Shameless self congratulations

…this team does nothing particularly well. The current Vegas over/under on the ‘11 Cubs is 81.5 wins which at this point looks like a pipe dream. I predict 72 wins out of our current collection of ’no hit, no field’ misfits.
Eisman57 on Mar 22, 2011 8:34 PM CDT
Bet the farm on 72 wins or less. Hopefully Ricketts will finally grow a pair and dump our underperforming GM. Teams that tolerate mediocrity tend to be, well, mediocre.
Eisman57 on Apr 15, 2011 9:47 PM CDT
Sorry Al…The ‘11 Cubs are simply not a very good team. Starting pitching is thin due to injuries, the back half of the bullpen is a mess, the offense is spotty at best, and the defense is among the worst in MLB. They’re playing .500 ball against mostly bottom feeders to this point. They’ll need to play well to get to achieve my prediction of 72 wins.
I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!
Interestingly enough...
… one of those “bottom feeders”, a team the Cubs went 4-3 against this year, won the NL West.
Go figure, right?
Cubs had a winning record vs. only four teams (D’backs, 4-3; Astros, 8-7; Mets, 4-2; Giants, 5-4)

Interesting to look back...
I predicted 75 wins (same as ‘10), Al’s response was, ‘This team’s better than last year’s, they’ll win more than 75’
I’m not throwing this in anyone’s face (I’m really not, Al). It’s just been the kind of year that didn’t feel right from the beginning. I’ll be sitting around waiting for spring and hopefully watching some good playoff baseball.
and you’re celebrating that you were right not unhappy about being right. Must not be a CUbs fan.

My thoughts on the 2011 Cubs and beyond...
First, I want to say that I think that the Cubs fans who think that Tom Ricketts is a blithering idiot are wrong. He’s not an idiot. I think that Tom is a lot more savvy and intelligent when it comes to business and running an organization than they think he is. Having said that, I think that Ricketts whiffed in 2009 by not firing Jim Hendry at that time. Second, I hope that the Cubs have learned a lesson in that it’s not how much you spend on players, but how you spend it. In the past 10 years we have seen a front office all too eager to snag the latest superstar. Unfortunately, for them, they sacrificed character and being a team player in exchange for short-term victories. I think it’s long overdue that the Cubs get rid of the prima donnas and malcontents that have plagued the clubhouse for far too long. Third, enough with hiring “player’s managers.” This team needs a leader. A leader doesn’t have to be a vocal, “in-your-face” kind of guy. We had that with Lou Piniella and Lou’s strategy might have worked 10, 15 years ago, but it doesn’t work with players today. The Cubs need a strong leader who has pride and respect in the uniform and his influence rubs off on the players. What I’m saying is that there has to be a new attitude and tone from the top that permeates throughout the organization. I don’t know if Ryne Sandberg is the answer or not, but I know for sure that Mike Quade is not the answer. I believe that Sandberg is the best choice for manager because he played the game and is a Hall of Famer. Some of the Quade sycophants won’t want to hear this, but the fact is that a lot of the guys on this current team do not respect Mike Quade. As a result, he lost the clubhouse. Sandberg will be tested his first year by some of the guys on this team, but I think that they will find out rather quickly that Ryne Sandberg is not Mike Quade. And some guys won’t like Sandberg, but they will respect him. And the key word is “respect.” Sandberg mentioned it a lot during his Hall of Fame speech. There has to be respect from the top of the organization all the way down. And it starts with self-respect. Respect in your self. Respect and pride in wearing a major league uniform. Respect and pride in being a Cub. Playing the game the right way and playing together as a team. If the Cubs can get that message across next spring and the team buys into it, they’ll be off to a much better start in 2012 than they were in 2011.

Quade has sycophants?
Are they the ones who just want him hanged without being drawn and quartered first?
Might I just say that...
…that is one impressive-looking block of text.

I really enjoyed the banter and discussion… sometimes it got a little out of control, but it’s nice to talk to some Cubs/baseball fans.

If you’re going to criticize the Cubs, fine. Do it in a way that is honest, intelligent and worthy of respect. Name-calling and personal attacks don’t make you look good nor do they earn you respect. I’m beginning to think that it must have been Ken “Hawk” Harrelson posting on Yahoo under an alias. ;-)

As Brenly put it...
…this was really a “dead ass team” the entire year. I think I predicted 70-75 wins and they met expectations.
This team, never played with any purpose, had too many guys that were asleep when it mattered and a manager and coaching staff that were an absolute joke.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Did he make that comment this year?
I know he said that last year when Lee and Zambrano got into it at the Cell, but did Brenly make the same comment about this year’s team?
Yes, he did.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
But let’s get rid of the idea that they don’t care because they didn’t perform well.
Often players in bad slumps stay that way because they are trying too hard.

I enjoyed my first year on BCB
and while i wasn’t able to be around much i enjoyed this site a lot
Life is great....
This team is so pathetic...
I can’t even laugh about it. Horrible recent past, seemingly horrible near future. Starting to wonder why I bother.
Al I think you deserve extra credit for this year because it’s a lot easier to run a site when everything is sunshine and lollipops with the team.
I wasn’t really around much til 07 so I don’t know how it was in 06 and last year I was in and out due to my health issues.
Maybe it’s a sign of progress that it was our first back to back 85 or more loss seasons since 99-00!
Nothing happens unless it's first a dream
I found bcb the winter before the 08 seeason
Each year I say I am going to spend less time here also. Granted this year with them being so bad I did spend less time…….. but I still spend way too much time here March-Sept.. :)

Not an epic fail, but a total failure.

