BCB Infiltrated by kids?
Seriously, it is getting just silly around here. I read these fanshots and fanposts and I usually enjoy the discussion that follows, but anymore it is getting embarassing. Are there just too many children posting on this site anymore? Look sometimes people say some ridiculous things, or take a completely irrational stance on baseball and the Cubs, but that is what makes things unique. For all you kids on here bantering back and forth and trying to prove some kind of point, knock it off please! I know it may be a little early for this lesson, but they will teach it to you by the time you reach 5th grade. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I don't think age is really the problem either.
I think the problem is maturity. Alot of people here seem to have a lack of respect for others and seem to have a one sided form of thinking. I try to ignore them – but it gets hard when it seems that it’s becoming the majority.
'Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.'
It's not the majority,
but it seems like it because we’re losing so much.

Thats my thinking.
The team losing is the core of the issue.

But it is embarassing just to read some of it
And most adults I know don’t act that way, and I don’t consider myself old, and I have some relatively immature friends, but they wouldn’t even participate in some of the infantile back and forth bashing that seems to be a regular occurence around here. I wonder if any of these people read their own comments and feel embarassed, because I actually feel embarassed for them.
I mean, it's the Internet.
Just click the little button and go elsewhere.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
Haha, that's the easy answer
but I was kind of hoping that the teens/adults who are at fault here would read this and realize the err of there ways. I am not so bothered by the arguments that I need to avoid reading them, I just find it embarassing as a representation of those who post here, as I cannot relate to such siliness at all. And for all intents and purposes, I think some immaturity in life is a good thing. Some of the stuff I have read lately however goes far beyond that.
Or

I'd hope so...
Keep in mind kindness and respect are and always have been two way streets.
Being agreeable totally depends on what’s being said.
...but if one person purposely throws nails on those streets his intent isn't kindness and respect

See my thinking is that...
the “nails” I throw out tend to be part of the “I’m not agreeable” thing.

There are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. Who says baseball isn't a religion?
I have asked for people to be civil to each other many times.
I just don’t understand why that seems so difficult for some.

Which is why I wonder if the mean age of the BCB population
is dropping. Most adults don’t need to be warned about their behavior, but even those that do typically heed the warnings and change their behavior. It really does seem like there is just a lot of juvenile arguments going on. If you go back and read some of these arguments, it definitely seems like they could be junior high students, in which case it would make a little more sense and also be somewhat of a relief if it really was junior high kids.
You would think that's true
You would think that adults would act responsibly and always think “would I say this to this person’s face?”.
Then you read some posts about politics, crime in Chicago, gun rights, or cilvil unions. And you will quickly see the discussions devolve in name-calling and rumor-mongering. And those posts are very, very likely by adults.

This is so true.
I’m over 30 and at times for shits and giggles I’ll troll the hell out of a tread elsewhere for pure amusement. Before I found this site, you should have seen the stuff I’d do on Cubs.com. lol
I think
rather than have articles about how to post within SN Nation you should do a front page post of how to use the “Cancel” button…
I will say this
There have been 3, maybe 4 people in my history of lurking and posting here that I absolutely could not stand, and shockingly enough, most others couldn’t either. Two of those people are no longer here. I fully understand your call for civility when someone like myself, or someone else, tells someone to shut it in so many words, but your call for civility should be tweaked, or at least be issued far sooner than that, for the person that is instigating things.
By your own request, you want people to not say things here that they wouldn’t say around others, or at least step away if they feel the need to lash out. Ok, fine. Well exactly how does any of that apply to the actual cause of the mess? I mean, why do you think you keep needing to call for people to be civil? It’s not a coincidence. People shouldn’t say things that they wouldn’t say around a group of other fans. Sure, fine. That goes beyond calling someone out. That also counts for someone being a jerk trying to bait someone into a fight. That person also wouldn’t be a part of the “group”.

i have been coming to this website for years, and i follow it everyday still.
During the beginning parts of the season i go into some game threads and ill contribute there. and in the beginning of the season ill contribute a lot in the fanpost/shots.
As a season goes on (especially a season as bad as this one), you see alot of the same dumb things going on. Ultra-pessimism, super-downers, and just plain old annoying people. that is why about a month or 2 into a season, you will see me usually withdraw from a lot of threads. Because I cannot handle the TJ’s of the world, saying the same stuff over and over again, and a lot of the time trolling, trying (and succeeding) to get a rise out of people.
I have to make myself just stay away from most of the discussion when things aren’t going good, because I know that I will end up getting pissed, and say things outside of the guidelines of the website. I wish I had a nickel for everything I have ever typed in response to something that I perceive as idiotic, only to hold the backspace button down until it is gone. Some people need to realize that it is ok to read and not always comment.

To be fair to TJ and others who post repetitive things
I actually find TJ’s posts humourous, even if ridiculously repetitive. It is mostly when a person or group of people attack each other and nitpick their postings to death that it really is embarassing. A little snark here and there, some wit, and some dumb posts are all okay occasionally. But the people who follow each other around bashing at every chance they get just seems over-the-top juvenile to me.
what you find amusing, many others find immature and highly annoying
at least when there is a pointed give and take, even with some snarkiness, there is baseball being discussed usually, unlike the vast majority of TJ’s inane posts. If you worry about immaturity here, TJ is the poster child.

