Anyone going up to the Minnesota Twins series in June??
ATTENTION CUB ROAD WARRIORS: Is anyone planning to go up to Minneapolis for the Cubs/Twins series in June? If you are, shoot me message! We should chat.
Me and two buddies are going there in 2012 for our annual Cubs road trip. This is our chance to finally get to see them play in Minnesota. I know nothing about the city, so we're looking for some local information -- hotels, bars, etc. Anything goes :) Maybe we can meet-up somewhere and raise a beer or three together.

Well, I live across the river in St. Paul.
(Slight oversimplification, but I do live in St. Paul.)
Downtown Minneapolis hotels will be expensive. Look for something along the light rail line in Bloomington and take the light rail right to Target Field.
What kind of restaurants do you like? I know my food.
Not much of a bar person any longer, though thankfully, they’re all nonsmoking now.

If you are looking to hit up some bars after the game
I would pass on staying in Bloomington. You’ll have a better time staying downtown. Shouldn’t be too expensive, Downtown Minneapolis has tons of hotel rooms. A quick search on hotels.com has the 4-star Marquette by Hilton for $119 per night staying Friday and Saturday. Not bad split three ways.
Lots of choices for bars downtown, majority of them are located off Hennepin Ave. Not really sure what you are looking for, I prefer the irish pub varieties so I stick to Kieran’s, O’donovans,The Local, Brits Pub, etc. Sneaky Petes might be ok, buts thats borderline, more of a fratboy crowd, same with Drink. Before or after the game I usually end up at Huberts for a quick drink. Decent place and they are the closest to Target Field. Thats about all I got.
I can recommend the Marquette
My wife and I stayed there in 2010 when we went to Target Field. Nice room, right in the middle of downtown, just a few blocks from the stadium. It even has in/out parking (at least with the special that we got).
"You know, you should be a lot more careful crossing the street like that, otherwise you could die - if that bothers you."
Last time
I was in Minneapolis. I ended up at Town Hall Brewery. This was a few years ago, but I had a good time there and would recommend it.

I live about
1 1/2 away from the twin cities and may make the trek. might move to Madison by then so I would be going to more Wrigley games . the best lodgings are outside of downtown for obvious reasons…. $$$$$ try Bloomington or closer is uptown. but the decent bars are all downtown so its a wash.

I think the best bars are in uptown
hate downtown Minneapolis. In uptown you have Stella’s, William’s, Liquor Lyle’s, CC Club, Chino Latino’s, Bar Abiline, and a few others all within a few blocks of each other (actually CC and Lyle’s are a little farther away but more of a local clientele and much better drink specials/prices). Plus I think uptown just has a better overall vibe to it then downtown. That’s just my opinion though.

I am making the trip with my family.
The Mrs. and daughter want to go to the Mall of America. I am watching Groupon for deals on rooms, Minneapolis seems to frequently have hotels there. Currently they have a deal but it is a business hotel which often are not kid friendly. Also looking to trade Wrigley tix for Target Field tix with a Twins STH.
Bloomington Hotels
I regularly book rooms in Bloomington during the summer. I have always had great luck using Priceline and Hotwire. We’ve regularly gotten rooms and the area’s nicest hotels for near or less than the 2 star hotels. We’ve stayed at places like the Sofitel and Sheraton for $70/night. Despite the fact that Bloomington is a tourist area, hotel rooms can be gotten for quite a good price, especially if you’re willing to use a site like Priceline or Hotwire, where you won’t know the exact hotel until you book, but you will know the quality level, amenities and approximate location.
I think that location depends on who you’re going with and where you want to stay. Downtown Minneapolis is great, very pedestrian and there are lots of great places. As was mentioned above, Brit’s is a great place and there are many other great restaurants and bars. If you’re with family and/or don’t want to deal with the city, Bloomington is my recommendation. Light rail will get you to the ballpark easily (about a 30 minute trip from the Mall station).
If you use Priceline or Hotwire to book
I highly suggest checking out Better Bidding. Takes the guess work out of the hotels you are bidding on, not 100% accurate but everytime I have used Hotwire or Priceline it helped me narrow down which hotel I was getting.
Heck yeah!
I used that site to save a small fortune on a multi city European vacation. Very helpful.
I'm going.
Been to Target Field twice. Awesome place. Lots to see and do in the stadium. Just walk around after the game. You’ll stumble into fun places.
We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 is going into the Hall of Fame!!

I live in the Twin Cities now:
The park is great with very good sight lines and decent food. Bloomington is not a bad idea as a place to stay as parking can be pricy and the light rail (the street level version of the “L”) is good for getting to the tourist spots The one issue is that it can get really crowded when there is an event such as a Twins game.
A plus for significant others that would rather shop then see baseball, there is no sales taxes on clothing here. The fans should be pleasant as I wore a Bears jersey to the Bears/Vikings game and did not get anything but good-natured ribbing. People at my work are already asking me if I am going to one of the games.

