2012 Cubs Schedule Released; A Visit To Target Field Next Season

This year has been pretty bad for the Cubs.

So why not start looking ahead to 2012? The Cubs -- and all other MLB teams -- released their 2012 schedules on Wednesday. The Cubs' 2012 slate features their first-ever visit to Target Field in Minneapolis to play the Twins (road trip!), and a visit from the Red Sox to Wrigley Field for the first time since 2005.

The season will open April 5 at Wrigley Field vs. the Nationals, and close also at home on Oct. 3 against the Astros. Note that the Marlins are now the "Miami Marlins", so indicated on the schedule. Also, there are several occasions, unlike previous recent years, where the Cubs will play teams on the road for a week, then the same teams at home the following week, or vice versa.

The complete schedule is after the jump.

rainout

sellout crowd for opening day

Correct.

In case of a rainout on 4/5, they can play on 4/6.

Always thought that this was a dumb policy.

Do they think that the next game wouldn’t also be a sellout if game #2 suddenly became “opening day”? What if it rains both days? Seems like every year teams use up most of their off days early in the season and then scramble to fit games in later in the season when there are few off days in the schedule.

by txtom on Sep 14, 2011 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

The point is...

… if they have a game the next day, people who have tickets to game #1 get screwed out of going to Opening Day.

The issue is the rainchecks

All those people bought tickets for opening day. By playing the game the next day, they can still go to opening day. Sure, the second game would sell out, but then you’ve got to find seats for everyone who bought tickets to that game and the rainout tickets

by Josh Timmers on Sep 14, 2011 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

And if it rains both days...

… well then, no one has much control over that. It has never happened in Cubs history.

I'm debating asking my father in law to go too.

He’s a Twins fan. So it might make for an awkward weekend.

But Target Field is just so gorgeous. I’m excited for those games.

I've been to Target Field twice

and that will be on my list to do next June for sure. I will be anxious to see all the Cubs fan reaction to their field and closeness they created. I know it’s a little early, but there are not really any bad seats. I would avoid the high center field stuff and stay anywhere on the main concourse, including the seats in the outfield off the main concourse. Go early, there is a lot of things to do in the stadium!

We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 for Hall of Fame.

You won't regret it.

But the field is great. the stadium is really nice. Big fan.

Agreed.

Twins ticket sales in general are likely going to be down in 2012 because of their bad 2011, but that series will sell out, especially on a weekend.

One can argue that it was even worse than the Cubs'.

But yeah, everything I’ve read is that ticket sales are projected to stay leveled, at least.

"I'm not a broadcaster! I'm me!"--Ron Santo

by chilango2 on Sep 14, 2011 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Doubt they'll sell out the season

But the Cubs series will sell fast. The Twins fans support their team and with Target Field replacing the Metrodome, I think the Twins will be a little less susceptible to the downward swings in ticket demand that other organizations see when their team has a down year or two.

I got to my first game at Target Field this summer and they really did an excellent job with both the ballpark and how they incorporated it into the city. Light rail makes the ballpark easy (and inexpensive to get to).

by dmlichte on Sep 14, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think they'll sell out 2012

They are not good this year (worse than us) and I DO think the new stadium factor is wearing a little. You know they won’t make a big FA signing.

Can BCB get some rooms at a discount?

My wife is excited she finally gets to go to the Mall of America, and I get to see the Cubs. It will be funny to be on the Twins ticket page the day they go on sale. Of course they also have tools to help their STH’s sell or trade what they can’t use. What a novel idea.

If we all pool together maybe.

Like a wedding party. I am thinking of getting reservations soon, hotels near the park may try to gouge Cub fans.

by jpeters407 on Sep 14, 2011 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Reservations

Don’t rush. While this might be a popular weekend in the Twin Cities for Cub fans, its not likely to have much of an impact on hotels, unless you want a certain hotel downtown. There are lots of options, and there are great deals. Twice a summer I have to book two blocks of rooms (5-7 rooms) in the Bloomington area and always end up getting a good deal at some of the area’s nicer hotels.

by dmlichte on Sep 14, 2011 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Rooms in Minneapolis

It is very easy to get inexpensive rooms in Minneapolis (depending on what you consider inexpensive). Both Priceline and Hotwire are great sites for getting rooms here, and over the weekend, rooms can be had for a good price. Especially for those who want to pair their trip with an expedition to the Mall of America, there are LOTS of hotels in Bloomington, MN, which is where both the mall and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport are. There is a variety of types of hotels, too. The light rail will also take you from the Mall to Target Field. I’ve gotten rooms in the Bloomington area at some of the nicer hotels (the Sofitel, Sheraton, etc) for under $80/night.

I believe that similar deals can be had at downtown hotels, as well. Minneapolis is a very pedestrian city and there are a lot of great restaurants and bars… so if you want to stay downtown, there is a lot to do.

by dmlichte on Sep 14, 2011 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

But, would you want to stay in Bloomington for games?

Isn’t that kind of far from Target Field?

Yes, but the lightrail is right there. And it only goes one way: to Target Field.

Pick it up at MOA, go to field.

Hotels downtown are probably more expensive.

It's really pretty useful.

Also, there’s some decent hotels within walking distance that won’t break the bank. The Hilton on Washington near 35W comes to mind. It’s about a 30 minute walk to Target Field from there but it’s really pretty beautiful in the summer. The hotel is right on the river and near the University of Minnesota, and also is near the (not so) beautiful Metrodome.

