Will you still purchase your usual tix if Quade and/or Hendry return in 2012?

After being extremely disappointed with the past two seasons, and not receiving a good value out of my Cubs tickets, I have already decided that if Mike Quade returns as Cubs manager for 2012, I will not purchase my usual package of bleacher tickets (15-20 games) next January or February.  If I want to go to any games, I’ll buy single game tickets for dirt cheap, when people are struggling to give them away, and the Cubs are running several promotions to discount tickets, just to get people in the stands.

I’m on the season ticket waiting list, and I typically purchase the Flex package that is offered (9 games or 13 games) several weeks before individual seats go on sale. Then, I usually purchase additional single games to some of the best series (Cards, Sox, Yanks, etc.), when tickets go on sale to the general public.

With BCB being a soundboard for Cubs fans, which often gets read by members of the Cubs organization, I was curious how others felt about the same thing. And so, I’ve decided to create a poll.

but I won’t spend a dime on them until they win a title (maybe if they get close). I decided that after they got destroyed in the ‘08 playoffs and so far I’ve stuck to it.

That sounds like a tough one there, what incredible self control!?! How were you able to stay away from games since after 2008?

This year was not enjoyable at the prices I've paid for tickets.

And I know you’ve had several discussions about ticket prices this year.

All of the fellow Cub fans that I usually take with me to games lost interest, and no longer wanted to spend their $ at the ballpark. With the over inflated ticket prices and concessions, a day at the park can empty someone’s pocket real fast.

That leaves me either inviting people on the bottom of my list, or going by myself and eating an over priced ticket.

If you can't be a baseball fan unless your team is in postseason contention,

you’re not much of a baseball fan in the first place, IMHO.

I’m already dreading the end of the season, which is coming up far too quickly.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 16, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

That would describe my level of fandom for the Bears or Illinois football

If they can’t stay at least at .500 (for UI, .500 in conference play), I find it difficult to maintain interest. And I still consider myself a Bears and Illinois fan, just not nearly as dilligent of a fan as I am a Cubs fan.

Bad seasons happen.

This team has no plan, no direction. I don’t feel the need to invest myself emotionally a lot in a team that has no chance on opening day. And a lot of us feel that if Hendry is retained, that’s the kind of team they’ll have.

I can't relate to it. Not at all.

But I don’t necessarily think that makes them less of a fan. They just think differently than I do.

Personally, I find it sort of sad to see someone deprive themselves of having a fun time at the ball park. I catch myself wondering things like “why can’t they just loosen up and enjoy themselves?” But if that makes them happier NOT going or they feel their boycott helps send a message to management or whatever, so be it.

Happiness is a state of mind. But every mind is different.

Even as unhappy I was at the game I went to this year

even feeling physically ill due to 100+ degree heat, humidity that is so thick that you can breathe, and the sun beating right down on you, there was Carol Z. who works for the park who took me to a cooling station/drunk tank underneath the bleachers that many other employees were hanging out at. That made me happy. The Cubs also had their first 3 game win streak with that game.

personally last year I went to more games that they lost than won, and I had fun at all of them. This year I have chosen to take the opportunity to see what else the city has to offer…spend my money on something else, yes, I admit in protest, but also using it as a good excuse to see shows, museums, etc. Still having fun I might add :)

It's not a boycott

I have a limited number of days to use as vacation. While I am not rich, I am fortunate enough to have some discretionary money to spend on tickets. But there are other things that compete for my time.

In addition to working full time, I’m pursuing an MBA (at one of your favorite schools). I also volunteer for the Civil Air Patrol, and like to keep my flying skills sharp.

I used to go out of my way to have access to Cubs games – TV, radio, in person, etc. I don’t feel that pull with this year’s team, and if JH is the GM, I can’t imagine I’ll feel it with next year’s.

That doesn’t mean that I don’t want the Cubs to win, and that doesn’t make me bitter, uptight, less of a fan, whatever.

Some people have to watch very carefully the amount of $ they spend on entertainment. Some have to watch time. Either way, it’s a budget. So I’m not going to invest a significant portion of it (emotionally) on something that I’m not likely to get a return on (well-played baseball).

Fire Jim Hendry. Injuries aren't the problem.

Thanks

Well written. I want this team to win just as much as the rest. However with the resources this team has available this team should not be sitting in 4th place in a bad division. No excuse for this team not to be playing ball in September that means something.
Sure I don’t expect 97 wins every year, however the Cardinals are in the race every year why not the Cubs?
If Hendry and Quade are retained this team will be stuck in neutral.

You're not bad fans.

But it does make you fair-weather fans. And just to be fair – I don’t have any problem with fair weather fandom, I just like baseball too much to not go to the games.

Oddly enough, I don’t find this team nearly as unwatchable as the 2006 team. There is no one on this team as unwatchably bad as Neifi, John Mabry, or Ronny Cedeno or as flat-out unlikeable as Phil Nevin. I find it much easier to go to games lately than I did that year.

