Hissyfitgate 2011 - Z Walks Out On Team - Says He Is Retiring
Per Gordon Wittenmyer on twitter Z walked out of the clubhouse after getting ejected and told a team trainer that he was retiring.
So much for Changed-Z...
Possible that even if Z is serious about retirement the MLBPA could pressure Z to not retire and force the Cubs to pay him his salary next year. I think Z would simply raise a middle finger to the MLBPA.
Supposedly Q is upset, but either way I dont see how Z will be on the team come Opening Day, regardless of what else happens in the next few days.
ESPN is hot on the story here...
Uh-Oh - Paul Sullivan is:
Searching downtown ATL for Big Z to talk some sense into him. Wish me luck.

Hendry needs to resign now
this franchise is a total and utter disgrace, put the team up for sale Ricketts. Clueless.
this crap is why I want Brian Cashman
how many Yankees do you see do this shit?
I dont care that he has the biggest payroll in the world to work with, at the end of the day the Yankees are a world class organization with one of the best farm systems in the majors not because they have won 27 World Series but because when you play baseball for them its all business, no bullshit.
I have defended Z and hoped that he was a changed man, I have wanted Pujols and Fielder and Cliff Lee and god knows how many other big time free agents but this kind of monkey ass shit needs to stop all the way from player tirades and a manager that doesnt know his head from a hole in the ground to the players not being able to act like a GODDAMN team and stand together for the freekin national anthem. I am looking at you Cubs front office, RICKETTS FIX THIS CRAP

Hendry hired Quade
Quade does not have a hold on one of his starting pitchers. In this case Z. Who can contain Z?? I do not know but you asked.

My point was......
…. Hendry was apparently trying to unload Zambrano on at least the Yankees but they wouldn’t bite. He’s untradeable with that contract and emotional make up. The only way the Cubs rid themselves of the contract is to take him up on his bluff to retire and send him the paperwork.
Plus, I don’t think Leo Durocher could handle this guy. I can’t blame Quade for not controlling him. No one ever has.

Cannot argue with what you are saying here
We have all followed Z for a long time now – his emotions are out of control – again – I have seen the pattern a few times and until it strays from that….Im sure we will see him for his next start.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Cubs win....what a lucky break!!" ---Harry
I blame...
…Hendry as much as anyone for tolerating Zambrano’s behavior as long as the organization did.
Once Z gets a hold of himself and he talks to his agent, you can forget about retiring and leaving all the dough on the table, it won’t happen. What you do have though, is a situation where the Cubs may have to unload him.
Now, you could have two guys (Soriano and Zambrano) you may have to deal and eat a whole bunch of money just to move them.

Fuck you, you gloating blowhard.
Z has done far more to entertain me in any given start than you’ve ever done with the awful drivel you post here.
He’s one of the best pitchers in Cubs history. He’s got a passion for the game that most of the players on this team could use some of. On any given day, he may not go out and give you ace stuff anymore but he’s still a blast to watch on both sides of the ball.
You come in here and make this thread about you? My god, get over yourself.

One of them gets paid a lot to "entertain"...

Unfortunately, I don’t get paid a damn bit to waste time analyzing any bit of the drivel you regularly post, much less you as a person. But you can continue doing all of that to everyone as you so often see fit.

It's not really Z's fault that he's overpaid.
The fact that Worf is unpaid is no excuse for his lack of quality. We’re all indirectly both paid and paying to be here, by viewing ads and generating content for others to read and enjoy…. and view more ads.
Z “hasn’t done enough”? Fine, whatever – but he’s done more than almost any other Cubs pitcher in the history of the ballclub. He’s been outstanding, a blast to watch, and just plain good at baseball. Could he be better without the outbursts? Probably. But it’s equally possible the fire that’s burned him out is the same one that got him here. And frankly, I think the outbursts are entertaining.
Good for you.
I’m not paying a dime to be here… and I damn well wouldn’t if I had to… and I’m sure not paid a dime to be here and don’t care how you personally assess that. It’s not a factor to me.

WE NOW HAVE CONFIRMATION THAT THE CUBS PLAY BASEBALL
per the ESPN twitter account:
After a poor outing against the Braves, Cubs’ pitcher Carlos Zambrano is said to be mulling retirement
What the Cubs should do....
…. suspend him for the rest of the year, then follow whatever protocol is necessary to void his contract if he really doesn’t retire. NO TEAM is going to take this guy in a trade.
Then there’s reality. Let’s hope it’s what I wrote.

What was first a hobby
has turned into a job. Good for Al. But the separation that once existed has changed with the economic dependence on access to Cub things. That’s reality. Al can’t call out people in the organizatin with the same intensity people on BCB can do. OTOH, he can et an interview with Ricketts and others in the system whereas we don’t have that access. Plus our tickets aren’t deductible.

Hendry
In Sullivan’s article, Hendry quoted as saying the Cubs would honor Zambrano’s wishes and move forward. Too much damage control would be needed to keep him around through till the end of his contract.
Didn’t like Quade’s response, but haven’t figured-out exactly what I didn’t like. Understandably, he would be miffed and caught off-guard.
What, we're supposed to believe Hendry would stop him from retiring?