As for the rail system, look into it because it really can get you around downtown pretty well.

by bdlugz on Sep 15, 2011 8:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Bloomington

As others have said, Bloomington is far from Target Field. It really depends on what you want. If you want to be in walking distance from the field and want to spend most of your time downtown, don’t stay in Bloomington. I still think you can get a priceline room at a good deal (friends of mine stayed at the Westin Downtown Minneapolis a few weeks ago for $50.

Bloomington/Mall of America is one end of the Light Rail (there is only one line right now) and Target Field is the other end. Its about a 30 minute ride as there are several stops, but its inexpensive and easy. If staying downtown isn’t your cup of tea, Bloomington is a great option. Besides the Mall of America, there are lots of great places to eat and its 5 minutes from the airport.

by dmlichte on Sep 15, 2011 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Around game times or rush hour

The ride is 45 mins to an hour for the full MOA to Target Field ride.

But super cheap and pretty nice. I take it every time I go down there. Park at MOA and ride on down.

I wish it came out to the burbs.

I get that...

Brewers went on the road against the Yanks and Sawx and didn’t play the Jays or O’s, plus their interleague opponent has been the Twins who are perennially good, this year being the exception. THAT was a sucky interleague schedule.

Note that the Back to the Future Prediction is one step closer

Marty McFly notes that the Cubs win the world series in 2015 against Miami. Clearly, the renaming of the Marlins portends the Cubbies will rebuild for three years or so – just in time to get rid of the big contract guys.

Yes, but we need two more things to happen first.

1) The Marlins have to move to the AL, and

2) They have to be renamed “Gators”.

Not this time.

The new stadium curiosity factor should have it well attended for at least one year. The capacity is fairly small (37,000).

Is it just a fear of the AL East?

The talk has been that “the AL is tougher than the NL”, “the DH makes the AL pitchers more competitive in interleague and the WS”, and “the NL needs to adopt the DH”.

But the drive in baseball expansion and realignment has been to the NL.
1993 – Marlins join the NL
1993 – Rockies join the NL
1998 – Brewers move from AL to NL
1998 – Devil Rays join the AL
1998 – Diamondbacks join the NL

Team owners don’t seem to be clamoring to get into the AL as much as fans and reporters are.

Royals

I just can’t see them willing to move to the AL West without a fight. If MLB remains with an unbalanced schedule, they’ll see their west coast (9pm starts) increase significantly.

by dmlichte on Sep 14, 2011 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really.

Let’s look at it based on this year’s schedule.

This year, KC had 13 road games in the Pacific time zone (LAA, SEA, OAK).

They have 36 road games in CLE, MIN, DET, CHI.

That’s a difference of 23 games. BUT! They would be replacing some of those games with more games vs. the Rangers, who they played just three times on the road in 2011.

So, essentially, let’s say the MIN and TEX games are a wash. KC played nine games at MIN this year… so we’re talking a difference of 14 extra West Coast games if KC is in the West, compared to now.

What you do in this case to get KC to agree, is to ask the West Coast teams to play those games and those games only, at 6 pm local time. That’s not too early, yet early enough to get a decent 8 pm start in KC.

It’s doable.

Doable...yes

I just think you’d see the Royals fight it, and I also don’t think that the West Coast teams (and their fans) would be all that thrilled about 6pm start times.

But FWIW, it might be worth adding (NL) around “NEW YORK” to distinguish the Mets from the Yankees, particularly since once series is so close to “Boston”. I had one of those moments of ‘wait, are the Cubs playing the Yankees next year?’

Scrolling through the schedule, I figured those two “New York” listings must be the Mets… but it might be worth an add for clarity.

thus TBD is not a possibility. but the rest of the line up could be.

So i you can give you can take it.

by epsilon on Sep 14, 2011 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I sure hope you're right...

but I’m skeptical at least until I see player transactions taking place.

Incidentally, while I don’t think that WILL be the Cubs opening line-up (for one, Garza should go ahead of Dempster, but that’s not very important)… isn’t it awfully likely any given piece in that line-up IS back? What percentages would you put on those listed players returning? Mine…

Castro: 100%
Barney: 95%/80% (95 to be on the team, 80 to start)
TBD… i.e., Ramirez: 60% (you would think he returns, unless he wants to test the market)
Pena: 60% (they seem to be laying the groundwork for his return)
Byrd: 70% (“cheap” “solid” veteran… could be dealt but just as likely to stick, right?)
Soriano: 85% (just too much $ to eat… IMO he’s around one more year, then Ricketts swallows hard and takes the medicine… particularly when they are still on the hook for Z’s money)
Colvin: 70%/35% (seems likely to return for ‘one last shot’, but RF is a ‘free’ spot to try to upgrade)
Soto: 75% (could be dealt for SP??)

So I think someone will be moved… but I just don’t see wholesale changes being made yet. I could easily see dealing Byrd and Z, bringing back Ramirez, signing one non-CJ Wilson SP and calling it an offseason.

I hope like crazy that I’m wrong. I hope the new GM comes in and just about takes a flamethrower to the place. But I just think the most likely scenario is one more year of “ride it out” with “dead” money (Z, Soriano, etc.) and then see bigger changes for 2013.