I love the game of baseball...

always have, always will. I love it whether I’m at Safeco Field or Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, or at my local semi-pro ball field 10 minutes from me. I have been to several Cubs games over the last 3 years where I just hated myself for going to the game because they gave me such ridiculously low value for the money I spent on them to watch them lose.

I’ve felt that way in other places too. I spent $100 for a mediocre seat to the Mariners opening day game so I could celebrate Dave Niehaus’s life… and I felt like I rather would have paid half that to get kicked in the groin… for how horribly they presented that game (they still hadn’t worked out a lot of technical glitches with old scoreboard features) and then how badly the two teams played.

I love baseball, I don’t love how MLB treats their fans right now. Most of the time it’s a poor, over-priced product.

I can't argue with the idea...

… that MLB has overpriced its product. Clearly, the way tickets are priced is a reaction to payrolls ballooning past $100 million. I can’t see that sustaining itself over the next couple of years. The best players will get paid. The mid-range guys may find themselves out of work, as teams try to fill those slots with minimum-wage players.

Sports in general are overpriced in the current economic cilmate. It remains to be seen whether that will change.

I'm not singling out MLB here...

that’s all pro sports… but I’ve loved MLB more my whole life, NFL has always been too expensive, and don’t like NBA. Not much left after that. Hell, even minor league games are getting too expensive. None of them are adjusting with the state of the economy. They’ve created this mess where ordinary fans can’t afford to go to games, which has created ridiculous salaries and payrolls… they have to start fixing it. There’s just no excuse for human beings to get paid this much to play these games, and so often do it poorly. It’s hardly just the fault of professional athletics, but you would have thought a recession would have changed things a little.

Maybe MORE games regardless of who returns

I actually much prefer Wrigley Field when they’re drawing 27-28k. It’s more comfortable to make up for the lousy infrastructure while still noisy enough to enjoy “fun at the old ballpark.”

I haven’t been to Wrigley this year, but that’s more of a factor of bad weather and work travel – there have been about four games that I was actively monitoring on StubHub and I’ve made it to none of them. I’m still planning to go to the 9/6 Reds game weather permitting, and either the 8/22 Braves game or the 9/19 Brewers game work permitting. If next year’s weeknight schedule works out, I can easily see going to 4-5 games if I can get tickets at 70% of face. (Buying singles on Stubhub hurts because you pay the $10.20 in fees.)

I had originally planned to go to 12 road games this season – I cancelled this month’s ATL SatSun and the SF Mon/Tue pairs so I’ll be at 8. Road games always depend on the schedule, and I usually can’t travel until mid-May. But the manager or GM will not be what prevents me from going to one weekend series a month in May-June-July-August if I like the cities: my 2012 wish list is SD, BAL, MIN, MIA, NYM.

I haven't seen a schedule yet for 2012..

… but, I do know this: the White Sox are supposedly playing the Brewers, Astros and Cardinals in interleague play in 2012.

So that means the Cubs likely get the Indians, Tigers and Twins, who they last played in 2009.

I’m hoping the Cubs go to Target Field next year. That would be a fun road trip.

There’s one weekend I know I can’t travel next June, and with my luck that’s when they’ll be in Minnesota. And there’s one weekend I can’t travel in July and that’s when they’ll probably be in San Diego.

I am on the fence on renewing my tickets

I will certainly attend a number of games but obviously it will be easy for me to buy tickets. It does say something that someone who has had season tickets for 23 years and lived 800 miles away for 20 of them would consider dropping them. Having to eat huge sums of money this year is clearly a major factor. I was always a shade disorganized on selling my tickets and never sold to brokers, but now that it is clear that any season ticket holder will lose a significant sum, by keeping them I have to think twice if it is worth it for me. I do have regulars who buy my tickets but only about half my extras. I will likely look to split them despite having turned down many offers over the years. I am actually lucky, I have very good seats at an actual reasonable price.

I will pretty disgusted if I don’t see some change. I could actually live with Hendry staying if Quade & Kenney went and there was an operations person over Hendry but I don’t see that happening.

Terrace Reserve just past third

Perfect view. I doubt my regulars will pull back much, but one guy who buys the most might or he might want share. I have not talked to him since April. Sorry no discounts. I don’t honestly think I will have that much trouble sharing them because they remain the best deal at Wrigley
pricewise at least in my opinion and they are very good. Also I only end up using about a dozen myself which makes me flexible. My pet peeve however is people wanting to cherry pick the best games. I ask anyone who buys tickets to buy a package in a way that reflects the schedule and I would do this if I split them. Post season would have to a literal split as in I go WITH whoever shares them as I don’t plan on missing any games.

209 row 11 seats 10&11, first two seats in from 211

No venders EVER in front of you. Dead in the middle of the row , that is the key for good seats in the Terrace Reserve . Great unless you have a weak bladder and need to get up a lot. My favorite part is that I NEVERFhave to get up to let someone out . when I get up I go out in one directions and back the other so as not to make the same group of people get up twice.