We are thinking about it,
but just got tickets for Memorial Day weekend in Pittsburgh, so that seems doubtful. Keep hearing what a great park PNC is so I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Agreed.
Although, I think I like AT&T Park in San Francisco a bit better than PNC, PNC is still excellent.
BTW, anyone who goes to Pittsburgh should take the 15-minute drive to the Pitt campus and see the Forbes Field historic site; there’s a marker where Mazeroski’s ball landed and part of the wall.

I haven't been to AT&T
but I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. It’s on my list.
And yes, the trip to the Pitt campus is worthwhile.

In one of the university buildings
… across the street from that site, they have home plate from Forbes Field embedded in its original location, in a corridor.
Well, not EXACTLY in its original location. If they had done that, it would have wound up in one of the stalls in the ladies’ room.

and if it happens to be October 13th when you go...
…make sure you’re by that wall at 3:36pm ET so you can hear the radio call of the 1960 World Series Game 7 winning HR. Better yet, get there by 1:00pm and you can listen to the whole game.
In what’s become an annual tradition in Pittsburgh, people gather by the wall on October 13 and listen to a NBC radio re-broadcast of the game (Chuck Thompson and Jack Quinlan). Here’s a USA Today article that describes it a bit more – linky
Here’s my favorite part:
It’s the 25th year for the re-enactment, staged by a group of fans called the Game 7 Gang. It was started humbly in 1985 by fan Saul Finkelstein. “He took a cassette player and an audiotape … and listened at the wall by himself,” Billetdeaux says. The event has been held every year since and typically draws 300 to 400 people, he added.
It’s just so cool that one fan, all by himself, started this. In the ensuing years, more and more people joined him as word spread, but still, it was very small and intimate gathering those first few years. I read in another article that I can’t find right now, but one year early on, Maz himself showed up, but in keeping with his demeanor, he didn’t announce himself, just stayed in the back, humbled and marveling how one play could still have such an impact after all these years…
Oh, and I second NBF’s advice on the Primanti Bros sandwich. That’s some good eatin’ there.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

IIRC, they have Primanti Bros. sandwiches at PNC, in case you can’t get to one of their shops.

Indeed they do
The original Primanti Bros. outlet, in the Strip District just north of downtown, is open 24 hours. Wholley’s fish market a block or two away is reputed to have a killer fish sandwich, although I have not tried it.

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I fully intend to.
I have a feeling that tickets will sell out quickly for this series though.
I’ve been to the Twin Cities several times and I personally think that St. Paul is more fun for nightlight, but that’s just me.
I had planned to go to this series
but a dear friend’s annual golf outing is that same weekend in Omaha, so I’ll be there instead.
I have been to Target Field, however, and it is quite nice. It’s different — not the red-brick places a lot of the new ballparks tend to be. Good food and good sightlines. The area around the ballpark is pretty lively, in the eating/drinking department.
I can’t speak for hotels, because I stay with friends when I’m there. They live in Bloomington, so we take the light rail downtown. It’s very easy and convenient. There are plenty of good hotels by the Mall of America, which has stuff for families (shopping) and singles (decent nightlife in that area).
The Twin Cities is a fantastic place, and I heartily recommend it.

going to take the 9 month old. Just booked the Marriott Residence Inn due to family member discount and proximity to Target Field.
Next task: acquire tix. Anyone have any suggestions?
Will there be decent seats available on 2/2 for Saturday and Sunday?
Any seating areas that are good values/stay away?
Can I have confirmation that HWSNBN will not be there, else my son will cry?
Also, planning on swinging by Surly, but any other good microbrewery locations in the MPLS/SP area?

There's a Bears bar...
called Alary’s Bar in downtown St. Paul which is a great spot to go if you’re a straight male. Particularly after 9:00 PM.
I think the owner of the place is the son of a player on the 85 Bears, but I can’t remember who. He (the owner) is a very large man, who literally turns a light on whenever he wants one of his bartenders to bring him a candy bar. It’s highly comical.
According to the website of the bar
… it was founded by a former Bears player, Al Baisi, who played for them in the 1940s.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
That place is insane on game days.
You have to get there 2-3 hours early to get a seat. And then it becomes near impossible to walk to the bathroom or order anything it gets so crowded.
Thanks for the tip. Will pass it on to good friend who’s moving to the twin cities in the spring and was wondering how you find a bar that hosts your teams games so to speak to hanf out with Bears fans.

Okay where does everyone stand on this debate.
I pride myself on how many baseball stadiums I’ve been too.
Back when the Metrodome was the Twins park I’d been to it for Vikings/Bears but never a baseball game. Could I still count that as a baseball venue I’d been to?
Nothing happens unless it's first a dream
In case anyone wonders I’ve been to baseball games in 23 current venues and 11 that no longer exist or host baseball 12 if you include the Metrodome. 12 current football venues, 7 past ones and 20 different college football venues. I’m a stadium junkie.
