MLB's Archaic YouTube Policy
Grant Brisbee of Baseball Nation takes on MLB and its head-in-the-sand policy on YouTube video posting of MLB games. Best line:
MLB wants stuff like this taken down because they want you to go to MLB.com and not buy the vintage baseball games that they don't have for sale.

If the NHL was like MLB
Then places like hockeyfights.com wouldn’t exist and that would make me sad.
Isn't most of that stuff
from the minors though? I’ve never been to that particular website, although I did have a friend who bought a hockey fighting video back in the early 90s.

It's got both
It pretty much documents every fight in the NHL, AHL and the Canadian Juniors. It’s got a lot of vintage stuff as well like this 1987 fight between Bob Probert and Todd Ewen.
Great
Now I’m going to have to spend the afternoon watching Basil McRae videos, my all-time favorite goon.

If MLB were like the NHL
… you’d play one extra inning in case the game was tied after nine, then settle it with a home run derby.

But would you get half a win for a tie?
Or do you get 2 wins for a win and 1 win for a tie? I’m so confused!
Is that the full or half windsor?
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
Don't forget...
the NBA. You can find almost any clip of Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and even Taj Gibson and Omer Asik on YouTube.
Heck, some of the best videos I’ve seen on there have been fan made clips of edited highlights like THIS one of Derrick Rose.
I posted a video of myself on TV from Japan that someone on BCB sent me
It was down in 4 hours.
Fukudometer: Created 3/31/08 Wrigley Debut 4/5/08 WGN and Japan TV Debut 4/6/08 Sun Times Debut: 4/20/08 Coffee Table Debut: 7/17/08
Unbelievable.
And unbelievably stupid.

What expect from an organization
That just made their clips embeddable a few months ago and even then the clips are still a few days old.
1977 Cubs-Reds Highlights on YouTube
There are highlights from that 16-15 1977 Cubs-Reds game on YouTube from 7/28/1977. At least, that was still up the last time I checked.
Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
Now you've done it.
They’ll probably pull them. Don’t post the link, either — that’d just make it easier for them to find it.

Great 1979 Royals-Yankees Game Up, Too
Yeah, I do go to YouTube way too much. I even found a 10-minute piece of an old Spirits of St. Louiis – Memphis Sounds ABA game from 1975 with Bob Costas announcing. Former Memphis State star Larry Finch was playing for the Sounds, who used to be the Tams, who used to be the Pros, who used to be the New Orleans Buccaneers.
Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
Oops, Spirits of St. Louis (Only 1 i in Louis)
The ABA and the MISL (indoor soccer) are the only two pro leagues that I can think of in which Memphis and St. Louis had teams in the same league. The Memphis Chickasaws were a farm club of the St. Louis Browns for a time in the 1940’s. Pete Gray played for both teams. Of course, the Memphis Redbirds have been a farm club of the Cardinals since 1998.
Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
Agreed.
What other business prevents people from paying money to see their product?

Need I say more?
Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
I directly blame Bud Selig for this.
One of the reasons MLB is probably the least-watched sport is because of shit like this. “DID YOU SEE THAT CATCH!” or “MAN I REALLY WANNA SEE SOME GRIFFEY, JR. HIGHTLIGHTS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE IT’S 313AM AND I’M HOPPED UP ON CAFFEINE” can never happen. Why? Because Bud Selig is near death and doesn’t know how the internet works.

How Far Back Does WGN Go With Complete Game Tapes?
How extensive is that WGN library? How many pre-1979 games are saved? I know that I see clips from a lot of old games, but I doubt there are too many complete game tapes saved from way back.
Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
WGN doesn't have that many, I don't think.
But I’ll bet a lot are in private hands, especially from about the mid-1970s on, when the home VCR came into exitence.

I don't have a problem with taking down entire games
but then I work in a business devastated by people posting illegal copies of material before the rights holder has a chance to make it available. I think MLB is bit nuts on the posting of small clips but entire game are absolutely copyrighted and something they may be slow about but are likely to exploit in the future. I have heard too many people claim that bit torrent sites and youtube postings of complete films really “help” sales and get more people to watch films. The ladder may be true but only at the cost of virtually decimating independent, classic and foreign film distribution. I realize this is not a popular view and the MLB has done lots of stupid stuff on black outs etc but to expect them not to take down illegal postings of entire games is short sighted. It is a valuable asset which I presume they indent to exploit.

