Pirates inquire on Pena, but sense Cubs not interested
Really? Are you serious Hendry? Pena is a FA at the end of the year... so there's a very good chance he's not part of the team's future anyway... an we're 22 FRIGGIN GAMES UNDER .500.
Make the damn deal and move on.

I see Pena at 1B in 2012 for the Cubs
Unless we get value in return, I have no problem with it.
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
Do you see Pena in 2012 because...
… you think we’ll try and fail to get Fielder or Pujols? Or because you would rather pay Pena and use the money differential between Pena and Pujols/Fielder at other positions?
"Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes..."
I think some of that money could be used to acquire starting pitching.

This team needs a middle of a order guy.
Period. Ramirez & Friends will not get it done.

I think Pena
because Fielder and Pujols will go to better teams.

I don't want to say it's a foregone conclusion that
one of those two will be a Cub, but it’s pretty damn close.
Unless someone pimpsmacks us like the Yankees did with Tex to the Red Sox…that’d be awkward.

I agreed with this until today
If Pena doesn’t go, which is likely, I think that means that the Cubs want to keep him into the future. Sure, they could trade him and re-sign him next year, but that doesn’t work out often.
Perhaps the deal just wasn’t there for him. If Pittsburgh was only offering what they did for Lee, maybe the Cubs would be better off with a second round draft pick.

What were the Pirates offering...
I would hate to give Pena away for nothing.

Well then you're some kind of unambitious
fool. The Cubs are going nowhere this year, and should be happy to take anything they can get for their players.

no kiddin, some fans people just dont get it.
Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."
That's the thing
Pitt won’t trade any top prospects and its starting to sound like the cubs want something better than a draft pick that they may get if he leaves
They might not even get a draft pick for Pena
He’s supposedly on the cusp of being a Type B, but it’s really close.

They are not going to offer arb. They want fielder.

They could do the handshake deal, and agree for him to decline beforehand
Although I think I heard he wasn’t willing to do that with the Rays last year.
They could have done that 10 times in the last few years. They refuse to do it.

Your not likely to get a top prospect for Pena anyway.
And you can always resign the guy after the season anyway, if the Cubs want him this badly. It simply doesn’t make any sense to hold onto him at this point.

Unless the Pirates offered Locke
or some pitching of similar talent then meh.

if they offer any warm body then do it
he can not be part of the future.

A curious book to read (if accurate)
would be on what Jim Hendry has done all month.
“Mike Minor for Marlon Byrd?”
“Not interested”
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
Oh that's what happened?
They offered Minor for Byrd and he said no? They wouldn’t offer Minor for Beltran, but they’d offer him for Byrd?
Just noticed this
Lee to Pirates? A bunch of twitter stuff so who knows.
There goes one over the fence...a Tru-Link fence.
Yeah, whatever...
.. if the Pirates signed Ronnie Woo-Woo, then offered him to the Cubs for Pena and told the Cubs that Chicago still had to pay all of Pena’s salary, I can see why Hendry would say no. Because that’s likely very similar to what happened here.

Yeah well Ted Frump from the Daily Rag TWEETED that
Hendry turned down McCutchen and Taillon for him. Wouldn’t even hear of it he said. HA!
That might mean
That Ricketts us seriously ok with writing off 3 seasons in a row (10-12) waiting for bad contracts to expire, all the while keeping the guy who inked those contracts in charge.
There is absolutely no chance of this team competing with Pena at first. There just isnt enough opportunity for the dramatic improvement necessary at other positions.
DEJESUS!!!

You, apparently, do not think ANY prospect is worth talking about.
You’ve talked down every single trade for prospects made today. All of them.

Phil Rogers just said
That the Cubs felt they weren’t offered anything for Pena that would be better than the draft pick they’d get for him leaving as a FA. The Cubs wanted pitching and all they were offered was outfielders, which they felt they had enough of in the system.
If true, then the decision not to move Pena makes a little more sense.
Yeah, I can't imagine they would have gotten too much more than the Orioles got for Lee.
This choice doesn’t get me that mad. Byrd, on the other hand, infuriates me.

they expect to contend next year
keeping Byrd is probably the smart choice if they’re going down that road.
Why?
Byrd can still be traded before next season. This wasn’t the only chance with him.
by jerry morales rules on Jul 31, 2011 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions
The fact that he is controllable beyond this year raised his value this year and...
I want to see BJax as the starting CF next year. That doesn’t happen as long as Byrd is around.

And that can still happen
if Byrd is traded before next year. While he may have some marginal value by being able to play these two months, he also would have less teams interested in him. There will be a larger market for him in the off season.
I’d like to see Jackson be the CF next year too, but I don’t think that not trading Byrd now has any bearing on that. I could also see an outfield with Byrd and Jackson next year with Soriano out or no replacement for Fukudome.