You know what, Z?
This is just fine. You’re a shell of the pitcher you used to be and you’re new-and-improved act turned out to be just that — an act. And retiring now might be the greatest gift you could ever give the Chicago Cubs.
With another $18 million off the books this offseason, the Cubs MIGHT actually be able to buy enough to contend in 2012. Certainly, they can get more for $18 million than a No. 3-4 starter who’s more combustible than an IAD.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

I’m not saying they are or aren’t on some kind of steroids, but with Z’s Roid Rage and Starlin Castro all of a sudden hitting home runs on a semi-regular basis, maybe Quade has been slipping “enhancements” into the team Gatorade.

If it wasn't for the injuries, we'd be printing WS tickets right now.
Yes
He has a 2.5 WAR and a 3.79 FIP on the season. He’s not striking guys out, but he doesn’t give up many walks or HRs. His BABIP is on the high side at 3.05, meaning he’s had some bad luck. That’s the sort of guy who could be a bargain, eat innings, and be a reasonably good #4/#5.
Hiroki Kuroda would also be nice.

I honestly don't see Cashner starting the season in the majors next season
Unless he’s in relief. He hasn’t thrown a pitch since his injury. If the Cubs have any notion of keeping him at starter, they’d be wise to start his season in the minors next season so that they can monitor his pitch counts and keep a close eye on his mechanics. If he’s healthy and dealing come summer, the Cubs can always make a trade (either with him in it or someone else getting shipped out).
As for Wells, under this scenario with Z out and Wilson & Francis coming in, I’m assuming he’d be the 4th/5th starter. A rotation of Wilson/Garza/Dempster/Francis/Wells could actually be pretty good.
by Outshined_One on Aug 12, 2011 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

But with one of the fixtures of the rotation leaving, pretty much everything about the rotation in 2012 is speculation at this point.

then you have to assume “a lot of stuff” about him already gets covered up. It works both ways. If you blow up on the field, you don’t take off while your team is out trying to work off your mistakes. You look your teammates in the eyes as they walk off the field. Does infighting occur on other teams? Sure but the things that have happened with this organization over the last 7 or 8 years is a joke and most of this crap doesn’t happen with other teams. Truthfully this organization does not have control of its players and there is no discipline.

I'm a pretty decent human being...unfortunately by Carlos Zambrano's
…actions on the field I can’t say the same thing. He intentionally began throwing at players tonight because they hit home runs off of him, what does that say about him. I am celebrating the possibility that this headcase is no longer a Cub.
You really come off as sanctimonious with making yourself the arbiter of what is decent.

So every player who throws at a batter after a homerun is a bad guy?
Guess a big percentage of pitchers are bad guys then!

Usually a pitcher throws at a player for retaliation for what the other team did against one of his players.
Z threw at 2 players just because they hit HR’s off him and nothing more.
This too.

The headcase threw at Chipper twice and since the "thrower"
and yes I call him that because he’s obviously never put the time in to become a pitcher, doesn’t always know where the ball is going he very easily could have ended Jones’s career. You think that’s good sound baseball? Then exactly when did you start watching or did you here all those good ol’ stories about Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale. What Z was tonight was out of control and I’ll be glad when he’s gone because he has never done anything to deserve our sympathy.

They're a bad guy in that moment...
how they choose to handle that afterward is up to them. Zambrano did the gutless thing and cleaned out his locker before the end of a game instead of facing his teammates, who he embarrassed, and the media.

was hoping he had his act together. And if he regrets this for the rest of his life that would suck. I know what it is like to let emotions take over and to say things you can’t tale back that you regret. But I did it once and learned from it. He hasn’t learned. Still I do feel sorry for Z. anyone care to wager ...
Ill bet one " pearl " he will pitch again for the Cubs this year . If not his next start .
limit 10 :)
I just don’t think after all Z has done over the years that THIS will be the end .
And what exactly did he do this time ? Left early ? Happens a lot … position players and pitchers will leave the park after they have been removed from the game . ( I watched a few of them drive by this past homestand .) Talked of retiring ? after having a bad .. ok very bad , game . Obviously I’m not in the locker room, but I/m guessing this also has been mentioned by players to teammates/reporters many times before after a bad game… off the record I’m sure .
Didn’t help he got ejected tonight … lol . THAT is the story . Not that he left early saying he is thinking of retiring .
Given Zambrano’s history , I understand why fans want him gone . I just don’t think this is the big story it is being made to be. ( and who exactly leaked this story ? ) Cubs sure seem to be very quick to talk about it … kind of reminds me of what happened when Sammy left .

The other sick thing
The other sick thing is there were people openly rooting for Z to not come back well after he went into treatment.
No Cubs fan was doing that. Because him playing well helps the team or makes him more tradable.
And remember we only have the medias word the Cubs were openly shopping him. The media wouldn’t know a true story if it danced the hokey pokey naked in front of them.
Have we heard from Bruce Miles yet the only even handed reporter in this city?
When I first saw the texts when I turned on my phone on the train on the way home from going out with my fiends I thought it was probably another media blown out of proportion event.
And as far as him saying I’m retiring. If every player who ever said that made it official probably about 30 players would be retired early every season. HEck if every time one of us said in frustration I quit we’d all change jobs at least once a year.
