As many of us suspected, the "Wilken will leave if we fire Hendry" meme was a lot of hot air and baseless speculation.

Does Wilken still want to see it through and watch his draft picks grow up and form the core of a contender?

"Hell yeah," Wilken said. "Without a doubt. That was my goal when I came here. Jim hired me, but I work for the Chicago Cubs."

That settles that. It will, of course, be up to the new GM. But (edit) Ricketts will recommend that they keep Wilken on, and he's hoping to stay.

I think Maddux will have that same attitude

At least, I hope so

It's not Hendry recommending Wilken.

It’s Tom Ricketts. Let’s hope the new GM takes this recommendation. Wilken has done an excellent job.

"Solid" job

I’m not sure anyone can claim that he has done and “excellent” job.

Isn't it an established fact here

That Ricketts knows nothing about baseball and should not be listened to in regards to baseball operations?

I think he is too

I’m in neither the pro- nor anti-Ricketts camp, but on this one I believe Wilkens would be a good piece to keep around.

The concern was always that the new GM would relieve Wilken of his duties...

not that he’d quit when Hendry was fired. So this isn’t exactly news to anybody.

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2011 9:25 AM CDT reply actions

No the concern was he would leave with Hendry

I never believed , but that was how it was usually stated here.

Your right...

…and I always thought that was total BS, that Wilken and Fleita would take off because of Hendry.

If so, that's dumb

I thought the concern was always: if Hendry’s fired, the next guy would replace the staff. Which is still a threat.

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2011 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Is there a recent example....

… of a team that hired a new GM who then went and replaced every one of the underlings?

Doubt it

But why should that stop baseless speculation that rivals “the moon landings were all fake”?

"Just shut up and play" - Matt Garza

by RiskyBusiness on Aug 24, 2011 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Every one of the underlings? No. But some? Almost certainly.

The new GM doesn’t have to replace ALL of the subordinates. He just has to replace the specific one. There is definitely the chance that the new GM will want his own scouting director. That’s all I meant when I said it “is still a threat.”

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2011 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

And I think that's dumb

I can’t imagine a guy quitting such a limited-commodity job over loyalty to Hendry. I think someone who has been in the business as long as Wilken has understands that this is a business, and that Hendry was treated pretty well to have had as long a run as he had with such mediocre results.

by SouthernCub on Aug 24, 2011 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I thought it was dumb too

In fact I got in a pretty lengthy discussion on here the day Hendry was fired or the day before (I can’t remember which)

That guy was CERTAIN that Wilken would leave the day Hendry was let go. I kept asking him to back up that claim and he kept coming back at me with what amounted to “because I think so.”

Should it really be a concern

If people are hell bent on hiring an Andy Friedman type GM, don’t you want him to bring in his own guys. Guys that share his long and short term visions. If you are going to hire this big name, you don’t want him to be handcuff right out of the gate.

'Ricketts will strongly recommend'

is different from ‘Ricketts will require’

If Friedman, Cherington, or someone else is TR’s choice, but he insists on bringing in 5 or 6 new guys, so be it.

I doubt it will happen that way, but if a guy with cred brings in a guy with cred to replace a guy whose cred relies on being compared to people before without any cred, so be it.

My thought is, who is responsible for creating the thought-process that drawing walks and taking pitches that aren’t strikes are good ideas. I don’t think it’t all on Wilken. It’s not all on Flieta. But someone has to train patience, even if Josh has to stay up twenty-five minutes later to finish off Boise results.

I think Wilken is staying because he'll get used to 10 million + draft budgets VERY easily

It’s hard to walk away from an owner that not only says he’s committed to what you do but backs it up financially.

Yeah, like D98 said...

there were many, many people here who thought Wilken would automatically quit.

Castro only hits doubles.

by Kansas25 on Aug 24, 2011 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the bigger concern

was that the new GM would want someone in that position he (or she in the case of Ng) would be more comfortable with.

I’m sure that Wilken will run the 2012 draft, but we’ll see what happens after that. If it’s Andrew Friedman, he worked with Wilken before he came to the Cubs.

by Josh Timmers on Aug 24, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's hope...

…the new GM is more concered with “winning” as opposed to “comfortable”.

We had comfortable for the last 10 years, time for a change.

To some yes...

…but to others, it means someone who will be “my buddy” and someone who will agree with me.

Well, if everybody thinks the same and the team is successful,

then I guess it’s OK.

I’m glad to read this, too. I had heard (and repeated) the Wilken-will-leave meme, but I’m happy to see I was mistaken.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Aug 24, 2011 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

A few things

First, the idea that Wilken and others would lave if Hendry were fired is predicated on Hendry actually getting another GM position. He might eventually, but with the long line of young prospective GMs getting a lot of publicity, the odds aren’t in Hendry’s favor. Rumors abound that Hendry will likely end up working for one of a handful of teams as a special assistant to a GM. Point being while Wilken may have been rumored to leave if Hendry were to leave, its not like Hendry is going to be given the opportunity to run another organization any time soon and while Wilken likely will land somewhere if he were to leave the Cubs, the idea that Wilken, Fleita, Maddux, et all will “follow Hendry” just isn’t realistic.

As for Wilken and others, it certainly seems as though he has done a good job recently and he has a great track record. That being said, if you’re bringing in soneone like Friedman, Hahn, Cashman or Epstein, you need to give them the opportunity to shape the organization. Its been said for quite some time now that one of the problems with the organization is that it lacks a real cohesive vision, mentality and way of doing things. I honestly question whether, if Andrew Friedman is reeled in, whether Tim Wilken fits into the vision. Its beyond letting a new GM bring in “his guys”, its that new GM putting together the organization, from development to drafting to acquisition based on a philosophy and having people head up those areas that have the same vision, using the same metrics.

by dmlichte on Aug 24, 2011 11:19 AM CDT reply actions

Nothing behind this, but

Wilken may well stay, but Flieta may end up re-assigned.

by timh815 on Aug 24, 2011 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

IMO...

…Flieta may need to go to change the philosophy on how the young guys are developed on the farm. Let Wilkin draft and have a better guy oversee development.
