Maine is expected in Houston today to give the Cubs an extra bullpen arm; he's expected to be returned to Iowa on Wednesday when the Cubs recall Casey Coleman to start.

Remember the Maine!!!

As a bit of an aside… the Cubs have to lead the league in facial hair, right?

Reed, Demp, Garza, Geo, et al… and now add Maine!

I doubt this move has anything to do with Grabow

I’m quite sure the Cubs are/have been looking to move Grabow. But who’d want him? He doesn’t really add anything to a playoff contender other than dead weight in the pen.

Basically, the team needed a 25th player, and figured they’d get a reliever for the two days until Coleman will start (no point in calling up Coleman and wasting a roster spot for two days).

by SouthernCub on Aug 15, 2011 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I realize the move has obvious opportunity uses to add another reliever

but one can hope…

Agreed

it would be nice. although, I guess he’ll be gone in a couple of months either way. so at least we have that to look forward to this offseason.

I just heard the Cubs put Soriano on waivers and willing to pay a big portion of contract.....

what does that mean?

by cooliogirl47 on Aug 15, 2011 11:05 AM CDT reply actions

Here's what it means.

He cleared waivers. That means he can be traded to anyone. If the Cubs eat most of the deal, someone — likely an AL team — might take him, since he could probably be a decent DH.

The important thing to know is what happens when a player DOES NOT clear waivers

When a player does not clear waivers (another team puts in a claim for the player), the current team has 3 choices:

1. Pull the player off of waivers.

2. Work to trade the player to the team that claimed him.

3. Let the team who claimed the player have him – and they pick up the player’s existing contract.

by RiskyBusiness on Aug 15, 2011 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Right... it's actually too bad nobody claimed Soriano or Zambrano...

although there was basically a zero percent chance that anyone would (because as you said: if they did, they’d be on the hook for the contract).

The fact that they did clear waivers really isn’t big news.

Why are you going crazy with the pictures?

It’s kind of annoying to have to scroll through them. It’s one thing if what you’re saying needs a picture, but these are kind of pointless.

That's still one more step (per post) than I should have to do

for something that could have been accomplished by just saying:

“Christmas in August”
and
“Trade Soriano for Ryan Howard and cash”

Just trying to save myself future work here with regard to unnecessary picture posts. :)

Based on what?

The front office needed the money Gorzo would have been paid to get Pena/Wood/Garza. I’ve never seen anything to indicate they didn’t like him.

I believe it was strictly financial reasons..

in hindsight, it sounded like a good idea, take the money and use it for Pena/Wood/Garza but then well, we all know what happened…

by bazfan1234 on Aug 15, 2011 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I thought it was a combination of financial and logistical reasons

in that we needed some financial flexibility AND we seemed committed to Dempster/Zambrano/Garza/Wells/Cashner in the rotation rather than a “we don’t like Gorzellany” thing. I could be wrong there, but that’s how I saw it.

by SouthernCub on Aug 15, 2011 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe timh815 may be referring to

the Silva incident were he said he was not going to go to the pen, that he would only be a starter.

by bazfan1234 on Aug 15, 2011 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

That's not the way I read tim's comments

Since it seemed like the Cubs wanted to put Silva in the bullpen either way, I’m not sure how that would have affected their decision on Gorzellany.

I thought he was saying that the Cubs didn’t care for Gorzellany and that he “had to go,” irrespective of Silva.

Tim, I apologize if I’ve misinterpreted your posts.

Bobby Knight is a smart and funny guy

He also really valued education and did provide great life training for (most of) his players. It’s too bad he had some of his own attitude/temper issues that resulted in some very very bad decisions and cost him his legacy at Indiana, because he did do a lot of things the right way.

The main thing that I'm going to take from these last few years..

is that I hope all the past mistakes are learned from by Ricketts. People make mistakes, but need to learn from them and not repeat. This obviously calls for things all the Cubs fans have been calling for on this site. I’m tired of being negative and instead am remaining hopeful for the future. We have to start somewhere and the time is now. Having said that, I believe the biggest statement of heading in the right direction will be the firing of Jim Hendry at the end of the year and starting fresh from there. He did have a few good years, but his era is done with the Cubs. Time for change will hopefully be upon us Cubs fans deserving of a team built to make runs for the playoffs and at the very least show hustle and passion for the game that we have all grown up loving.

"No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference." — Tommy Lasorda