What's so wrong with that?
The Cubs & White Sox are resemble each other more closely than they’d like to admit. Both had exceptionally long World Series droughts and loads of underperforming teams as well as a Black _ team in their past. The differences tend to be superficial. They even share the same name! Cubs used to be the Chicago White Stockings.

Nothing epic about the Cubs 2011 season
It went in with a whimper, out with a whimper, and had maybe a grunt inbetween and a whole lot of groans and moans.
And with the scheming with the season tickets renewal date, seems like they plan on keeping Quade. Look for the announcement within hours to 1 day of the renewal deadline.

Which GM are the Cubs going to hire now? Probably somebody few have heard of who will make mediocre decisions producing .500 teams + or – .020 or .030.

And I must admit that it kind of bothers me how popular football is in America while many of its fans dismiss baseball as if it’s beneath them to enjoy it.

Thanks to everyone on BCB during this dismal, dismal 2011 Cubbie campaign
I enjoyed the opinions, the thought processes, the banter, predictions and (some) of the blather! In fact, barring a coupla “tiffs”…it was an enjoyable season on BCB…not so much on the field! Lastly, a very special thank you to Al…the guy who made this possible, all us armchair MLB players, just “sharing our genious” with one another… /tries to think of a way to blame Al for truly crappy season…can’t, gives up/ :]

Rec'd.
This was my first full year at BCB. In spite of the bad season, I really enjoyed coming here this year. I think that all of you here are good people, even the ones that probably don’t like me very much. I enjoy the debates and I truly respect each and every one of your opinions. I just hope that next year by this time that we’re talking about the Cubs in the postseason.

I did. And I think that Al does a great job as moderator.
I say this as someone who has participated on several message boards in the past. Many of them have moderators who play favorites or who behave like power hungry dictators. Some people don’t like Al. They’re entitled to their opinion. I like Al and I respect him. He’s tough, but he’s fair and I think that’s all you can ask from a moderator. But I still think he’s wrong about saying that Larry Bowa shouldn’t be a coach on Sandberg’s staff if he’s hired. I respectfully disagree. Larry Bowa is a better coach than he was a manager and he’d be great. I think he would be a great mentor for Starlin Castro, too, and help him improve on his defense.

OMG
This Jeff on Jeff conversation had me so confused. For a while, I thought jeffmills1972 was talking to himself.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
Al's
the Bob Brenly of the message board. Kind of an understated, subdued style compared to more vocal, colorful characters (Carey, Brickhouse, Hawk, etc) but which creates a pleasant, easygoing atmosphere where the thoughts can freely flow, though moderating enough to keep it from ever becoming toxic.
Yeah, moderator despots suck. They think the forums are their own personal fiefdom instead of being the teacher/prof. in a debate class, just there to moderate the discussion, take out people behaving out of line, steer conversation towards the questions or things in the overall topic and to differentiate their opinion (being just one of the posters) from their moderation role.

Sorry, says 2012 for me.
Enjoy your eternity in baseball hell. At least you have Tony Campana.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
I kinda do, too.
His speed off the bench seems so incredibly useful late in close games. (And next year’s team will probably be playing just as many close ones as this year’s did.) But it may come down to Campana vs. a big bat such as LaHair or a better-hitting 5th outfielder such as Reed Johnson.

This year and next
My first year following BCB. This is a good place to read about the Cubs, and Al, I appreciate your efforts to keep everyone from going negative, and to remind us all that we are Cubs fans, and we should act like Cubs fans instead of people who boo their own team and start waves.
I think I predicted a season roughly as bad as this. As always, it comes down to starting pitching. Cashner was a wild card from Day One, and Hendry destroyed all is rotation depth knowing full-well that Russell couldn’t handle it. Lack of reasonable depth at #6 and #7 cost this team at least 5 wins. Obtaining Garza was nice enough, young, talented, but his numbers didn’t indicate “Ace”, they indicated inconsistency, which is what he gave us. A solid #2 starter to go wtih Dempster, a solid #3 or #4, and Zambrano, a solid #4 or #5. Winning teams have at least one ace, sometimes two or three, and that’s just baseball.
The bullpen, good if you don’t count Marmol. I didn’t mind his extension when it happened, but I sure hate it now. He went from unhittable to untradeable in one season. Four more wins or so lost to Marmol’s bad delivery, but our setup men made up for most of that. I still don’t like Szamardzija that much, but I would take him back as our 6th and 7th inning guy. Not to start.
The offense… adding Pena to a team that already had three #6 hitters in Byrd, Fukudome and Soriano gave us a very ineffective bunch of guys, most of which either couldn’t hit good pitching, or couldn’t hit when it counted with runners on. Add the fact that Geo gave us one of his “fat” seasons, and we didn’t have much chance to score enough runs to overcome an inadequate rotation. Castro and Ramirez were solid pieces, but they are not elite hitters. It would be nice to have a Fielder or Puhols next year, but we might just have to wait.
Quade, Listasch, Riggins and DeJesus…. All bush league. Strange decisions, poor leadership. Of course they didn’t have the talent to work with, but I don’t want to see the Cubs move forward with these guys. Most of all, we need a real third base coach, and a real manager.
Terry Francona may become availabe. We’ll have a new GM who cannot be worse than Hendry. We have an owner who understands that money needs to go to the draft. Let’s hope he understands that he needs the right organization top-to-bottom to develop them. I do want Andrew Friedman, and I sorta hope the Rays lose three this week – it could be our only chance at getting him.
