Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds Preview, Tuesday 9/6, 7:05 CT: Welcome, Reinforcements!
I noticed on Monday that the Reds had seven September additions to their roster -- and plan to recall two more players in a couple more days. There are spare infielders, catchers, outfielders and pitchers.
Now, to be honest, I think having nine extra players on your roster for the month of September is too many. There isn't enough playing time for all of them and I've heard that between salaries, travel expenses and per diems, it can cost up to $75,000 per player. In an era of multimillion dollar deals, that might not seem like much, but it does add up.
Up to today, the Cubs have had just two players added -- Bryan LaHair, who's played, and Andrew Cashner, who was activated yesterday and might appear as soon as tonight in relief. Today, three more players will be recalled from Iowa. Two of them, you have seen here before: DJ LeMahieu and Lou Montanez. One more will make his MLB debut with his first appearance: LHP John Gaub. Gaub, as you may remember, was part of the Mark DeRosa deal with Cleveland two years ago. After being very good in 2009, he was, um, less good (actually, pretty bad) in 2010, but better this season. He is 26, so not very prospect-ish, but I suppose being lefthanded, he's got a shot at making the 2012 roster. Here are Gaub's minor league numbers.
I would like to see LeMahieu get some playing time. Montanez, not so much. And I still wonder why the Cubs can't find a third catcher -- any third catcher, to give themselves some flexibility this month; for example, they could then have pinch-run for Geovany Soto yesterday. (Probably should have done it anyway, even with "just" one backup catcher.)
Cubs lineup:
Castro SS, Barney 2B, Ramirez 3B, Peña 1B, Soriano LF, Byrd CF, Colvin RF, Soto C, Lopez P
Reds lineup:
Phillips 2b, Sappelt cf, Votto 1b, Bruce rf, Mesoraco c, Cairo 3b, Frazier lf, Valaika ss, Leake p

Hey, look! Here's a team Rodrigo Lopez has actually pitched well against. He has not faced the Reds this year, but last year had a 3.00 ERA and no walks against them in two starts covering 12 innings. The last one, on September 16, 2010, was particularly good. Current Reds are hitting .247 (22-for-89) against him with just one home run (Jay Bruce).
Mike Leake has a career 3.21 ERA against the Cubs in five starts over 2010 and 2011, covering 43.2 innings. However, in those innings he has allowed a fairly large number of home runs -- 11. Four of those have been hit by Tyler Colvin. Perhaps Colvin can break out tonight and hit one (or more).
Today's game is on CSN Chicago and FSN Ohio. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

is the line for the over/under attendance tonight
Yep...over...they were lining up at the gate-starting at noon-to see Rodrigo Lopez tonight.
I’m not sure what’s sadder…the fact that this team was out of contention by Memorial Day OR the fact that this team was out of contention by Memorial Day and STILL found it necessary to start Rodrigo Lopez as much as they have.
You know life is good when you hear "Die Hard 5" is in production. Yippee ki-yay, &%^##(&(#&%-ers !
Weak SP in the minors.
Nobody likes that Lopez has started 12 games, but it’s not as if there were a lot of other options.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
At least we'll have Oneri around
4 more years to give us Hendry’s model of player development. Who is ready to join the rotation next year? Is Lopez still the best option?
If it wasn't for the injuries, we'd be printing WS tickets right now.
Yes, unless Cashner is all better and Coleman doesn't turn back into a pumpkin
Pretty disgusting, but true.
pretty.nippy.out.
I’m thinkin under…at least by about 5th-6th innings…

And why...
…is it necessary to keep trotting Byrd out in CF day after day? Reed Johnson can obviously play center. Have him platoon with Byrd and let Colvin play right every day.
Colvin!
For the first time in awhile.
feet firmly nailed to the floor of the Tyler Colvin bandwagon...
0-3 with shallow pop up and 2 Ks. BOOK IT!

Iowa Catchers
Castillo, Robinson and Cleavenger all hit well. Robinson was hot at the end of the year but he is a free agent. Not sure why Beef wasn’t called up but agree, always have a 3rd catcher in September.
We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 for Hall of Fame.
Castillo is on the DL
and Clevenger is in the playoffs.
If it wasn't for the injuries, we'd be printing WS tickets right now.
I think he's dead
to the Cubs future. He’s spent the last 5 years in either AA or AAA with the Cubs. Obviously they just see him as a career fill in. He’ll probably move to another system next year. Yes he’s a warm body but can we really expect Quade would even bother to give him a nickname?

so why not bring him up for the bobby scales experience?
throw the man a bone for his past then

His nickname would be "Robby"
Or “Chrissie”. Either way, he’s not even on the 40-man roster right now.

Clevenger is in the freakin' AA Southern League playoffs
If it’s between that and getting to sit on an MLB bench (at worst, but probably pretty likely), I promise you Clevenger wouldn’t have to think twice. I love following the minor leagues as much as anyone, but to a player, there is no comparison. I wish I knew why they didn’t give him a shot.

Wait a minute - Gaub "has a shot in 2012" when his PCL line includes 40 walks in 55 innings
While LaHair is Hoffpauir II? Huh??

I see no reason why Bryan LaHair couldn't be a useful bat off a MLB bench.

I thought the same with Micah Hoffpauir

Micah Hoffpauir and LaHair are two different people, right?

Left-handed relievers who throw hard
are prospects at any age.
Seriously, if he were an outfielder at 26, I’d agree with you. But I think you can still call a pitcher, especially a left-handed reliever, a prospect at 26.
The Ks are nice and I'm sure no one digs in when they face him
But unless he gets a clue about the strike zone, he ain’t a “prospect.” And his BB ratio has been worse the last two years than when he was younger.

If you get a chance check out the write up on Trevor Bauer in SI. This kid might revolution pitching mechanics. Bauers take on Strasburg is pretty interesting as well.

One thing I found interesting is that the kid was willing to drop in the draft until...
…he could find a team that would not interfere with his workout routine and game prep. He’s a believer in long toss (350ft. long toss!), iso-kinetics and the overall science of pitching. Check it out man, interesting read.