I don't think you are the only one who may feel this way.
But Al is going to delete my fanshot if people get personal, so let’s try not to. My problem is more the bickering back and forth and name calling/bashing, etc. Obscure immature comments aren’t so bad until others have to lash out and say mean things directly to posters. By the way, I just found a fanshot that details a method to completely block certain posters from your veiw so you never even see their posts. This would be the best way to deal with particular posters that you just cannot stand to read.
Awww Bilbo, you make me so sad......
You know what would stop my rantings on the Cubs?
Them actually winning!!!!!!! That would solve it!!!!!
Instead of keeping a team together that sucks like Hendry does wants to do…
Try looking at the real issue….The Cubs organization….
well, i know thats the main problem...
I’m not saying that it isn’t. I’m just saying that I choose not to have salt poured into my wounds by seeing your comments of “Amazing” or “Tom Ricketts approves!” over and over. Or how you rehash your dislike for Soriano, and Rami. I can’t stand to see all the loafing and bad stuff you point out either. I just don’t think that it needs to be commented on 200 times a game/thread/day.
I read Al’s recaps, look at insight on the fanposts, and get most of my cubs news from the fanshots. I look at a few comments for some viewpoints, and the ups and downs of said topic for insight and challenge my baseball IQ and beliefs. I just choose to overlook most comments of yours and a lot of other stuff here because I know I will end up breaking the rules around here.

blasphemy
I personally believe that damaged ligaments and tendons (among other abrasions) aren't the reason for the team playing so poorly relative the rest of Major League Baseball, so accordingly, James Hendry should be relieved of his highly important duties as General Manager of the Chicago Cubs franchise.

I think it is just a couple of people.
They happen to post so much that it seems like a majority. Sadly, I do not think they are children. I also think some of the nonsense is keeping many of the better posters away. It’s been really nice to see many of them come back these last few days. I hope they stay so the conversation starts improving.

I can appreciate your dismay.
However, I don’t believe its a question of age at all.
I do see the random f-bombs in the game threads from names I do not recognize. Maybe they are younger, but then again maybe not. As an old sailor, I don’t mind the f-bomb from time to time, but to each his own.
I’m 38. Based on my own Cubs fan experience compared to what I can read from older posters who talk about times before mine, most of the heated conversations and “attacks” appear to be from folks older than I am.
Maybe by “kids” you were using a metaphor? If not, I submit respectfully that you missed your target.
Yeah, I hope they're not really kids.

Well the intent is to point out how childish some of the behavior has become
And that the only logical thing is that the childish behavior is coming from actual kids. While that probably isn’t the case, it should make those childish posters stop and think if they are indeed the ones behaving like children.
I WISH I was a kid
Sadly I am not. You get to feel pretty old when your team is drafting the kid of a player you used to watch and you were not a kid back then either ( though a lot younger).

But after 11 years would you want to start over? Diapers and all that? No thanks. This really wasn’t so bad. We were carrying all the baby paraphernalia around anyway.

I think that some of the mean-spirited discussions and debates
are a symptom of a few things. Hiding behind a keyboard, snarking and the joy of pushing peoples’ buttons and a real dislike of certain individuals.
I have read so many comments that have had snide or off base replies for no reason, other than to initiate a fight or verbal war over their opinion. Some people enjoy trying to be superior or prove their intellect by having a verbal pissing contest.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pissing contest now and then, but some folks seem to want to start one every time a comment goes against their opinion.
To be fair, sometimes what is so easy to understand in one’s own mind can be very difficult to communicate, and others are quick to tear it apart before the gist of the argument has been fully understood.
The last couple of years has been very hard on all Cub fans and when the Cubs play poorly on top of losing, the wrath of the fan gets unleashed and things can get ugly. Some of the losing post game threads are really vile.
I have spirited debates and pissing contests with my friends face to face and with other people that mock the teams I support, or disagree with my opinion, and that’s ok. The one thing that is different is that we rarely, if ever, call each other names. That’s one thing I hate about the internet when it comes to general opinion-based discussions. It’s easy to spit out epithets when you’re a thousand miles away.
I have never called anyone on this site a name, and never intend to. None of us are morons or idiots, we are fans that from time to time disagree and will fight to the death sometimes defending our view. That’s cool. The name-calling is not cool, IMHO.
And TJ, I never tire of your comments, I sometimes troll the threads and get a good laugh at some of the comments regarding your exclamations. This is no disrespect to anyone that is tired of TJ’s sense of humor, but it reminds me of my wife and how she gets upset at one of my best friends who complains about everything. She can’t understand how I can stay friends with him, and I say, “that’s NAME REDACTED. That’s how he is. Once you get past that, it’s a non-issue.”
TJ is TJ. And that’s ok by me lol