I’m assuming this is movies, and this is because they suck the theatre revenue dry, then the pay-per-view revenue dry, then the rental system revenue dry, and finally, the home DVD purchase revenue dry. Then they rerelease it, with special features and in 3D, a week before the sequel comes out. And then when I have my own copy of the movie—that I’ve legally paid for—I’m forced to sit and watch commercials before I can watch the actual film. Or I can download the .avi or .mkv file and hit play…and it, you know, plays. If the MPAA wanted to make more money, yes, more money, they’d change their archaic delivery method to be more user-friendly.

For moviews, I agree completely.
But what “rights” are being violated by the posting of a 30-year-old game that MLB isn’t trying to sell?

Dan I work for small independent and foreign film distributors
and they are dropping like flies. Want to know why I hate youtube and hope the stop piracy acts passes? I work with one company that acquired a film that one the top award in Italy last year. It would have been tough to get into theaters anyway as it is hardly a big market, but now it is nearly impossible . Someone chopped into 10 segments and posted it on YouTube. The company following YouTube’s policy filled out the forms to have it removed. It is not like someone would think a 2 hour film made less than two years ago would not have a copyright. So they took it down and replaced with a snarky comment the gist of which was “some evil rights holder won’t let us keep this up” Again a FULL FEATURE FILM. Now that went down and youtube allowed the person to replace with a direct link to the illegal bit torrent site for download. This was an expensive production and a very good film. It won’t really ever show in the US because jackasses think it is better the filmmakers , distributors and theaters never get paid because after all it should all be free. Trust me it is the indie and foreign film world that is being killed and yet it gets presented like a bunch of little guys being abused by big evil studios. If you don’t want to pay to see a movie no one is making you but don’t let that justify stealing it.
I don’t know the market for old baseball games but they are in fact a significant MLB asset while they should work on getting more up, I don’t have a problem with them taking them down. It is the same copyright that one assumes protects someone from just copying all the stuff on SB Nation and reposting it without credit or payment.

Please educate yourself about why SOPA and PIPA are very, very bad things.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
Agreed.
There is no question that piracy of created works is a major problem. However, SOPA and PIPA are not the answer.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
I'd argue the majority of piracy is a reflection of archaic delivery methods and pre-2000s Hollywood money hungry companies.
Louis C.K.’s latest release is the absolute best example of how delivery method matters. The biggest comedian in the world releases his 100% original content for five bucks, DRM-free, with no middleman, and makes tons. This is how it can and should and probably will be done in the future, if entertainment knows anything.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
I agree with you, for the most part.
Indeed, Louis C.K. is at the forefront of a new way of delivering product, as is Radiohead for music.
Until everyone does it this way, there still have to be some protections from theft. Again, though, I agree with you that SOPA and PIPA are the wrong approach. I am 100% against them.

Not everyone has those resources
These are small films with limited audiences and some people still like to see them in theaters. Piracy is theft period. Sorry if what you want is not available in the form you demand but that does not entitle you steal it. Don’t buy it and urge the rights holder to offer other options, but most films, writing, music or comedy is not from giant Hollywood or New York companies and they are the ones being driven out of business by pirates and thieves.

Yes, Hollywood is bigger than independent films, we're established that fact.
Stop saying it. It’s boring.
And your resources point is invalid; the internet makes it easier than ever to release your stuff online and sell it. Don’t gimme that crap. I’ll cite a great independent film, that was released by one guy, which he then parlayed into awards, recognition, and huge press:
Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father
One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen, I bawled like a baby. If you haven’t seen it, don’t read a single thing about it. Buy, rent, or find it right now. It’ll make you furious, make you cry, and make you believe in the spirit of love and family.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
Yeah, that was pretty much the saddest movie I've ever seen.
Not even a contest.
DUMP GARZA. CORRECT THE COSMIC WRONG.
Well that is because your business has not been killed by Pirates
The Major objection to SOPA is that it will hold third parties like youtube responsible and force them to CUT links to Pirate sites. What is wrong with that? They allowed a film to be pirated on their site, insulted the rights holder and replaced it with a link to pirate site.
I want them and similar sites held accountable. The people I work with do not have the recourses do sue local pirate sites LIKE youtube and they can’t sue pirates outside the US. I don’t really care about the right of people to steal stuff which is what they do and what youtube and similar sites help them do. It is already hard enough for the rights holder to find and notify of an infraction, but once notified they need to take it down period.

