Should Darvish sign?

I expect that a deal will get done, just because these types of deals usually do get done.

That said, from Darvish’s perspective, I am not real sure I understand why. He will, as I understand, be a free agent after this season in Japan. So, if he pitched one more hear in Japan, where he is certainly comfortable and well compensated, he would have complete bargaining freedom in a year.

The Rangers are likely offering something on the order of $100M over ~5 years, including the posting fee, but, around half of that money will never see Darvish’s bank account. Financially, there is little doubt that Darvish would make more, possibly much more, in the long term if he were to wait a year and become a free agent. Also, he has at least given lip service to having preferred destinations (west coast), so he’d have that going for him as well.

but, keep in mind, the free agent pitching class is loaded next season.

for TOR starters, minus the potential extension candidates of course.

We'll see how loaded it is

There is certainly some depth there, but, the headliners are really Greinke, Hamels, and Cain. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Cain and Hamels extended and Greinke may not be a fit for some big market clubs.

i think Hamels wants to test the market. i don't have any info or anything,

just a gut feeling he’d like to see whats out there. maybe go somewhere that he’s “the man”. but you could be right. of course Darvish could go back and then have his choice of where he goes.

Re: Hamels

I would agree with your thoughts on Hamel. On the flipside, I will be pretty surprised if Cain gets to free agency.

I wouldn't be surprised by Cain either...

The Giants have a hell of a time trying to work out a payroll in the next year. They need to extend Lincecum too, don’t forget.

Think there's any chance Lincecum hits the market?

I know he’s the face of the franchise and all, but they seem to have had more arb disputes with him than Cain.

I don't think so...

It’s crazy though, he’s looking for 21 million as arb 3…. I’m not sure what kind of deal it takes to lock him up. 7 years 170 million?

Yeah, that contract is going to be insane.

Maybe he’s better left the Giants problem.

2 Years

My understanding is Yu can re-post next off-season (doesn’t make a ton of sense) or he has to wait until after the 2013 season to be an unrestricted free agent. He’d still be young, but I’d be pretty surprised if a deal doesn’t get done this afternoon.

For the Cubs sake, i hope the Rangers fail to sign him. It might incentivize them to package something too good to pass up for Garza and they’d probably make a good run at Fielder which could guarantee he’s out of the NL. Oh, and the Cubs could sign him in 2013 if the timing works out like we hope and he continues his dominance in Japan.

2013

I have seen that year as well, the part I am not sure of if that is referring to the 2013 offseason (i.e. one year from now) or after the 2013 season.

Regardless, it looks like he will sign with Texas.