Just like many of the other season ticket holders stated i can afford to eat all these games or sell at 1/2 price when the average cost of my ticket with all the price tiers is 81 dollars….. it was different in the past when 5 years ago tickets were half this price and previously a third f this price…. I could handle eating tickets during a losing season…but the cubs have NO DIRECTION ..zero… i do not trust ricketts at all….. so im not less of a fan its just they have out priced the tickets for the value of the seats…. about 2 times the what people want to pay for the games… and Im not subsidizing a disorganized owner who has yet to show me or tell his fans whats the plan….

I still enjoy going to Cub games and I'm not going to deny myself that

It’s a great way to spend a day. However, I have been going less and less and will continue to go less and less if Hendry and Quade are kept in place.

I used to go to around 15-20 Cub games a year about a decade ago but then the explosion in ticket prices occurred and I couldn’t justify it anymore. There was a point not too long ago where I could get a 200 level seat and a beer or two for $40 or so. Not anymore. The cost threw me way past what I was willing to spend at least 15 – 20 times a year.

I usually go to around 4-7 games now. If those two are kept on, it would drop to 2-3.

If those boobs are still in charge, I will only buy tickets to one game before the season and wait to get them for half price or less after the team stinks it up in Apr and May. After all, I still love baseball, just can’t stand paying through the nose to watch it being played so shabbily.

It would also be nice, as Al has pointed out many times, if they implemented a sensible rainout policy, so I could be comfortable buying tickets and knowing I wasn’t just flushing money down the drain because I have to get on a plane back to Seattle.

Exactly. They seem so proud of the fact that their surveys say tons of people come from out of town and that Wrigley is a tourist attraction, but when it comes to rainouts, the policy seems to be, “You’re here, we’ve got your money, now get out.”

I'm considering dropping my tickets this year.

Part of it is priorities (Second kid), but most of it is just being fed up with the team. I made a comment back in June that I believe this was the worst season to hold tickets between the price and the team. Its actually gotten worse since then. In past bad years, I could always take some enjoyment in watching young players come up and suceed or fail. This year we dont really have any young pitchers to watch and I dont trust we will promote any position players due to the 40 man. Its just a bad old team, which I can find no enjoyment in. I can take a bad team as long as their building toward something, but we are not.

If Hendry is back, I’m done. Not doing anything at the trade deadline was as inexcusable as anything i’ve ever seen with this team. Quade is bad, but its really Hendry that I cant put up with anymore. I’m not sure anyone even knows what Crane Kenny does, so I can’t really commment on the job he’s done.

I'll be buying tickets next year...

My youngest son turns 3 next year and it’s been a family tradition to make your 1st Wrigley trip at 3 years old, that began with my Dad taking me in 1980. The previous games were both wins, with one being that great comeback against the Brewers. It’s getting hard to raise Cub fans here in Wisconsin but i’m doing my best.

Good luck and have fun

While we don’t have a specific age, it’s always cool for the family outings. Previous generations did that with me, I already did that with my kids and grand kids for me is not too far down the road.

Just win the next game...!

If you really want to see the Cubs

and still send a message. Go see the Cubs on the road. I live in Detroit and it is a shorter drive to Cincinnati or Pittsburgh than it is to Chicago. The only thing that will truly get ownership’s attention is a decrease in ticket sales. You are seeing more and more fans dressed as empty seats this year.

This is what I do

I haven’t been to a game at Wrigley in years. But I live close enough to Milwaukee, Cincinnati and St. Louis to make those trips easily. And I usually make at least one other trip somewhere else during the season.

As far as I’m concerned, I hope the people who say they won’t go back if Hendry and/or Quade return follow through with their threat. That means more tickets for me.

Have you been paying attention?

There’s plenty of tickets for you anyway. What’s stopping you?

I'm going to make a suggestion.

You two please ignore each other. I don’t need you namecalling each other here.

Thank you.

I wish I could see the Cubs in person, period.

But I live in Western New York and can’t afford to go on any sort of trip right now, or probably next year either. Not looking for any pity, just stating the facts. I’ve never seen the Cubs in person; I’m just grateful I have MLBN and WGN to let me see some of their games on TV.

I cashed out after last season

Enough is enough on ST’s. Hardly been there this year too. When I did go a couple times, I got tix on SH.

A few of us will be biking down there next week and end-Sept, all the tix will be had on SH. I’m not handing over any more of my hard-earned cash for Cubs tix.

Just win the next game...!

The Cubs need to read this thread.

It’s a cautionary tale.

And, as said above... it was part of my reasoning to create it.

I doubt I will buy directly from the Cubs.

Especially if they raise prices again. I’ll probably go to games but it will be to help out a season ticket holder at least get some of his/her money back…I’ll buy directly from them, likely at a discount on StubHub and/or eBay

BEAR DOWN!

There is no better place in the world than wrigley to watch playoff baseball. And even when the cubs are not winning – it is still an amazing venue even at these crazy prices. If I don’t spend money on bleachers – give me something as fun to spend my money on
