Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves Preview, Saturday 8/13, 6:10 CT: Moving On
Per Paul Sullivan, Carlos Zambrano is on the disqualified list:
Cubs place Z on disqualified list. 30 days w/o pay. Can't be w/ team
There isn't a whole lot more I can say about Z that hasn't already been said by me and others, both here at BCB and elsewhere. However, 30 days gets us to within two weeks of the end of this season -- thus, I doubt that he will pitch for the Cubs again this year. As of early this afternoon the Cubs were in discussions with Z's agent:
General manager Jim Hendry was unavailable for comment. Zambrano's agent, Barry Praver, did not return phone calls. Sources said the two have been in discussions, and that Zambrano has not filed any retirement papers.
If nothing is resolved by this afternoon, the Cubs are likely to place Zambrano on the restricted list indefinitely, as they did last year when Zambrano was sent to anger management counseling following his dugout incident with Derrek Lee on June 25, 2010 at U.S. Cellular Field.
I will, however, reiterate something I wrote earlier today: that is, that the Ricketts family has to make major changes in the way the baseball operation of this team is run. Whether that's in personnel, or procedures, or both, is up to them. But it simply cannot be run in this dysfunctional manner any more. I wrote "blow it up" a couple of weeks ago; that can be interpreted in a number of ways, but change must come. It's time. This dysfunction goes far beyond Carlos Zambrano.
In the meantime, there are still 43 games remaining on the schedule. One of them is tonight.
Cubs lineup:
Castro SS, Barney 2B, Ramirez 3B, Pena 1B, Byrd CF, Soriano LF, Colvin RF, Soto C, Wells P
Braves lineup:
Bourn cf, Prado lf, Freeman 1b, Uggla 2b, Jones 3b, Gonzalez ss, Ross c, Constanza rf, Lowe p

Randy Wells faced the Braves twice last year. He threw really well in one of the games. And not so much in the other one. Overall, current Braves are hitting .254 (15-for-59) against him with two home runs (one each from Jason Heyward and Alex Gonzalez).
Derek Lowe last pitched against the Cubs on June 3, 2009. He gave them just two runs in seven innings, but the Cubs won anyway. You remember when the Cubs used to do that, right? (Boxscore for amusement value only.)
Today's game is on WGN and FSN South. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

WTH happened last night? I just fired up yesterdays archive of the game.
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
z started throwing pitches at everything that moved
got ejected, soriano apparently yelled at him in the dugout, z emptied his locker and said he wants to retire
I personally believe that damaged ligaments and tendons (among other abrasions) aren't the reason for the team playing so poorly relative the rest of Major League Baseball, so accordingly, James Hendry should be relieved of his highly important duties as General Manager of the Chicago Cubs franchise.

Oh wow...
I didn’t know that..thank you for sharing it.
And Soriano was quoted
in one of the papers saying that Z was a big man, but had problems.
"It is history that teaches us to hope" -- R. E. Lee
But Lee wasn't a Cubs fan.
I got money on Z in a fight
Everything I own. Sori couldn’t even run – Z would catch him

This actually makes me respect Soriano a bit more

Do you mean this?
“He’s been doing a lot of things, not once or twice. Gotta think a little bit more,” Alfonso Soriano said on Saturday. “Big man, but mentally he’s weak.”
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
This has got to be the last straw.
It is a tragedy to see such a talented young man blow things so throughly. He needs help and I hope he gets it, but his days as Cub player are surely over.
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
Hello eths
I certainly hope you’re right. Enough Zambrano drama. If he was a perrenial 16-18 gm winner…maybe I’d put up with more, but he’s not, and I do not.

Agree with Al...
something has to be done, in my opinion, a new GM, manager, and coaching staff is a start. This dog and pony show must end sooner than later or Wrigley will be empty next year and the diehard Cub’s fans will begin to leave.
they wouldn't be very die hard then would they?

