This is a clip from Moneyball. They are talking about Carlos Pena, right?

Look who else was involved in that deal.
From Carlos Pena’s baseball-reference page:
July 5, 2002: Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Oakland Athletics with a player to be named later and Franklyn German to the Detroit Tigers. The New York Yankees sent Jason Arnold (minors), John-Ford Griffin and Ted Lilly to the Oakland Athletics. The Detroit Tigers sent Jeff Weaver to the New York Yankees. The Detroit Tigers sent cash to the Oakland Athletics. The Oakland Athletics sent Jeremy Bonderman (August 22, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

I love Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The fact that he's in it definitely ups the ante for me, too.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
An actor with the range to play both Art Howe and Truman Capote.

A bit rude
Obviously I don’t know the context of this exchange within the movie, but that seems like a pretty unnecessarily abrasive way to announce a trade to your manager.
I love Hoffman playing that character, though. Makes me want to see this.
I'm guuessing first base between Pena and Hatteberg is something they had already disagreed with.
And Beane traded Pena because that’s who he wanted full time at first, and was rubbing it in his managers face.
Think of the two skill sets
Pena takes walks, hits the ball a long way, or strikes out. Hatteberg…takes walks. In ‘02 for the A’s, Pena had 15 BBs and 16 RBIs. Hatteberg had 68 BBs and 61 RBIs. In early-naughties Beane thinking, he’s got a youngster he’ll have to pay a helluva lot for in the future, and a replacement that’s both cheaper (in the long run) and plus-WAR.
OTOH, I didn’t see Hatteberg win a Gold Glove in ’08. Or play after it, either.

"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
The book explains
That Beane traded Pena because he could get Ted Lilly for him, whom he wanted and he felt they didn’t need Pena and Hatteberg. Detroit wanted Pena, not Hatteberg.
Beane’s got good taste in getting Ted Lilly.

Yes but he had bad taste in trading him for Bobby Kielty

Had too
He was looking at a big arbitration payday. Saved over $2M in 2005 on salary.

Great saved 2 million and got an utterly mediocre OF with little power
who Beane gave a 2.1 million contract to in 2007 and he was basically out of baseball in by the end of that season. Lilly meanwhile was an AS in 04 and had 3 solid seasons for the Jays. That trade was a bad one

I can't wait for this movie...
I got the book the other day and just started it to night as the Cubs game started…
I’m about 90 pages in and it makes me wanna see this movie even more
Speachless...
I had the book sitting in my "to read" pile for a few years.
Every time I picked it up I’d see the word numbers and assume it would be tedious/boring/over my head. CG47 said something about not being able to put it down so I decided to finally give it a try. I couldn’t put it down either. Thanks CG.
Cracker Jack does not have an "s", even in the plural.
How exactly?

They had to get big time names
Otherwise no one other than die-hard baseball fans would go to see it.

if Brad Pitt wasn’t attached to it.

I want this version to come true! (Sub Quade for someone else if you like!)
Beane: Got a minute?
Quade: Yeah, take a seat.
Beane: You can’t start Pena first tonight. You’ll have to start LaHair.
Quade: I don’t want to go 15 rounds, Billy. The lineup card is mine and that’s all.
Beane: The lineup card is definitely yours. I’m just saying you can’t start Pena at first.
Quade: Well, I am starting him at first.
Beane: I don’t think so, he plays for Detroit now.
Quade: You traded Pena??

I'd definitely sub someone else for Quade in that scenario.

So who'd we get back from Detroit in the Pena trade?
Please tell me it was Verlander or Cabrera.

Nope.
We got Al Albuquerque back!!!!11
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
I keep hoping the Tigers will recall Fu-Te Ni again.
Ni and Aiburquerque on the same pitching staff would be awesome.
