Per Gordon Wittenmyer on twitter Z walked out of the clubhouse after getting ejected and told a team trainer that he was retiring.

So much for Changed-Z...

Possible that even if Z is serious about retirement the MLBPA could pressure Z to not retire and force the Cubs to pay him his salary next year. I think Z would simply raise a middle finger to the MLBPA.

Supposedly Q is upset, but either way I dont see how Z will be on the team come Opening Day, regardless of what else happens in the next few days.

ESPN is hot on the story here...

this franchise is a total and utter disgrace, put the team up for sale Ricketts. Clueless.

Hendry hired Quade

Quade does not have a hold on one of his starting pitchers. In this case Z. Who can contain Z?? I do not know but you asked.

My point was......

…. Hendry was apparently trying to unload Zambrano on at least the Yankees but they wouldn’t bite. He’s untradeable with that contract and emotional make up. The only way the Cubs rid themselves of the contract is to take him up on his bluff to retire and send him the paperwork.

Plus, I don’t think Leo Durocher could handle this guy. I can’t blame Quade for not controlling him. No one ever has.

Cannot argue with what you are saying here

We have all followed Z for a long time now – his emotions are out of control – again – I have seen the pattern a few times and until it strays from that….Im sure we will see him for his next start.

I blame...

…Hendry as much as anyone for tolerating Zambrano’s behavior as long as the organization did.

Once Z gets a hold of himself and he talks to his agent, you can forget about retiring and leaving all the dough on the table, it won’t happen. What you do have though, is a situation where the Cubs may have to unload him.

Now, you could have two guys (Soriano and Zambrano) you may have to deal and eat a whole bunch of money just to move them.

It's not really Z's fault that he's overpaid.

The fact that Worf is unpaid is no excuse for his lack of quality. We’re all indirectly both paid and paying to be here, by viewing ads and generating content for others to read and enjoy…. and view more ads.

Z “hasn’t done enough”? Fine, whatever – but he’s done more than almost any other Cubs pitcher in the history of the ballclub. He’s been outstanding, a blast to watch, and just plain good at baseball. Could he be better without the outbursts? Probably. But it’s equally possible the fire that’s burned him out is the same one that got him here. And frankly, I think the outbursts are entertaining.

what does Al do?

He reports on what happens with the Cubs. How does he do that? He reports on a blog. Not sure I see the difference except that Paul is employed by an “Old” Media outlet that is trying to do what Al has been doing for 10 years…being online.

has turned into a job. Good for Al. But the separation that once existed has changed with the economic dependence on access to Cub things. That’s reality. Al can’t call out people in the organizatin with the same intensity people on BCB can do. OTOH, he can et an interview with Ricketts and others in the system whereas we don’t have that access. Hendry

In Sullivan’s article, Hendry quoted as saying the Cubs would honor Zambrano’s wishes and move forward. Too much damage control would be needed to keep him around through till the end of his contract.

Didn’t like Quade’s response, but haven’t figured-out exactly what I didn’t like. Understandably, he would be miffed and caught off-guard.

This is just fine. You’re a shell of the pitcher you used to be and you’re new-and-improved act turned out to be just that — an act. And retiring now might be the greatest gift you could ever give the Chicago Cubs.

With another $18 million off the books this offseason, the Cubs MIGHT actually be able to buy enough to contend in 2012. Certainly, they can get more for $18 million than a No. 3-4 starter who’s more combustible than an IAD.

Maybe this team is on the juice.....

I’m not saying they are or aren’t on some kind of steroids, but with Z’s Roid Rage and Starlin Castro all of a sudden hitting home runs on a semi-regular basis, maybe Quade has been slipping “enhancements” into the team Gatorade.

(For those who aren’t fluent in sarcasm, I am completely kidding, at least about Starlin, and I am just trying to bring some humor to the situation).

He has a 2.5 WAR and a 3.79 FIP on the season. He’s not striking guys out, but he doesn’t give up many walks or HRs. His BABIP is on the high side at 3.05, meaning he’s had some bad luck. That’s the sort of guy who could be a bargain, eat innings, and be a reasonably good #4/#5.

Hiroki Kuroda would also be nice.

by Outshined_One on Aug 12, 2011 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I honestly don't see Cashner starting the season in the majors next season

Unless he’s in relief. He hasn’t thrown a pitch since his injury. If the Cubs have any notion of keeping him at starter, they’d be wise to start his season in the minors next season so that they can monitor his pitch counts and keep a close eye on his mechanics. If he’s healthy and dealing come summer, the Cubs can always make a trade (either with him in it or someone else getting shipped out).

As for Wells, under this scenario with Z out and Wilson & Francis coming in, I’m assuming he’d be the 4th/5th starter. A rotation of Wilson/Garza/Dempster/Francis/Wells could actually be pretty good.

But ask anyone who was in their 20s and spent time downtown in the evening in the 90s about off field actions of a few players and seeing them out at 3 am and unable to play the next day. Not only Cubs either.

They were all media darlings. If Z or another media hated player did this kind of thing it would be all over the paper.

