Daytona Cubs Wrap: September 7
It's just Daytona tonight. The Smokies start their series with Chattanooga tomorrow at home. Brooks Raley will take the mound for Tennessee and Stephen Fife will pitch for the Lookouts.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs downed the Dunedin Blue Jays, 3-1. The win tied the best-of-three series at 1-1.
Daytona got excellent starting pitching again tonight as Jeffry Antigua allowed only one run over seven innings. He gave up only four hits. Antigua walked one batter and struck out one.
Frank Del Valle relieved Eduardo Figueroa with a man on first and one out in the ninth. He threw two pitches an induced a 3-6-3 double play to end the game.
The D-Cubs went out to a 2-0 lead when shortstop Elliot Soto had an RBI single in the second inning and first baseman Justin Bour had a sacrifice fly in the third. After the Blue Jays cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning, center fielder Matt Szczur homered to get the run back and end the scoring for the evening. Bour and Szczur were both 1 for 3 and Soto was 1 for 2 with a hit-by-pitch.
The Cubs and the Blue Jays will settle this thing tomorrow at 6:05 Central Time. You can listen to the game at daytonacubs.com. If the Cubs win, they will take on either the Bradenton Marauders or the St. Lucie Mets in a best-of-five series for the Florida State League Championship.

Who starts tomorrow Josh?
Really nice starts by Rhee and Antigua to start the series, looking forward to what they might do as they progress thru the system. Will Loosen or Harman start the decisive game?
So glad to see Szczur continue to prove Keith Law wrong
The Juan Pierre comparison was so utterly absurd.
Kevin Goldstein was dumping on Szczur just last night
I want Szczur to succeed anyway, but shoving it in Law’s and Goldstein’s mugs would make it extra swell.

What was Goldstein saying??
He’s had a rough end of the year after his hand injury, but it’s also the longest season he’s played by a long shot. I’m not overly concerned about him.
He very glibly said that
Szczur is not an interesting prospect because “he’s a 22-year-old struggling in High A.” That’s a bit of a paraphrase, but that was the gist.

when do we see Szczur at Wrigley?
Next Sept? Or will cubs hold him back like the did Jackson this year? I’m excited about his skills…seems to have speed and developing power. what OF position is he best suited for?
I'm no expert and don't know nearly as much as people like Josh and Ryno and Rynorooter
but i’d guess 2013 at the earliest. I believe he is better suited for CF and will bump BJax to a corner spot once he does come up. He’ll have to be placed on the 40 man roster this winter though, so perhaps he gets a sept look, really depends on how his year goes.
Szczur will
already be on the 40 Man. As that (and lack of a permanent GM) is one of the reasons BJax isn’t up, it will depend on Szczur’s play n 2012 and beyond.

Any review of how Justin Jackson of the Jays did
Not rootin for the Jays only Justin, I work with his dad
If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.
Love seeing Soto do well
I remember seeing this kid play at Dundee Crown as a freshman. You could tell then he was legit. I hope he makes it up to the big league club sometime…
I saw Soto the same day I saw Antigua
in 2010. Soto hustles all the time.
I thought Antigua was done in May. He seemed to wash out in Peoria, was returned to Arizona, then got bumped to Daytona due to one of our 47 pitching injuries. He was better in the FSL than the MWL…… go figure.

So weird to read "Soto, the short stop"
That being said, sounds like it was a good win. Go Cubs

Atta boy, Matt
Glad to see him come up with a bomb in a playoff game. Continue to mock Keith Law.