Eventually enough is enough
I have been a diehard fan for over 23 years and I have to be honest, these are trying times for the die hard fans to endure. I am not speaking for Al, but you can tell in his posts that he is fed up.
Think how frustrated we are watching this team.
Now imagine having to write about them every night. Exhausting. I’ll bet Al won’t leave them though. Being frustrated is one thing but die hard fans won’t leave. They can complain their faces off but not leave.
#10 You will be missed.
by Bricks and Ivy on Aug 13, 2011 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh I agree...
it has to be exhausting for Al, day in and day out to write about it. I wouldn’t be so sure about that with the die hard fans not leaving, case in point, look at the Oakland Raiders with the owner Al Davis. That organization as a whole lost numerous diehard fans because of him.
Personally, I could never pull for another team but I could see a large mass leaving if nothing changes in the next year or two.
I am not really fed up
but I hope a lot of changes are made this off season. But I will still watch all the games and follow as much Cubs news as possible.

This is all quite silly
On MOST teams Zambrano would be admired for having fire and the fact that he is willing to take responsibility for a bad game. But with the Cubs he’s viewed as a “problem” because he hurts their image as “lovable” even if they are losers. The team doesn’t need to suspend Zambrano, they need to go out and try to get other players as passionate as Zambrano. And they need to get rid of the General Manager.
This Cubs Management team couldn’t empty water out of a boot with instructions written on the boot.

No one would ever admire that. Even his own teammates were not willing to fight for him.
Not trying to start an argument with you in any way,
but in all earnestness, when did Chipper Jones become one of the most respected players in the game? I’ve seen a lot of posts stating that since last night; do they mean he’s respected by the players, the fans, or both? Cause I know of entire segments of MLB fans who do not like him at all last I checked.

The Braves. Refreshing to see how a good organization is run. Everyone seems to know their roles. Here’s hoping Rickett’s finds the golden path!
They should see

Tom Ricketts should go pay a visit to Rocky Wirtz
Because that is EXACTLY what happened starting almost 4 years ago.
Anyone else here who is a Blackhawks fan too knows exactly what and who I’m talking about formerly of their organization.
There are some strikingly similar (and scary) similarities between the 2005-07 Blackhawks and 2009-11 Cubs.
Just win the next game...!
Yes I do
The job that Rocky did to quickly right a ship that was, in its own way, almost as dysfunctional as the Cubs, should be an example to ANY new owner-not just Ricketts.
First thing he did: hire a new president and give him “God-like powers” to remove the bad elements in the front office. How’d that finally work out? Anybody remember?!!
by bluekoolaide on Aug 13, 2011 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions
First step was realized June 9, 2010 a night I'll never forget
Then with solid scouting (the Cubs do have that going for them), a hockey-god advisor in Scotty and a great coaching staff, they’re poised to be a threat for years to come.
Tom Ricketts: I BEG YOU TO GO SEE ROCKY WIRTZ !!! PLEASE, FOR THE SANITY OF 20,000,000 CUBS FANS….!!
Just win the next game...!
But Mr. Ricketts already confirmed
his philosophy isn’t to have a baseball guy looking over his baseball guy. Assistants cost money and cause disharmony.
If it wasn't for the injuries, we'd be printing WS tickets right now.
Except the Hawks had finally made some good picks in the draft and had several young
players producing and ready to produce before Rocky took over.
But without the right guys to NURTURE that talent...
…it wasn’t going to happen. Don’t underestimate the job that Q (and Bowman, etc.) did in moulding the young guys. Patrick Kane, in particular, picked up his game several notches under their guidance.
by bluekoolaide on Aug 13, 2011 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions
several decisions came after Rocky took over too
Too numerous to mention here.
But your point is made. The problem with the Cubs is they have no system. No system for the players. If what Sam Feld a few months ago is true its an indictment on the entire organization.
Just win the next game...!
I have thought
of this so many times. The Cubs need to follow the what the Blackhawks did. Clean house from the top down.
I want the Cubs to be contenders every friggin year!

