What is Z's value?
Over on MLB trade rumors, they suggest the Cubs would have to throw in $14M, which would make him the equivalent of a $5M/yr pitcher. That seems a bit of a low ball on his value. Frankly, at that value I wouldn’t see much use in trading him unless the Cubs got some good prospects in return.
Eamus Ursuli!
If the Cubs had to throw in that much, then definitely don't do it...
unless the return is huge… even then. Don’t cut the Yankees that much of a break. I don’t want him gone that bad.

I bet he'd get 2 years / $16M on the open market
To an NL team anyway. His value is lower in the AL where he can’t bat.
Hmmm
There may be a couple of AL teams that could use him as a DH. Maybe his value is higher in the AL (or at least we can dream).

It would be about a $7m pitcher btw...
those figures are splitting the $10m he’d be owed into both years, when most of this year is already over.

Not true.
They only want players that Hendry is unwilling to trade that won’t be on the team anyways the next time the team is competitive.

Who cares?
What matters is who is pitching in 2013. The year in which the Cubs might have a chance at competing.

But you recognize that's not likely, right?
And passing up a chance to improve the team in 2013 for marginal improvements in 2012 might further push away the chance the Cubs can ultimately be a winner in 2013 or beyond?

I don’t have anything against Z, but he’s not really that good.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
but is he worth $7 million
on the mound (which is what I am guessing the Cubs would eat – minimum) and I think he is especially when you factor in Z merchandise which would lower that figure even more
The Cubs would be giving the Yankees a steal at that price...
unless they were getting uber premium talent in return.

by jameslcrockett on Jul 27, 2011 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions
and that is what I am saying
from what I have seen and heard around the best the Cubs can hope for is $7-8 million a year in salary relief…at that point it makes no sense to trade him.
Same story for Sori – if the Cubs really do have to eat 95% (Kaplan said yesterday that an AL scout told him that his team wouldnt even take Sori for free – take that for what its worth) of his remaining deal and we save a whopping $3 million over the life of the deal, then there is no point in trading him as the merchandise that he sells will be worth that.
Soriano is a little different...
because he is so patently useless without a DH spot to stash him. There’s no hope with him. There’s some hope with Zambrano… and his contract only runs through this year, unlike Soriano’s. The Cubs would be massively better off if they just cut Soriano tomorrow. He’s a waste of a roster spot on a NL team. The Cubs can no longer afford to waste that roster spot on players they cannot trust to do their job. More than that, this franchise, especially with Hendry at the helm, can’t move on with him on the team. He’s a cancer sucking the life out of this entire organization (and I don’t use that word lightly).

Just asking: Why does it seem the Cubs are regularly
trading 3 or 4 players to another team for ONE player, OR they are paying $xx.x million to the team they are trading with just so the other team will take the Cubs’ player?

Lets say the Cubs send Zambrano to the Yankee's + cash to cover the entire contract.
What kind of hit would it be for the Yankee’s because of the Luxury Tax? How much MORE would they have to spend if Big Z’s contract is covered in full from Cubs? What is the Tax rate anyways?
Not enough for the Yankees to ever care.

Hendry: But surely you dont want him on the team next year when you are GM…
Cashman: No but this way I can trade him for players that are good…
Hendry: (silence)
Cashman: LAWYERED!!!!!
I just absolutely do not see an actual strategy from this front office
So…Baker and Marshall are untouchable, but Carlos Zambrano is someone we’re desperate to get rid of?
What’s the difference? If the only difference is the obvious one, I don’t think it bodes well for the future of this franchise under Ricketts.

If and when Zambrano does get traded,
I, for one, will be saddened. I know, if we get the right players in return, if we free up money for future deals, if we make it safe for Gatorade coolers everywhere, yadda yadda yadda…but Zambrano has been fun to watch for the past eleven years. Frustrating, yes. Maddening, yes. But always interesting and at times thrilling (9-14-08). For every strike out he threw and every home run he hit, he’s been one of the all-time great Cub hurlers. Eight straight winning seasons (this would be his ninth), a career 123-79 record, 16th most wins by a Cub, 4th best since 1950, 1525 K (2nd only to Fergie Jenkins), and 22 career HR (most for any Cub pitcher and tied w/Glenn Beckert, among others). It will be a sad day in my baseball world when Zambrano leaves town.

if youre only saving $7 million
whats the point, between getting a replacement pitcher and Z merchandise he would be worth that – now if you’re talking $10-12 million in savings sure…
same with Soriano – if the Tweetersphere is to believed and the Cubs would have to eat 95% of the contract whats the point – as long as the Manager benches the guy to free up slots for a young buck
I think they'll trade some guys.
They won’t get back anything to get excited about though.

This is our home, and we have to try to win as many games as possible.’’

No not at all
Z is the one who gets so angry at losing he calls out teammates. Not a great strategy but it does some up who he is and how he feels. Perhaps the words sound similar to what some other player might say Nuke LaLoosh style, but I have no doubt Z really means it. Given the way he was treated last year , you would think he would want the hell out of Dodge , but I believe that he not only wants to win, he wants to make the Cubs a winner and sincerely does not want to leave.

"Wants to win"
I have no doubt that Z wants to win and that he wants to win as a Cub. I’m just not so convinced that he’s willing to do everything it takes in order to win. Though he’s lost weight the past couple of years, I don’t believe his conditioning is as good as it needs to be. I also wonder if he does all he needs to do in in-season game preparation.

Basically.....
He’s no longer good enough to put the Cubs in a position to win on a regular basis.

wow everyone is ready to cast away Z
when last year he put up a 128 ERA+ – worth his contract, no but worth the $7-8 million we would get in salary relief if we traded him – yes plus it isnt like he is blocking anyone
But he will be gone after next season.
Why prolong the inevitable?
Hopefully the Cubs make moves to build a rotation for the future—which Zambrano will not be a part of.

