Did the Cubs win the Matt Garza deal?
Chris Archer is struggling this year, Sam Fuld got off to a great start but he isn't doing so well anymore and Robinson Chirinos is probably going to be just a backup catcher. Brandon Guyer and Hak-Ju Lee are hitting well in the minors, but you don't know how they will hit in the Majors. The Cubs got Matt Garza who is a very good pitcher andFernando Perez who could be a good pinch-runner off the bench. They also got Zachary Rosscup. So did the Cubs win the Matt Garza deal?

Trades aren't competitions
You don’t need to “win” to benefit. Wishing failure on the prospects you trade away is silly as it ultimately makes it harder for you to make trades later.

And with little else to talk about, I don’t see why you have such a problem with these.
There’s nothing else to discuss with this team.

Funny timing considering he couldn't get out of the 3rd yesterday
if we are counting this as a “win”
by Madison Cub Fan on Jul 8, 2011 12:27 PM CDT reply actions
The timing on this one is kind of hilarious.
Yesterday Hak-Ju Lee was named the 22nd overall top prospect in MLB by Baseball America, Chris Archer shut out our Tennessee Smokies for 7 innings, and Matt Garza got rung up for 7 runs in 2+ innings.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
The timing is indeed... curious.
The conclusion is still the same: we don’t know who “won”. And as Wreckard noted above, there doesn’t have to be just one winner.

I didn't know.
For everyone who is mad at me for posting this, chill out, it’s not that big of a deal. Geez!
Mike Quade is an idiot.
You'll learn very soon that...
most things are a big deal.
Yep
Just because you have a right to bitch and moan, it doesn’t mean you have post it at every opportunity. If I see a post title that doesn’t coax me into reading further, I move on. I don’t feel the need to trash the poster. People need to chill.
Like someone said, this site needs our postings to exist. Elitist attitudes drive more people away than the occasional cussing.

Not with Al
I was going to have a friend of mine in Vegas make a preseason bet for me that Fuld would make the All Star ballot and get over 900,000 votes, unfortunately the odds were 10,000 -1 and I thought that was way too high so I decided to keep my money. I realize I would have won $100,000 on my usual $10 bet, but I was truly insulted by the odds and decided not to give them my money.

It’s like betting on the Cubs to win the series… just because.

You think Vegas offered a bet on Sam Fuld making the AS ballot and getting 900.000 votes?
Sackman as it happens I do normally bet $10 each every year on the Cubs to win pennant & WS. This year I forgot to get a friend to do it for me. However last year I won about $60 when I got my sister to bet $10 for me on SF to win the WS when she was in Vegas at he start of the post season.

The only person that lost in the Garza trade was...
…wait for it…Matt Garza…he went from a top notch organization to one that’s abysmal.
With the 1st pick in the 2012 Baseball Amateur Draft, the Chicago Cubs select...
Some one on the MLB Network yesterday
said the Red Sox were interested in Matt Garza. Some local Boston reporter. Can’t see why the Cubs would trade him though, especially for anything in the Boston system after the Gonzalez trade.
They still have lots of talent there...
They replenish their system so well through the draft and IL signings, and can buy what they need through free agency anyway. And it’s all hands on deck for the Red Sox to keep the Yankees and Rays from passing them. If the Cubs can get full value for Garza out of them, they should do it in a second. They should only do it if full value is a haul.
I would love to get Reddick and Lars Anderson out of them. I think both of them need a change of scenery, and the Cubs have a pretty wide-open path for both of them to reach their potential in the majors, when it’s going to be hard for them to do so with the Red Sox. Throw in a couple high-ceiling pitchers, and there’s plenty of room to get a deal done there. The Cubs could try to squeeze more out by including Grabow and Byrd in the deal, though that’s probably asking too much.

Yikes...
No way I’m trading Garza for Lars Anderson…. Their farm system has fallen off the face of the earth since the Gonzalez trade and Casey Kelly falling off so badly.
Garza for Anderson and Josh Reddick...
Yuch. I’m so glad we’re all just posters on a blog…so glad.
Since you still need to work on that reading comprehension, even for a blog poster...

Sure, but who?
They can’t trade their top pitching prospect Raunado because he just got drafted, so it’d be tough to find a match. Britton and Pimentel? That’d feel like underselling given how far away either one is.
Ranaudo can be a PTBNL though.

and he’s currently the #1 prospect in a good Padres system, and that was while Rizzo was still considered a prospect.

Personally, pitchers are weird and I like him more than most other pitching prospects.

Yeah they have alot less ammo for Garza...
post-Gonzalez. I’d have started with two of those 3 guys they gave up…It’s a little tougher to do since their system is still recovering from that. It does look surprisingly bare over there, though there’s guys who can draw interest for sure.
This again?
You’re not going to have this answer after half a season. That said, I’m still leaning yes for the time being.
If Garza had thrown seven shut out innings yesterday

Well then I'll chalk it up to poor timing.
There has been a lot of discussion lately on the Garza deal. Welcome to the site. You’ll need thick skin if you hang around.
John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.
Too early to tell. Garz has been good but hasn't gotten a lot of run support
He wasn’t good yesterday but for the most part this season he has been good

Yes.
It’s happened more than you might think. Thanks to bb-ref’s play index, I was able to look this up.
There have been 35 seasons in MLB history where a player has had 30 or more HR, and 15 or fewer doubles.
The fewest was 8, by Mark McGwire in 2000 (32 HR). Then 9, by Dave Kingman (37 HR, 1982).
No Cubs player has ever done this. So there’s that, then.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
Yeah, you would think that by hitting 30 or more homeruns that they would "accidentally" hit at least 10 off the wall for double or something.

by wrigleyrocker12 on Jul 13, 2011 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions
Actually, there have been only 34 such FULL seasons.
Jose Bautista has 31 HR and 15 doubles this year. He’s likely to hit at least one more double, so he’d be off the list. He’s on pace for about 56 HR and 28 doubles.

So...
Basically, the general feeling I’m getting here is;
Sam Fuld ISN’T the next Willie Mays?
Well sir, I simply can’t wrap my head around that breaking news.
Can't we go ahead and officially replace Wayne Messmer with Dwight Smith?

I think
I think we should trade Garza to the Phillies for Sandberg and sell the Cubs to Cuban who will put on a circus clown outfit and be a grinder in the stands.
Nothing happens unless it's first a dream
garza
isnt much of a difference maker this year but look at the team.i would want this guy anytime.
Who cares...
…whether the Cubs won or lost a certain trade?
I don’t think you put up any banners to say you won a trade.

Garza has a 2.86 xFIP and 2.5 WAR.
He’s been our most valuable player according to WAR, unless Rammy has passed him as of late, and would be an All-Star on any team with solid defense and run support.
Chicago Blackhawks 2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Duke Blue Devils 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions
Yep and any stat which says Garza is better this year than Jurrjens
can not be trusted. I think I will still value Jurrjens and his 1.87 ERA over Garza and his 4.26. I am sticking to those old fashioned stats in this case.
