Very light night tonight. Peoria and Tennessee are in their all-star breaks and Iowa was traveling to Texas.

Matt Szczur was activated off the disabled list today, although he did not play for Daytona.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs lost to the Tampa Yankees, 6-3.

Starter Robert Whitenack allowed four runs in the top of the first inning and the Cubs never caught up. Whitenack threw three innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out two as he continues to come back from Tommy John Surgery.

The Cubs didn't allow another hit until the ninth inning. Eduardo Figueroa and Ryan Searle each tossed two innings and A.J. Morris had one before Tony Zych got into trouble in the ninth, allowing two runs on three hits. He did have three strikeouts in the inning.

Taylor Davis caught and played third as he went 2 for 4 with a double. Center fielder John Andreoli was 2 for 3 with a walk. He also stole a base.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks won their first game of the year by capping the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 6-4 in 11 innings.

Ian Dickson made his season debut and he allowed three runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. He actually pitched a lot better than that line sounds. Two of the runs scored on a third inning home run that everyone at the game, other than the umpires, seemed to think was actually foul. The third run was unearned and scored after he left the game in the fifth inning. There was a 25 minute injury delay before the start of the fifth and Dickson wasn't sharp after the long layoff. (Volcanoes first baseman Bryan Nicholson badly hurt his leg when he got entangled with the Hawks right fielder Eduardo Gonzalez on a play at first base.) Dickson walked two and struck out two.

Rafael Diplan really earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief without allowing a hit or a run. Diplan walked two and struck out four.

Bryce Shafer got his first save of the year with a perfect bottom of the eleventh. He struck out one.

It was one of those games that reminded you that this is the Northwest League, as five of the six runs scored by Boise were unearned, scoring off of four Volcano errors. The go-ahead run in the eleventh was scored on a two-error play: With runners on first and third and one out, the Volcanoes dropped a pop up and then the shortstop dropped the throw to first base. Then another run scored on a successful suicide squeeze by Eduardo Gonzalez. Gonzalez was 1 for 4.

Left fielder Dong-Yub Kim hit his first home run of the year. It was a solo home run in the seventh inning that gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead. Kim was 1 for 5 and scored two runs.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 5.

After the loss, Volcanoes manager Tom Trebelhorn answered questions from angry Salem-Keizer fans at a firehouse across the street from the stadium. OK, not really. But Tom Trebelhorn is really managing the Volcanoes.
