Works for me, depending on the price. It is interesting that while Hendry engendered a lot of loyalty, no one -- yet -- has said they won't return as a result of his dismissal.

We Got Wood.

Let’s keep him. Our bullpen is one strength that needs to continue. We know we have many other areas that need improvement.

We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 for Hall of Fame.

Isn't it weird

Saying that our bullpen is one of our strengths? But it’s true. Wood, Marshall, Shark and occasionally Marmol make a pretty good bullpen for us, and I think that’s something to build on for 2012.

Hell, Russell's been a good reliever.

BTW, the strength of our pen is another reason why Marmol should have been shopped last month.

Except for the fact that I'm still writing 2010 when I mean 2011.

It’s August. Geez, D98.

Right, which is why I think we should hang on to him

His contract limits the number of suitors and trading him now would’ve selling low, I think. Marshall’s the guy who should be traded.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Aug 24, 2011 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

It's the reason we should have tried to trade him in July.

A contender who thought Marmol might have been the missing ingredient could have stomached the salary increases. But after the season — when his contract increases? Not so much.

Agreed

I’m sure that it’s not Kerry that is a problem in the club House.

I agree

We could’ve gotten a decent return for him (maybe an actual MLB starter!)

Definitely bring him back.

One of the few?

Wood, Marshall, Russell, Shark and even Marmol have all been good.

I might agree with the 1st 4, el...

Marmol not so much. 8 blown saves is a lot for a so-called “elite” closer, wouldn’t you say?

Good job, Tom...now on to the manager problem.

by Easy Ed on Aug 24, 2011 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I hesitated with that.

Marmol has been very good at times. Very bad at others. I think they should have tried to deal him.

Shark? Marmol?

Funny.

Shark has been the most improved Cub this year.

Marmol had a really bad stretch — but he’s still got 30 saves.

Bring him back, I hope him and Reed play the rest of their careers here.

Besides, I don’t want Marmol as the closer next year, I want him in his 07/08 role.

No wait…how’s this…“I refuse to reply on the grounds that it may incriminate me?”
If it’s for the same he signed for this year, I’m in. I don’t think it will be, tho. Double it AND multiple years, I’m thinking…but, that’s just me.

Good job, Tom...now on to the manager problem.

by Easy Ed on Aug 24, 2011 2:24 PM CDT reply actions

Particularly now that Hendry is gone

Why are you absolutely convinced that Wood will get a multi-year deal?

I would think two-years at the absolute most… but why are you soooooooo certain he’s getting more than a one-year deal???

Well, really not as sure as I was BEFORE Hendry got canned

I like him for 1 year at $1.5 M…he’s not worth anymore than that.

Good job, Tom...now on to the manager problem.

Keep him here

Pay him 3mil he can play and probably is a better pitching coach then Riggens.

I want him back of course. I know you just all died of shock.

by puckishcubsfan on Aug 24, 2011 3:20 PM CDT reply actions

Keep him,

The city loves him, he wants to stay, and he has pitched well. Of course we all jump on him for blowing a lead in the 7th once in a while, but he is going to be cheaper and pitch better than most free agent options. Besides, we have been really bad at getting free agent bullpen help. We don’t even trade well for bullpen help.

by Bled Dry on Aug 24, 2011 4:59 PM CDT reply actions

Bring him back.

Not only is he a true Cub but he’s also put up good numbers. Good anchor in the back end of an already very solid bullpen.

Now if only we had some starters and clutch hitting…..

Come back, Kerry!

I make it no secret that despite all of his setbacks, he is still my favorite player of all time by far! There are not many tougher S.O.B.’s in the game than him.

In fact, Kerry going to Santo’s funeral and then taking a 90% pay cut to come back here is such a moving story, I just can’t get over how wonderful it is.

Does anyone have the picture of Santo kissing Kerry on the cheek? If that picture doesn’t move you, I don’t know what will.

by cubfanwill on Aug 24, 2011 7:50 PM CDT reply actions

Huh?
There are not many tougher S.O.B.’s in the game than him.

He missed a month with a frickin’ blister…been on the DL more than any other player I’ve seen. Oh…never mind. 1 year at $1.5…anything more would be tragic.

Good job, Tom...now on to the manager problem.

by Easy Ed on Aug 24, 2011 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey, Ed...

… we know how you feel about Wood. YOU try pitching with your skin falling off part of your pitching hand. He’s not the only pitcher who’s had this issue.

My point is this, Al...

… at one point or another, throughout the season, when he’s needed most, he’ll be on the 15 day DL and will be out 3-4 weeks. He’s notorious for it. If you can’t depend on a player, then why continue to put yourself in a bad situation?

Good job, Tom...now on to the manager problem.

Anything more would be tragic?

No, tragic is $18 million for Zambrano, Soriano. Tragic is $4.5 million for John Grabow.