I fear that the Cubs might have handled this improperly, from a legal point of view
I am not a lawyer, or familiar with labor laws, so please dont beat me up if you disagree with this. Obviously the Cubs dont want to pay Z $3 million during his time on the restricted list, and ideally would like to get out of the contract completely. However, I’m not sure that his actions on Friday night were outrageous enough to justify that. Yes, he acted like a buffoon once again. But I think that the Cubs should have waited to see if Z showed up at the park today. If he didn’t, and was AWOL, then they would have a much stronger case for suspending him without pay and trying to terminate the contract. As is, I don’t think Friday’s actions warrant not paying Z.
Theres prolly stuff in his contract that says what he cant do.
Besides, im sure the Cubs have a small army of lawyers who sign off on stuff like this and they prolly talked with mlb first too and they prolly said ok. Im not a lawyer either so im sure a certain poster here who loves telling us hes a lawyer will correct mr in no time. lol
Not only that but they've probably planned ahead
I’d be flabbergasted if the team’s lawyers had not already planned what to do with Z in case of a meltdown after last year’s anger management “process.”

3 straight years...
Of sending guys home, suspending or putting on DQ list: Bradley, Z, Z….has this ever happened before?? I highly doubt it. Some team will buy low on Z in off-season with Cubs picking up most of tab.I don’t think they’ll eat Sori contract too as he’s supposedly good "team’’ guy.
The hilarious and sad part...
…is that Ricketts sees all of this and still just sits on his hands.

What exactly did you want him to do today
The team suspended Z with all due speed given that they probably had to notify the players union via the team’s player rep. Ricketts isn’t going to say anything publicly to jeopardize the 30-day suspension or make it look like some sort of planned exit strategy, and he’s not going to rip Hendry publicly for giving Z that stupid contract.

I happen to think they were ready to win even if Bill Wirtz hadn’t died. Only difference would be no home TV cov’g.
No way were they going to win with the old regime in place

LOL
I can see Tommy reading this thread and thinking “Damn…that would’ve been great. They all would’ve LOVED me if I’d done something like that.”

A month from now, Z will apologize....
…..stating “he let his teammates down” and it won’t happen again. He’ll make a couple more starts before the end of the season.
Because that’s what the Cubs do. Or should I say that’s what they allow Z to do. Every time. Why should this time be any different?

Can't argue with your take...unfortunately

I'd think 99% of us would like a different outcome at this point of the Z drama...
..and if management does release/trade him I’ll be shocked, but I’m not confident enough in ownership at this point that they’ll do “the right thing”.

Cubs To Retain GM Jim Hendry
From mlbtraderumors:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com
For what it’s worth.
How would Nightengale know this?
Does he have a relationship with Ricketts? Nothing is written as to why he thinks that. I even went out to his Twitter feed but there was nothing else there either.
I don’t know if this is his speculation or if he has actual info.
by jerry morales rules on Aug 13, 2011 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions
He has the info from Als source who must remain nameless.
If it wasn't for the injuries, we'd be printing WS tickets right now.
i...i...
i dont.. i…
I personally believe that damaged ligaments and tendons (among other abrasions) aren't the reason for the team playing so poorly relative the rest of Major League Baseball, so accordingly, James Hendry should be relieved of his highly important duties as General Manager of the Chicago Cubs franchise.

Now we just need the announcement
that they are bringing back Miles and Theriot and the Trifecta of stupid is in full swing
Fire Jim Hendry... out of a cannon...
I would rather have Miles, Theriot and Z than Hendry and Quade

Not remotely surprsing to me
Has Tommy ever given ANY indication that he’d do anything but stay the course.
Plus he’s too cheap to pay two GM salaries at once.
why did Quade say Rodre

If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
And this, my friends, is just the beginning
Get ready for year 2 of Mike Quade…and for those of you who actually believe they’re going after Pujols or Fielder, let me introduce you to Brian LeHair.

theyd rather have nasty comments all over than lose head and soulders money.
I love the head but not into shoulders
Just saw the ad for the new show "Ringer" and I have to say that...
…Sarah Michelle Gellar makes me think about things that are in no way related to the Cubs. I should send her a Thank You or something.
Man...now I'm going to picture little C's every time I see her
Thanks for spoiling THAT fantasy!

we
all know big z wont retire so now what?we all know that the cubs will most likely not take him back. so now what? it’does’nt seem right that we should have to pay him 23 mill to go away. dont pay him. put him in the stands selling popcorn or cotton candy. make him work on the ground crew. but dont pay him 23 mill for being an asshole.and he will find a team next year most likely the white sox. who else would take a chance on z besides ozzie.
