Damn. I missed both Castro threads.
Yeah -- but this seems to chart with other reports.
The only team with even slight interest was Baltimore. There’s no market for Soriano — which isn’t surprising at all.

Cubs GM Hoyer on Colvin: ``He’s certainly not out of the picture’’
Q: Why did Theo Epstein cross the road?
A: To Dump Garza
Huh.
Missed that.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
seems each time Hoyer / Theo say someone has a future or are in the plans
the plans are to be be traded for more pieces
Q: Why did Theo Epstein cross the road?
A: To Dump Garza
Precisely.
This means Soriano’s traded by week’s end…
Um, it depends on who you mean by 'they'.
The official line from the Cubs was that Zambrano would have to earn his way back. But, if this Cubs person is to be believed, the comment would be less guarded/gamesmanship.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I still think he's cut outright
Which is where all the surplus from the 2011 payroll is going.
They do need some power in the lineup.
And maybe someone picks him up at the trade deadline. I still think someone will take a flier on him for 3-5 million a year.
You do know he's actually worth something, right?
THEO!
by wrigleyrocker12 on Jan 10, 2012 9:28 PM CST up reply actions
Not much
But I think the reason he won’t be dealt is because every other team knows the FO is open to cutting him. Why take on $3 million or so of Soriano, when you can get him for league minimum?
why would you cut him?
Even I don’t think he’s worth his contract, but he’s not really that bad of a player.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

They both (stats & bikinis) show a lot, but not everything. - Infielder Toby Harrah

Okay, so I just got my head out of the toilet...
…and I’m starting to calm down a bit. Maybe, just maybe, he gets off to a good start…hits some home runs…doesn’t take any balls off the head in left…and Theo manages to unload him on some unsuspecting and desperate team.
I can’t believe that this has become the kind of stuff I fantasize about…
That pretty much settles it... Soriano will be gone within days...
Anytime the Cubs brass make a comment on the future of a player with the organization, that assumed future changes dramatically within a few hours or days. See Zambrano, Carlos and LaHair, Bryan, as examples.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

It's very likely Soriano is a sunk cost that we aren't recouping.
To be honest, I don’t think Soriano’s contract will prevent the Cubs from signing anyone they want to sign at any point. My guess is the Cubs will start spending when they see ideal candidates to spend money on and feel like the team could be turning around. They’ve already begun grabbing some prospects, have a couple guys ready to help in 2013 and will have likely $60M for the big league club in 2013 if nothing major happens in the meantime and the payroll remains in the $130M+ range.
If Soriano becomes unplayable (and he just might soon), it’s not like we’re going to be missing out on trading him for a halfway decent prospect. He can always be benched, released or sent to the minors.
At best, what are we hoping for? $3M/year for 3 years? I don’t see how we get more than that, and frankly that’s not the end of the world for me.
My philosophy for 2012 is watching Castro develop (assuming he doesn’t have legal issues), hopefully seeing Rizzo/Jackson near season’s end, seeing if LaHair can hit MLB pitching for a full season, hoping for some bounce-back from Wood/Stewart/Volstad. Not the most exciting season… but a bridge to a hopefully very exciting 2013, 2014 and beyond.

I agree pretty much everything
but Soriano can’t be sent to the minors without his consent.
Soriano's trade value?
Let’s imagine that the Cubs were willing to eat all of Soriano’s salary, as they did with Zambrano, what might the return be then?
would he be worth a Tyler Colvin type player?
Eamus Ursuli!
Definitely a sunk cost.
If we gotta see him play next near, can somebody on the Cubs staff at least get Soriano to quit using that war club of a bat?
I enjoy this website because it's so interesting to see folks pole vaulting over mouse turds.
What we are left
with is, I believe, more Sam Zell’s doing.
ding ding ding ding ding
Many different reports have said that Hendry only offered six years for Soriano, and that when he didn’t leap at that, McDonough took over negotiations and tacked on the final two years to get a deal done. I don’t have any inside info, but that makes a ton of sense to me given that the Tribsters knew they wouldn’t be the owners when the check for those last two years and $36 mm came due.
Now, even at six years we would have been overpaying Soriano badly, especially in the last couple of years. But at least you could see the ability to move on from the contract, either by eating a large portion of his one remaining season (as they did with Zambrano), or by letting the contract expire at the end of the year.

