Does anyone know anything about Jacob Turner?

Turner, the Tiger's top pitching prospect, is the biggest name I've been hearing in regards to the Matt Garza deal, which is apparently past the initial trade talk stages. I really can't find much about him other than stats, which are great but can be flawed based on the league the player is in, how old he is and how old most players are in that league, etc. If we do pull the trigger and Turner is the big prize, does anyone know what to expect? How soon could he be in the rotation? What kind of stuff does he throw?

There's a pretty long scouting report I found of him when Garza talks were hot a few weeks ago

He’s 20 and is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. He could easily start the year in the majors, but I believe we’d start him in AAA (which is the right move.) He was called up too early last year. He could be a cornerstone sitting atop the Cubs rotation for many years.

I was going to say the same thing.

He is a #1 or #2 type pitcher, at least projected anyhow. He has a big upside but probably needs another year in the minors. He could be a mid-season call-up type if he excels. In the long run, he will probably be a much better pitcher and under longer control than Garza.

We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 is going into the Hall of Fame!!

Thus why I really think

he would, and should be headlining any trade Detroit makes for Garza.
If they want Garza, they give up Turner, and I think Theo / Jed will look at it that way too.
And probably ask for a few more pieces as well.

He was rushed into the majors, got destroyed

Sad part is his confidence may reflect that.

As long as he avoids

Rich Hill syndrome, he should be ok.
And that really could work to the Cubs advantage as far as a trade for him.
I have a gut feeling that Theo / Jed are working towards getting a great haul for Garza, and Detroit may be willing to part with some of their top prospects to do it, Turner included.
My only concern in him coming to the Cubs, as well as any players, is how they will be taught in the minors. Will they get the training they need vs just going through the cycles and keeping bad habits, because they work in the minors.

by chrisw95 on Jan 10, 2012 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Turner must be in any Detroit package if they want Garza.

Castellanos is too risky of a headliner to me. I’d love to get Turner and Smyly.

Turner is a lot younger than Hill.

He’s a year younger than Starlin Castro.

And will still have a ton to learn

but if the raw skills are there, and the proper training as well, I see him being a huge part of the future.
And to get Smyly as well, would be a great leap forward for our future rotation.

His first out was good vs. LAA

5 and 1/3 and giving up only 2 earned runs on 3 hits. It was his September call-up that he got blown up and that could be due to playing longer than he previously had.

He'll be eligible to purchase alcohol in late May.

And here is his MiLB page.

If Garza is traded…. then Turner? Yes, please.

If he is

such a can’t miss, why the heck would the Tigers get rid of him? Even if he does not make the bigs until 2013, you would think they can go a year with out him or Garza.

by wild bill on Jan 10, 2012 2:37 PM CST reply actions

They have a legitimate shot at winning it all THIS YEAR.

And last year, their problem was no good pitchers after Verlander.

THEO!

by wrigleyrocker12 on Jan 10, 2012 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

That I

was thinking. Seems to be short sided vision. Me I don’t move him. But if he is all he is cracked up to be, go for it if you are the Cubs.

by wild bill on Jan 10, 2012 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

When a World Series championship is on the line...

…it’s OK to be short-sighted to some extent. The Tigers have a golden opportunity to dominate their division for the next couple of seasons at least. The Sox and Twins are a mess. The Royals are, well, the Royals — lots of young talent but they’ve yet to prove they can do anything with it. And the Indians, who have some young talent themselves, have a ton of ground to make up just to get to 90 wins. Verlander, Fister and Garza would appear to be a pretty dominant 1-3.

Agree with daver.

The Tigers definitely don’t want to give up Turner.

But Garza is awfully likely to better than Turner this year. And probably the following year, too.

So, they’re considering dealing a guy who might be Matt Garza for…. Matt Garza.

I find myself hoping...

…that the Garza for Turner deal is already in place and the two sides are now just quibbling over what secondary players should be involved.

And remember

even if he makes it in 2013, it may take a few years to work things. He is still only 20.

Ha. Huh?

Depends who they hypothetically trade for him. I was making a terrible play on words, but couldn’t resist – hence the GONG.

If the Cubs can get

Turner and Smyly for Garza, IMO, that would be a great return.

Sounds like the Cubs want more

From Paul Sullivan today

The Cubs have been listening to offers for Garza this offseason, but are only willing to trade him for four top prospects. Garza is also scheduled to attend the Cubs Convention, the team announced.

That may be too much for a player with only 2 seasons of team control left.

That's basically the haul...

… that the Padres got for Latos, or the A’s for Gio Gonzalez.

Unless a team gets desperate, looks like Garza stays a Cub.

I for one

would not be sad if Garza remains. They could trade at the deadline or sign him to a couple more years. I would hate to see him go but if it’s a haul of prospects I’d take it.

Even in the unlikely event that

blind squirrel Sully has found a nut…

There’s lots of ways “out” of that demand. For one, who is defining “top”? If it means 4 top 100 prospects, there’s no chance. But if “4 top prospects” was Turner, Smyly/Castellonos & 2 more pieces Theo/Jed find interesting (and are therefore “top”)… that could get done.

Exactly.

I’m sure they could be convinced to take 3 pieces if they really like them. 4 is probably a debatable variable.

by Ryno G on Jan 10, 2012 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

As much as I'm in favor of the rebuild...

…I can’t help being skeptical when I hear about young phenom pitchers (given their tendency to blow out their arms). Getting Castellanos too would go a long way in making me feel good about this deal.

by bluekoolaide on Jan 10, 2012 4:47 PM CST reply actions

Mlbn says Detroit will go with Turner as their 5th starter next year.

If Turner flops early then the Cubs will demand more for Garza at the All Star break. Bold move.

by Mitchener on Jan 10, 2012 5:48 PM CST reply actions

As a Tigers fan, are you in favor of trading him for Garza?

Dumb question...

…but what would be an equal return for what we gave up to get Garza? And what would be a better return for what we gave up to get Garza?

"Pounding sand since 1982...."

by cubswynn on Jan 10, 2012 6:39 PM CST reply actions

We gave away a top 50 prospect and top 100 prospect, a 4th oF, Back up Catcher, then Fuld

Turner and Nick Castellanos and throw ins would be better than we gave up. Turner is a top 25 prospect and Castellanos is in the top 100.

by Mitchener on Jan 10, 2012 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

It's weird because if I'm the Tigers I don't flip Turner for Garza...

…however if I’m the Cubs I don’t settle for just Turner for Garza.

Most reports I’ve read (because I can’t tell upside by just watching a guy pitch, though I have seen Turner pitch), say he’s a solid bet to be a #2. I don’t think a lot of people project him to be a pure ace, at least most of the guys I like to read who are scouting “experts”.

I know that Turner

never killed a hooker in Reno. So there’s that in his favor too.