This was not off field behavior...

the clubhouse is still where he does work. He made plenty of mistakes on the mound tonight, but his biggest mistake is what happened when he left it and shirked his obligations to his employer and his teammates, to which he is imminently accountable.

But that behavior could have affected their play on the field or whether theyplayed the next day.

I was not surprised more than once to see a partier get scratched the next day. Someone who was fine to have fun downtown at 3 am but unable to play at 120.

I don't care about what players do when they go out...

can’t understand why you think I do. I care about what they do on the field and in the clubhouse and when representing the Chicago Cubs and Major League Baseball. Everything Zambrano is “accused of” tonight falls under that. I couldn’t begin to tell you how little I care about Zambrano is doing at this very moment.

IF they go out and party and their play is unaffected it’s fine.

Don’t care about partying if it doesn’t affect their play on the field.

Most people party on Friday and Saturday nights because they don’t work the next day.

I’d expect Cubs’ reaction to Zambrano “retirement” will be same as Alderson’s to umps threatening to quit in 1999: “This is either a threat to be ignored, or an offer to be accepted”

I'm a pretty decent human being...unfortunately by Carlos Zambrano's

…actions on the field I can’t say the same thing. He intentionally began throwing at players tonight because they hit home runs off of him, what does that say about him. I am celebrating the possibility that this headcase is no longer a Cub.

You really come off as sanctimonious with making yourself the arbiter of what is decent.

The headcase threw at Chipper twice and since the "thrower"

and yes I call him that because he’s obviously never put the time in to become a pitcher, doesn’t always know where the ball is going he very easily could have ended Jones’s career. You think that’s good sound baseball? Then exactly when did you start watching or did you here all those good ol’ stories about Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale. What Z was tonight was out of control and I’ll be glad when he’s gone because he has never done anything to deserve our sympathy.

anyone care to wager ...

Ill bet one " pearl " he will pitch again for the Cubs this year . If not his next start .
limit 10 :)

I just don’t think after all Z has done over the years that THIS will be the end .

And what exactly did he do this time ? Left early ? Happens a lot … position players and pitchers will leave the park after they have been removed from the game . ( I watched a few of them drive by this past homestand .) Talked of retiring ? after having a bad .. ok very bad , game . Obviously I’m not in the locker room, but I/m guessing this also has been mentioned by players to teammates/reporters many times before after a bad game… off the record I’m sure .

Didn’t help he got ejected tonight … lol . THAT is the story . Not that he left early saying he is thinking of retiring .

Given Zambrano’s history , I understand why fans want him gone . I just don’t think this is the big story it is being made to be. ( and who exactly leaked this story ? ) Cubs sure seem to be very quick to talk about it … kind of reminds me of what happened when Sammy left .

I said:

I always like watching him pitch and hit when things were going well

He was a career 124 ERA+ pitcher over 1800 IP, I’m perfectly happy with that

You ended with...
He was fun to watch at least

I understand this had more “entertainment value” to some than a James Russell start (especially in a moribund season), but I don’t call what he did tonight fun… and I wouldn’t have cared whether the team came back to win tonight in spite of his actions and performance… still didn’t make his role fun to watch. These incidents, on the mound and off, happened to frequently for me to be pleased by what happened in between.

I care far less about his antics than most people do. What he does to teammates, or water coolers, or whatever, I don’t really care. I don’t feel victimized or ashamed or angry about the stuff he’s done. Just like I really didn’t care about Milton Bradley’s actions when we was a Cub.

Z preformed better over his career than any Cub starter of my lifetime. That’s really all I care about. And yes, when he preformed well, he was loads of fun to watch.

Well, that's a shame...

that the standard’s been set so low.

the standard for performance or the standard of behavior that leads to my apathy?

by Donbedouin on Aug 13, 2011 2:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not judging your apathy.

I don’t know you. I’m tired of people here judging people they don’t know based on exposure to small %s of their lives.

when I read that I didn’t think you were judging me

by Donbedouin on Aug 13, 2011 2:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I didn't say you were...

You were asking me to assess it… which might have been a better choice of words, but the same comment applies.

More fun than any of James Russell's starts

Let's start a lawsuit

ACCORDING TO Jamesiscrockett WE ARE VICTIMS!

Let’s start a class action lawsuit.

Of course I’m sure Mr. Crockett did not claim to be a victim of Ryan Dempster on opening day…

Hee hee

And is anyone else lacking so much perspective that they consider themselves a victim of Zambrano?

I don’t think any of us are named Derrek Lee or Michael Barrett.

You also

You also don’t care when a players off field behavior affects their on field play.

I never said I didn't...

I said it didn’t have anything to do with Zambrano.

Well, now it's time for me to retire.

I, like Zambrano, will be back to the normal routine tomorrow.

Wow.

You guys had yourselves one really rough day. A Big Z meltdown usually makes for interesting reading, I’ll say that much.

I'm afraid to use the "Z" key to page through comments now.

Looks like I’ll have to use the “C” and “X” keys.

Good Lord. It's like

It’s got enough vitriol in it to last us through 2012.

Use the front-page post for further comments. And please, take a deep breath and stop with the personal attacks on other BCB posters. I am freaking sick of that.
