Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves Preview, Monday 8/22, 7:05 CT: Get Ready For A Long Night

The Atlanta Braves have played 22 extra-inning games this season (going 14-8). If that seems like a lot of games that have gone past nine innings, it is. The major league record for such things is 31, set by the 1943 Boston Red Sox. Oddly, that same year, the Braves -- then also in Boston -- set the National League record, 27. Maybe there was something in the Boston water that year, who knows. That NL mark was tied by the 1967 Dodgers.

So it's possible those records are within reach, and perhaps we'll see an extra-inning game or two in this four-game set. The Braves have played nine 10-inning games, eight 11-inning games, three 12-inning games, one 13-inning game, and the noted 19-inning game on July 26 vs. the Pirates that was decided on what was probably a bad call by plate umpire Jerry Meals.

There hasn't been a really long game at Wrigley Field since this 16-inning affair on July 12, 2002 against the Marlins. It ran 4:38 and the Cubs won.

The longest game in the history of Wrigley Field ran 22 innings and six hours and 10 minutes, on August 17 and 18, 1982. In the pre-lights days of Wrigley, it was suspended for darkness after 17 innings and completed the next day. The winning run scored on a disputed play at the plate.

Anyway... get extra snacks the next few days. If the Braves play to form, we could be in for some long games.

Cubs lineup:

Barney ss, DeWitt 2b, Ramirez 3b, Peña 1b, Byrd cf, Soriano lf, Colvin rf, Hill c, Dempster p

Braves lineup:

Bourn cf, Prado lf, McCann c, Uggla 2b, Freeman 1b, Jones 3b, Gonzalez ss, Constanza rf, Jurrjens p

The Cubs, of course, just finished taking two out of three from the Braves in Atlanta last weekend and will play the entire season series in a two-week span. The last time the Braves were in Wrigley Field was exactly one year ago, on August 22, 2010, Lou Piniella's last day as manager.

So it's not surprising that neither of tonight's pitchers has faced the other team since that series last year; in fact, Ryan Dempster and Jair Jurrjens faced each other on August 20, 2010. Both pitched well; both got no-decisions in a game blown by Carlos Marmol in the ninth inning. Sound familiar?

Current Braves are hitting .234 (32-for-137) against Dempster; Michael Bourn hits him best (.346, 9-for-26). Current Cubs are 13-for-49 (.265) against Jurrjens with one home run (Aramis Ramirez).

This should have been a discussion I'm his office with Castro

they could have watched tape to show Castro what he was doing, and he could have been told that it’s unaceptable. Bengkulu him the next day is unprofessional to me, as it’s making it public. It also should have been discussed that that kind if play is not the way his players play! All of them ever. He needed a broadcaster to point out this teams dead- assness. The whole thing is ridiculous, and the entire coaching staff should sit out this game!

Oh, it was an auto-correct thing? Nevermind.

Mike Quade and his whole staff should be embarrassed to the max...

…at having a broadcaster point out the lack of concentration of a player on the field.

I enjoy this website because it's so interesting to see folks pole vaulting over mouse turds.

Settle down Beavis:

Quade said he watched Castro tape on mute and said he does not listen to Bobby Valentine.

You cant tell me this stuff was not brought up to Quade.

If it was on mute, he missed some good jabs thrown his way by Bobby.

by TJ11 on Aug 22, 2011 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

why the hell would he admit to that?

… he’s full of shit and is just embarassed that Valentine called out him and the coaching staff for not doing there jobs. Quade is an idiot and makes himself look like one by saying stupid things like that.

but the phone was on muteMike explained after the call that he hadn’t learned anything he didn’t already know.

From the florida 16 inning game..

Double Play: Fielder’s Choice P; Lee out at Hm/P; Mordecai out at Hm/P-2B-1B-C.
Does anyone remember this? According to BB-Reference we tagged two guys out at home on the same play…Is that correct? Seems like I should remember such a play..

I wish that would have been going on with Castro while Ricketts was in the booth.

I think Bobby has enough balls to go ahead and bring it up to him if it did.

A great question would be “Why does he think its OK to not pay attention?” And “if we can see this why doesn’t your coaching staff?”

by TJ11 on Aug 22, 2011 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

I really wonder what Ricketts reaction would have been if the team would have embarressed him like that on National TV.

I do not thinks its totally out of the realm of possibiltiy that we would have a new manager today.

Not likely but a possibility.

by TJ11 on Aug 22, 2011 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

He did just can Hendry....

But you got to admit, it would have been hilarious to have Bobby ask him those questions…

by TJ11 on Aug 22, 2011 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Tommy seemed very uncomfortable in the booth

… he seemed like he was afraid they would ask him a tough question or something. i’m tired of hearing about him living in that apartment and meeting his wife in the bleachers. It was cute when he got the team but nobody cares anymore Tom.

Here in Chicago on biz and was wondering if...

…anyone recommends a good bar downtown to watch the Cubs’ and Bears’ games? Got a place called Timothy O’Tooles by my hotel but it looks kinda generic.

Thanks!

Everywhere nearby is real touristy. Maybe the bowling alley on Illinois could be sorta cool. They have a ton of TVs.

Bears

Bears tonight for me at least as long as the starters are in. After that will flip back and forth.

Unfortunately for Cutler at one point if Samardzja is pitching I’ll be watching the 2nd best WR in a Chicago uniform but I’ll be watching the Cubs.