Here’s what’s wrong with that.
If someone posted a stolen link, video, etc. here at BCB, and the owner of that link, video, etc. decided to enforce the law, SB Nation could be shut down as a company without even a hearing.
That’s what’s wrong with SOPA and PIPA as written.

Discussion of SOPA and PIPA
… come within the bounds of discussion here, because if they are passed as written, they could affect the operation of this site and SB Nation.
I’ll ask people to keep any discussion of these proposed laws to the proposals themselves and NOT bring any unrelated ideological statements into it.
Thanks.

That's exactly right.
Even stuff like SBNation could be sued or held liable for images we post that are not “ours”. Think about that.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
Not if they remove the material as soon as requested
Right now the internet is simply run over with illegal stuff most of the worst of it from links overseas. SOPA does indeed force websites to take down those links and stops places like google and youtube from profiting from the content. Actually it requires the ISP to shut the links down IF the right holder obtains a court order. The idea that a company is going to get a court order against SB Nation because someone posted a clip is absurd. The reality is that it is nearly impossible to stop even youtube from posting vast amounts of illegal material ( and links) even IF you contact them and ask them to take it down.

you won’t be able to bitch about this on BCB, because there probably wouldn’t be a BCB.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
If MLB were attempting to profit off of this, that would be a valid point.
However they offer the clips/games FREE on their own website. That would be like if your foreign film were listed for free on the movies website, and yet they would not allow additional exposure to a site that was the second largest search engine in the world.
Trying to compare those two things is fruitless.
Exactly.
Plus, they take down 30 or 40 or 50-year-old games that they are not making any money on. This makes no sense whatsoever.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
Al it is a major asset which they are admittedly slow to develop
but you are asking them to give up and give it away which is not reasonable.
They own the material. Most studios let their libraries of older films rot for decades until Warner Bros started to exploit theirs, first with regular DVD releases and now with a type of VOD release and nearly every studio is following them. Had these films just been up on youtube and bit torrents for years they would not have been able to do it. I get you find the policy stupid and out of date but MLB is not known for being on the cutting edge of technology and attacking them for not wanting to give their rights away is not reasonable. Stick to pushing them to make it available as opposed to suggesting they let others post it wherever they want.

Whether you like it or not, "just complain and hope it gets better" isn't much of a battle cry.
I’m sympathetic to your plight, but the downloading is here to stay, and there are some things that your industry can’t control, so the folks in charge need to figure out how to make the best (monetarily) of that. If people are illegally downloading films because no one cares to make it available for charge, then someone’s not trying hard enough. Since MLB isn’t willing to make much of their product available (for pay or free), people are going to find other means. In many ways, it mirrors many major label records. They spend so much time fighting the inevitable, cold truth (people pirate music) instead of finding out how to innovate, and they keep losing money. I mean honestly, an album leaks months in advance, and instead of moving up the release date or limiting press availability, they stubbornly refuse to do anything (or allow themselves flexibility) and watch themselves have a crappy opening week months later. Wow, big surprise.
The answer to these conundrums for ALL industries is not “bitch at lawmakers until things go back to how they used to be.” Sorry, technology far exceeds the pace of congress. Pirates will find a new way before the ink dries on a bill. Industries needs to learn how to make these advances work best for them. Adapt or die.
DUMP GARZA. CORRECT THE COSMIC WRONG.
Why doesn't
MLB themselves get a Youtube account and post clips or segments of game of interest and be open to requests. Seriously, how much money do they make off of selling old World Series games or regular season games besides that scam they pull at the end of every World Series for the winning team (buy the championship video now!)? Sports games have a very short shelf-life beyond a rare exception here or there; they are one and done (CLTV or CSN rebroadcast Buehrle’s perfect game around primetime that night since it happened during the early afternoon) and the novelty of watching an old game (saw a Dodgers-Expos postseason game on MLB TV or ESPN Classic once).
What year does MLB think this is, 1972?