The sign on the stadium wall says
“NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL RUNNER-UP”, but I can’t read the year. Might be 2004, but that was Grand Valley State and I looked and that doesn’t look like their stadium.
Anyone know what stadium that is?
Here are all the Division II national championship results.

The sign looks like it says the year 2000.
Which would be Fort Hays State in Kansas.

But the pictures of the stadium from their website
don’t match up with the picture in the background of Heyman’s twitter account. Will someone with more time than me please solve this? It’s gonna bug me.
"Dad gum right this games gonna be played under protest. . . I guarantee this is gonna be one protest that's upheld." --Hawk Harrelson, 6/24/07
I'm not sure
it says 2000. That’s what it looks most like, but if you look closely you can see the hole in the middle of the zero for the first two zeroes, but not the last one. It could be a 4, 6, 8 or 9 too (though it doesn’t look as much like those others.
It’s also possible that the sign is for the softball team or something. The scenery looks kind of like California.
It isn't
from the team’s that were runners up in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009 or 2000. Maybe it’s for a softball team. Back to google!
It's not the 2000
division 2 softball runner-up’s stadium either.
I wonder if it could be from a practice field? Most of the division 2 baseball field seem to have a yellow line across the top of the outfield fence. The photo is just black chainlink. However, the outfield grass looks a lot nicer than the Fort Hays State stadium’s grass. I doubt they’d have nicer grass on the practice field.
I think I give up.
*********Mystery Solved***************
That photo is from the Grand Valley State softball field.
http://www.gvsu.edu/sportsfacilities/athletic-softball-field-21.htm
Next mystery: Why does Jon Heyman have a photoshopped background of the Grand Valley State softball field as his background? He didn’t go to school there.
Thanks for solving the first mystery.
For the second, I have no idea.

Back to the drawing board
It is definitely not the Grand Valley State softball field. They have an all dirt infield and Heyman’s picture has a grass infield. Also, the GVS picture doesn’t have enough trees immediately beyond the outfield fence.

I still think the Cubs make a splash with either Soler or Cespedes
and too answer the question in the post, yes, Cespedes is a CF but eventually i believe he will move to LF.
Doesn't Cespedes have a very good OF arm?
Might be better suited to RF.
True, but i'd be ok with him in CF if we got him
and then move him over.
I think the
Cubs should eat $40 M and trade him to the Os. If we get anything back great.

The Cubs set precedent with the Z deal - $15M is the price on the "All we will eat" menu
Nobody’s gonna touch Soriano unless Cubs eat at least $15M/year. And even that’s doubtful because it’s for 3 more years, as opposed to just 1 with Z.
Assuming he can put up halfway decent numbers (for him) this year, Sori becomes easier to trade next offseason as he’ll only have 2 yrs left on his deal.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
true
I guess I’m somewhat hopeful that a change in field leadership, i.e. Sveum & Co. might lead to more judicious handling of Soriano, and thus a relative increase in productivity/value.
Not holding my breath though…
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
kind of a catch 22. yea only 2 years left, but at what cost?
who knows, maybe he’ll be nice and retire.
Theo has said something to the effect of...
…maximizing the value of players he can’t trade away. Not sure what that means for Soriano. I’d suggest a platoon, but that would reduce Alfonso’s playing time quite a bit. And I’m not sure who would take the other side — doubt they’d give that many ABs to Campana.

If the Cubs
do end up having him this season, I would imagine his playing time will diminish. Maybe they could get more out of him by picking and choosing his playing time.

That would
be part of it. I am thinking around 300 at bats. Play him with good match ups. Remove him early and often. Figure the less he is exposed he might actually stay fresher and exceed better than any of us would think.
I might add
I am kind of counting on Jackson being with the team. Albeit that might be a stretch. I envision and outfield (if current roster stands) of Soriano, Byrd, DeJesus, Jackson and Johnson.
Ideally I would like to get DeJesus around 150 games as well as Jackson. Byrd can spell Soriano and Jackson. Johnson as well. You can have Soriano get his 300 at bats and Byrd around the same amount.
Really having Soriano on the team if used correctly, might not be a bad thing.
