Martinez has a torn ACL, and the Tigers are probably going to be looking for a DH soon. Think the Cubs are tripping over themselves to call the Tigers about Soriano?

I would, if I were Theo.

I'd think the Tigers are considered contenders to waive his NTC

Garza and Soriano

for Turner. No money straight trade. Then sign Oswalt for one year and you still have tons of money left over.

Right.

I’d want the Tigers to take at least some of the Soriano deal.

I think what jpeters is saying...

…is that the Tigers take on ALL of Soriano’s contract, plus they get Garza, for Turner. There’s no way they do this, but a guy can dream!

by cubswynn on Jan 17, 2012 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

The TIgers aren’t sure they want to move Turner in a deal for Garza and the Cubs sweeten the pot by throwing in Soriano and his contract!

A guy can dream can't he?

And yes I would take Oswalt for one year at what he is asking and flip him at the deadline. If we did happen to be in the running you could keep him. Theo wants nine starters and we only have eight.(Garza, Dempster, Volstad, TWood, Maholm, Wells, Coleman, and Sonnanstine) if you don’t count Shark.

Too bad

And its sad that Soriano is the very first thing I thought of too when I read the news.

Well that blows

Since that knocks their chances down now for a repeat postseason run, think that’d change their view on acquiring a new starter (cough) garza (cough)

Actually

… if they’re looking for a stopgap, Carlos Pena would be just about right for them. That doesn’t help the Cubs, but he’d fit pretty well there.

Would Cabrera be content DHing?

Pena would be a big upgrade defensively over Cabrera at 1B.

by RynoRooter on Jan 17, 2012 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Pena had some good years in the early 2000s ...

on some terrible Detroit teams. Not saying this would figure in to any decision.

I'm guessing Theo will have to take a number...

…seeing as how I’m sure the agents for Vlad, Pena, Matsui, DLee and Damon are probably clogging up the lines.

Oh, and how could I forget Manny?

I don't see it.

If I was the Tigers, I’d call Carlos Pena or another FA before taking on Soriano.

I’d be shocked if Soriano is moved anywhere this off-season.

by rlpete on Jan 17, 2012 2:47 PM CST reply actions

It might cost them $10 million for Pena.

They could have three years of Soriano for not much more, if the Cubs are willing to eat $40 million of the deal.

This late in the game?

With very few options? Who’s going to give Pena a three-year deal?

Well it may not matter what he wants.

Who is giving him that? Fielder wants 10 years too.

Cubs will be going nowhere this season.

Ergo, Soriano will be going nowhere. As the old proverb says, wherever you go, there you are.

Soto?

Rather than thinking about dumping Soriano, which seems unlikely, what about including Soto in a trade with Garza?

Tigers

have a 25 year old catcher that slugged .500 last season.

by rlpete on Jan 17, 2012 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

They might be interested in Clevenger in a Garza deal

because their backup catcher is Gerald Laird, and I don’t think they have anyone on the verge at AAA. Clev could give them a decent lefty bat off the bench as well as being the backup catcher if Laird gets hurt or sucks.

But that’s about the extent of how this V-Mart news matters to the Cubs.

by cubzfan on Jan 17, 2012 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

one thing to make note

Soriano hit better than any DH did last season. Is it allowed to pay a player (Cubs) and then make it a one year deal(tigers)

Well I guess that means a 50+million DH for one season? Never mind :(

I was hoping he gets moved…

by RIP Slim on Jan 17, 2012 4:04 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Soriano would have been in the bottom third of DH's last season

v-mart is out for a year

why would they want 2 extra years of crap tacked onto it?

Just wee-un.

by jesus christos on Jan 17, 2012 5:08 PM CST reply actions

Because they are there to take the Cubs rejects.

John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?

by rlpete on Jan 17, 2012 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

It boils down...

to how bad the Cubs want to get rid of Soriano. I personally don’t see it, as he doesn’t seem to be a negative clubhouse presence, but I don’t really know what they’re thinking.

2 extra years of crap really isn’t crap. They’d only be paying 2 or 3 million each season. Soriano at 2-3 million isn’t a bad deal at all. They could release or trade him after this season and it wouldn’t matter. They get a cheap DH who has some—albeit limited—bounceback potential, can hit 25-30 HRs, and not have to watch him play defense.

I don’t know if it’d be worth it for the Cubs, depending on the deal.

Living here in Detroit area

and listening to Tiger’s GM Dombrowski talk about the situation, he is more inclined to look in house (Bosch or Delmon Young) and if he did Free Agency, he would be looking for only a 1-year commitment at best.

Speculation on Sports talk radio is that they go after Vald or someone like Pena, DLee or even Johnny Damon. Another angle is that they get more serious in their pursuit of Cespedes (stick him in LF and move Delmon Young to DH).

Someone brought up the possibility of Soriano from the Cubs and the radio host just about gagged on his microphone! Detroit doesn’t want Soriano (at any cost)!

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

by CubFanSince1970 on Jan 18, 2012 8:09 AM CST up reply actions

One thought I had would be to trade them Byrd to play LF and then put Young as their DH.

Obviously not the same production, but he might be a bit more valuable in that line up. It’s also only a 1 year commitment instead of the 3 that Soriano represents.

Maybe Byrd can sweeten the deal for Garza to get more prospects/better prospects?

by bdlugz on Jan 18, 2012 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

Byrd makes more sense than Soriano.

John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?

by rlpete on Jan 18, 2012 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

Release him?

Yes the Tigers could but that would still be a $5 or $6 million dollar hit depending on how much the Tigers pay him. I still don’t think Soriano makes any sense for them when there are other options out there.

by rlpete on Jan 18, 2012 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

Oh...

I don’t think the Tigers do this. There’s much better options. But I don’t think it’d be that much of a reach. Eating 5 million over 2 years is feasible. But I think they could definitely find a trading partner for such a small contract.

The only way Soriano is going anywhere this season

Is if the Cubs eat nearly his entire salary going forward and if they can find a partner with a hitter friendly stadium. I don’t think Soriano’s numbers get any better in Comerica.
