good year that were not on his preseason picks list.

His report only concludes that his preseason top 20 was not very accurate.

I sound like I'm asking for a trade for the sake of a trade, but I'm not.

Mainly, I want people moved that are old or blocking younger players. It’s not sensible to think we have a lot of trade chips (at least ones that Hendry wants to trade…), but methinks it is sensible to think a player or two should be moved and sent with a pile of cash.

I don't think this attitude is helping, either, Al

saying something from a non-verifiable source is “incontrovertably true” comes across as arrogant. I believe, you, I really do, and I hope you’ll continue to share whatever inside information you get. I just also believe many readers would be more comfortable if you said “I can’t verify it, so take it for what it’s worth” and then don’t bother to defend it if people choose to doubt until the outcome is revealed.

I'm a little late to the game here,

but I think you’re equating trade rumors with like, things that will be easily proven. If the Cubs spend a lot of money on international stuff, and the dollar value is the most in club history, then it’s a fact.

This isn’t a case of he-said / she-said rumor mill, and we won’t ever fully know if a rumor was such, this is actually something that is tangible and can easily be proven.

In short, you’re getting your panties all in a bunch over nothing.

The surrounding fields are nice too

Before this year they were an Angel affiliate...

I’ve taken the family there and had a great time. iv shears this year the fanbase has taken a turn for the worse with the change in club affiliation. I wonder how mu h of that is true and not slanted with perception of the Dodgers at this time?