Z spend the 2010 off season in Chicago
to work out. Much more than the vast majority of other players, let alone one Central America

Who cares?
He has an ERA near 5. All that extra working out really paid off!

Phtttt
I’ve seen him working out at the health club by me. He wasn’t going that hard. Of course, that was only once, but the personal trainers all said they’ve never seen him go particularly hard. He probably was doing his real workouts elsewhere and just going there for light cardio.
Losing weight isn’t the same thing as being in shape, and being in shape for a pro athlete is even different. I like Zambrano, seriously. I get the impression that his heart is totally into winning, but I’m not so sure about his mind and his body.

I guess just as words in an article they don't come across as being very strong.
It doesn’t appear anyone wants to leave, though. I’m not sure that’s a good thing anymore.
Fire Jim Hendry.
'treated last year'
I mean, putting him in the bullpen was dumb, but Z has made a career of doing dumb things. I don’t have much sympathy for him.
He’s been much calmer and less of an idiot since last August, and that’s great. But he’s not that great a pitcher, and he’s extremely overpaid. He definitely cares, and I appreciate that. But I don’t think we should cast Z as a victim.

he can go somewhere else.

It's not nothing.
The Cubs reportedly contacted the Yankees and tried to get them to take Z and cash. The Yankees didn’t bite.
That was news, whether it amounts to a new destination for Zambrano. AND it was reported by multiple reporters.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Well, essentially, then it's nothing.
Because Z is still a Cub. No trade happened. Yes, it was reported, and appears to be what actually happened.
In the end, it’s nothing.

Honestly, Al ...
The fact that the Cubs wanted to trade their former ace and an $18 million pitcher is essentially nothing? Really? You’re sticking with this?
Come on, Al. I think what you did the other day with the “big things are in discussions” was perfectly fine. But to imply that this was worthless — and that 160-plus comments weren’t worthwhile — is wrong and, sorry to say, inconsistent.
If the Cubs don’t make any moves this week, will you call what you did yesterday “essentially nothing”? Because that had more than 1,000 comments. In both cases, nothing might end up being the result.

No. He'll say that when he was told, his sources were right.
Just like the last time his “sources” told him a bunch of shit that turned out to be….shit.
If Al didn’t act like only HIS sources were to be trusted (when they’ve proved less than reliable) this wouldn’t be nearly as annoying, but the fact that anytime someone posts a thread about trade rumors you can freaking COUNT on Al showing up at some point to call it “mere speculation” or “nothing” makes it pretty damn ridiculous

Oh.
Sorry. Thought you were referring to what I posted yesterday about sources and what I have found out from them.
Anyway… the Z thing DID turn out to, essentially, be nothing. Because he’s still a Cub and likely to remain one.

Nowhere did the rumors say he was getting traded in the next five minutes. If THAT’S you standard for it being “nothing” then you just admitted that your rumors are nothing as well.

I hate to pile on, Al... I honestly really do...
But if the extent of Cubs trades are Fukudome and, say one other minor piece (Grabow / Baker / DeWitt, et al.), then would you say what you posted the other day was “nothing”??
Heck, in that post you were careful, and rightful I would add, that the information you got may be ‘right at the time’, even if it didn’t manifest in a trade(s) because things can change.
So, by that same string of logic, isn’t it also correct that the Z info could be “right at the time” and just changed… resulting in nothing (at least to this point)??
Please don’t get me wrong… I trust you and your sources far more than the majority of the beat writers (especially the slop throwers, like Gordo and Rogers). But I believe elgato is right, here. You seem to be taking the position that most everything posted by others, including the MSM guys (gals, on occasion), is “purely speculation” that should be disregarded… while we should take your sources as gospel. As much as I trust and like you for all the work you do for us… you seem to be taking something of a double-standard approach.

I'm not sure that matters, Al.
I believe you. Honestly. I absolutely 100% believe you have a source that clued you in to transactions the Cubs were/are hoping to make. Beyond that… I’m hoping there are big things coming for the Cubs. That would be the bright spot of the season.
When you say “trust me, I’ve got a source”, that carries more weight with me than most, if not all of the MSMers because you don’t throw it around.
To me, that doesn’t change the fact that you often run down other rumors that cite ‘unnamed sources / people close to the situation’.
Because while you are right that some of them (cough cough Gordo & Phil cough cough) just make stuff up and/or speculate… many of them do have real sources they need to protect, too.

So if Z gets traded before the deadline,
Will the rumors of the Cubs trying to unload him still be “nothing”?

I've got some information
From some confidential sources. I can’t reveal specifics, but they detail trades the Cubs might (or might not) make. Things may or may not end up happening. Discuss.

Believe me, there is no malicious intent there.
It’s just … I know you trust your sources and that they have asked you not to give specifics. Which makes any discussion about the trades your sources intimate might be happening nothing more than speculation. This is a little strange, considering how you comment on anyone who speculates on what trade might be coming by saying it is “nothing”.
The way I see it, with the trade deadline approaching, any talk about any trade is the same at this point … it’s speculation. Whether the sources are the people you have spoken to or the ones we link to, it’s really all the same. Do I know what’s going to happen? Of course not. But I’d rather wait and see what happens before I post any kind of discussion based upon something that might not even take place to begin with.

Z'b best chance
Was in 2006. The team sucked yet he had 16 wins. You wanted prospects for the future, you trade Zambrano. It didn’t happen and unless he goes completely AWOL on the team (and that wouldn’t be surprising) he’s here for most his career.
