Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 18
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs broke out to a 6-0 lead and hung on to beat the Salt Lake Bees, 8-7.
Alberto Cabrera started and got tagged for six runs on eight hits over only 4.1 innings. He walked five and struck out four.
Robert Coello got the win because Cabrera did not go five, but he earned it with 2.2 perfect innings. Coello struck out three.
John Gaub collected his seventh save with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit. Gaub struck out one and did not walk anyone.
Center fielder Brett Jackson was 2 for 5 with a double. He also stole a base and scored twice.
Third baseman Scott Moore went 2 for 4. He scored twice and knocked one man in. DH DJ LeMahieu was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He had one RBI.
Second baseman Ryan Flaherty and catcher Chris Robinson were both 2 for 4. Flaherty had two RBI.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies outflanked the Jackson Generals, 4-1.
Starter Ryan Searle got the win with seven strong innings. He gave up but one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked three.
Jeff Beliveau got his third save with two shutout innings. He gave up one hit. Beliveau didn't walk anyone and struck out three.
Shortstop Junior Lake and first baseman Rebel Ridling both hit solo home runs in the sixth inning tonight. Lake's was his fifth home run for the Smokies and 11th overall. He also doubled in a 2 for 4 game. Lake scored twice and had two RBI.
Ridling's home run was his 17th this year. He was 2 for 4.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs speared the Brevard County Manatees, 4-3.
Casey Harman pitched the first four innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He had some control issues as he walked six but he also struck out six as well.
Kyle Smit got the win with two innings of relief. He surrendered three hits and an unearned run. Smit neither walked nor struck anyone out.
Fireman Frank Batista pitched a scoreless ninth for his 24th save. Batista did give up one hit. He neither walked nor struck anyone out.
Peoria Chiefs
The Peoria Chiefs skinned the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 5-4.
Luis Liria only gave up one hit in his five inning start. But he allowed three runs, probably because he walked six. Liria struck out three.
Roderick Pichardo got his first Chiefs win with two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit. He did not walk anyone and struck out two.
Third baseman Dustin Geiger was 3 for 5. He scored twice and had one RBI. Catcher Micah Gibbs was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He had one RBI.
First baseman Richard Jones was 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI. Center fielder Rubi Silva was 2 for 5 and scored once.
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks got ambushed by the Spokane Indians, 8-2.
Ben Wells started and got hit hard. He gave up eight runs on eleven hits over only 3.1 innings. At least he didn't walk anyone and he struck out three. One other small consolation was that one run was unearned.
Second baseman Zeke DeVoss was 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored once.

I'm looking forward to the day
That the Jackson Generals get Diamond Jaxxed by the Smokies, West Tenn style.

Flaherty and Lake seem to be getting it going
Also nice days from Jackson, Geiger and DeVoss. Tough game for Wells..
Seems like after a rough start for Flaherty, he's made an adjustment
i’m interested to see if he is given an opportunity to compete for a spot next season. i’d really only want him up if he was going to start/platoon. Big fan of his. Geiger still showing some promise. Lake is frustrating because of his tools but i just am not sure if he is going to pan out.
Lake is starting to adjust to AA
His last 10 games he’s gone .306/,342/.528. During his time in Tennessee he has walked more often while striking out at about the same rate. Neither number is pretty in AA, but he’s slowly improving. 11 HR and 34 SB on the season so far (391 AB). Will be interesting to see if he gets added to the 40 man roster this winter. He might also interest other teams in a trade.
Spearing the poor Manatees?
How sad but I guess that is better than “The Daytona Cubs chopped the Brevard County Manatees in their boat propeller”.
John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.
DeVoss looks ready for a promotion
Maybe he’ll move up when some of the draftees who just signed filter into the system.. Any reports on how his defense at 2B is coming along? That may be the only thing that holds him back from moving quickly through the system.
Rather poor
Highish number of errors, some on routine chances. Save Daytona untill 2012, I think.

I mean Peoria

It will be disheartening if he can't stick at 2B
I would think like others said that he can work on defense at Peoria just as well as in Boise, but maybe that’s not the case.
Generally, you learn positions
at lower levels.

really, I'm ambivalent on
the next 3 weeks. I’d like him in Boise in a playoff push.

I don't really care, either
Just pointing out that learning defensive positions is pretty routine even at Peoria.
Defense
I’d say his offense warrants a late season move to Peoria; I don’t think it’s much harder to work on defense at a higher level compared to a skill like hitting.

Agreed. A groundball is going to look the same any level.
While the pitching gets more advanced in terms of hitting.
Hendry out according to MLB Rumors
Jim Hendry is out as the Cubs’ GM, according to Chicago sportscaster David Kaplan (on Twitter). Hendry was promoted to the GM job in the summer of 2002 and was under contract through 2012.

I wonder if DeVoss is hurting a little still
He hasn’t been the SB beast that he was early on. The first 2 weeks or so, he would attempt to steal every time he got on 1st. He hasn’t even attempted a SB in his last 5 games, despite getting on base 13 times. Could be looking too much into this, but just something I noticed.
nuts
these minor league reports are silly, so
some stupid with a flare gun………burned the place to the ground
You keep posting stuff like this in the minor league wraps
So why don’t you just do us all a favor and quit reading them.
