Tweet: Muskat, Sveum "could use Campana" in leadoff
@CarrieMuskat Carrie Muskat
Sveum says DeJesus leading candidate to leadoff for #Cubs but could use Campana #CubsCon
Hmm, that means Campana would have to be a regular in the OF, it either displaces a CF'er or LF'er? This is interesting.

I don't think it's his fielding that's a problem.
It’s his arm.

actually his UZR ranks close to Dexter Fowler
he ranked 3rd defensively

wOBA is suspect at .303
his issue is that he has to bring his OBP .303 up to .330 with his baserunning disruptive abilities. 8 BB needs to increase to 20 or 25 with the 140 AB’s.

maybe he should just run the ball in after catching it instead of throwing it.

What about Brett Jackson

Campana isn't going to be blocking anyone...
Anyone could be traded by July if that’s when Jackson comes up. Hardly worth worrying about right now.
I'm just saying what about Brett leading off when the time comes.
Obviously Campana shouldn’t be a roadblock for BJax.
Sorry, I took it as "what about a spot for him in the OF," not about him leading off.
I don’t think Jackson is going to be a lead off hitter for the Cubs due to his high K%. He’s more likely a #2 or #5 hitter, if his power develops he could be a #3.
Agreed, in the long term.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if he lead off at some point if Dejesus can’t keep his obp up enough.
I'm fine with Campana leading off.
So long as he only does it like, once or twice.

Could use Campana.
I “could use” about an extra 30 grand.
Both scenarios seem unlikely to happen IMO.

Campana
is going to surprise people in Arizona. He’s beefed up a bit and will learn better contact.

That with Colvin gone, the offseason weight training will now be known as “Camp Campana”? Is it sponsored by Doublemint gum?

This list keeps growing...
…of players in the Cubs system where the same is said – he needs to learn to take walks.
Well, if he doesn’t know by now, I wouldn’t expect him to change much in the future. What I don’t get, is how all the speedy guys the Cubs have brought up over the last 7-8 years and none of them can bunt for a hit. With the slow grass at Wrigley, they could add 15 hits a year if they spent time on this in the minors. But no, they were taught; hack away!

Campana can definitely bunt for hits.

It's just that the old regime didn't put great stock into walks.
Luckily were finally getting some guys capable of getting on base in the minors, and that should continue with the new regime.
What exactly are you basing the "he will learn better contact?"

That would be my fear.
He’s not a very good professional baseball player, but he is lightning fast. Wouldn’t be worth it to me to improve some of other skills from ‘awful’ to ‘not good’ if it causes his speed to decline.
DUMP GARZA. CORRECT THE COSMIC WRONG.
It's not like we have a ton of better options
It would be one thing if there was a clear, 100% consistent leadoff hitter, but it seems as though we might have a rotating leadoff hitter anyway. In that scenario it seems like this comment isn’t COMPLETELY idiotic.

I am fine with it, especially if it is instead of Soriano.....
I would be fine watching a DeJesus, Jackson, Campana OF…..if they are rebuilding why not?
Its part of the growing pains….At least Campana would hustle.
Johnson is there to platoon if needed too.
I agree.

Thanks, I just don't see a better time to figure out what these players can do.....
We are now building for something….
Are they going to be part of the new team in 2013?
Are they trade bait?
Are they people we just need to get rid of?
Its time to find out.
And finally it is nice to have people running things that I trust to make these decsions..
It is weird, I am very excited about a season that I know we will probably not contend in….But it needs to be done.
Here's the problem with benching Soriano.
If he’s rotting on the bench, there’s no chance another team will take a flyer on him. I’m pretty sick of watching Soriano, too — but if he’s on the roster and healthy in 2012, he’ll be playing. Also, the team really doesn’t have a lot of power (particularly right handed power) so putting Soriano in the fifth or sixth hole makes some sense.
That said, I wouldn’t be shocked if a Byrd trade led to Campana in center to start the year. The Cubs’ comments about being cautious with BJax might indicate they want him to start the year in Iowa. So, we could see an outfield of Soriano-Campana-DDJ fairly regularly.
Still, Campana leading off seems wacky. I’d rather go DDJ, Barney, Castro, LaHair, Soriano, Stewart, Soto, Campana (or switch Barney and Campana).
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
from what I've read about what Theo and Sweum said, in Al's front-page piece...
I think Soriano will either be a changed player or he will be on the bench. It doesn’t sound like Sveum and company will expect some real hustle from Sori. Maybe he’ll platoon with someone since he’s having knee problems and when he plays he will be a player that does hustle. Now will this changed player be a better player? I’m not sure, but he may not be so frustrating or maddening to watch.

The dude just looks so creaky.
I don’t think a more disciplined manager is going to be able to change the fact that physically, Soriano is in deep decline.

he cant just retire, he won't get paid, right?
if he can’t physically handle the job, what does a baseball team do? has this ever happened befor, when a player just cant play anymore?

Right.
And as disappointed as we are in Soriano, it’s not like he’s Koyie Hill at the plate. He’s not worth the money, and that really sucks, but he’s coming off a season where he hit close to 30 homers. He can still play.

This.
Soriano’s problem isn’t really about effort. He’s broken down physically.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I think we're all aware of where you stand on Soriano.
But I was addressing coolio’s point that a new regime will improve Soriano’s play. I agree with shoe that even if Sveum ends the country club mentality — and it sure looks like he will — that Soriano might not have enough physically left in the tank to be much good.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I believe both of those things are true.

Despite everyone thinking I love Campana
I would not want him as a regular unless he significantly improves his OBP and fielding. It would be like watching Soriano with a lot less power and a lot more speed and there has to be some better option. Speed is really fun to watch but lacking nearly everything else it is not that interesting or good. I hope he does improve but he has been so bad at drawing walks his entire career is is kind of scary. Bottom line it is not enough to fast & scrappy and overcoming an illness, you also have to
be able to take pitches, field etc (you know who I mean).

At first, I thought that Sveum was high
But upon reflection, if Campana is able to make the roster as the #5 OF, then I would OK with getting him spots in place of Soriano against one type of starter: a good (#1/#2) RH ground ball pitcher, especially if the wind is blowing in or they’re at a larger road stadium. Those are the places were Soriano’s value will be at its absolute bottom.
But how many times will that come up each year? 17-18 starts?
I personally don’t think that Campana will be valuable enough to be the #5 OF all season long – why sign Johnson and acquire Sappelt? So it’s likely to be a lot of posturing, unless they trade Byrd and Johnson starts the season in CF until Jackson is deemed ready.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
During the games you might have Rj in left and Campana in Center
RJ is the best option in left against ground ballers with a .783 ops. DDJ is pretty good with a .818 ops vs ground ballers.
frankly, id like to see BJax break camp with the club.
assuming one of Sori and Byrd is no longer on the rsoter. we’re going young, and i believe hes pretty much major league ready. lets have him grow with the core. but i guess i wouldnt be upset if we wait until june july to install our core of BJax, Rizzo joinigin Castro.
He can definitely still use some time in AAA...
There is no reason to rush him at this point, other than to appease eager fans.
If Byrd is gone, platooning Soriano/Campana by pitcher type might not be bad
Play Soriano against fly ball pitchers, Campana against ground ball pitchers.
