Another great article, Al!

Interesting story from this weekend’s Cub Convention related to this. I had recently purchased a wire photo from the 6/8/66 game showing Randy Hundley trotting home after hitting a grand slam. Kessinger (on deck) is gretting him, with Santo, Banks and Byron Browne wating after scoring. I showed it to Randy at Friday night’s autograph hunt, and he remembered it in detail, especially that it was off that “S.O.B Drysdale!” He also added that they needed a lot of grand slams that year to win games, which didn’t click for me until I read this article.

Sidenote: after reviewing the box score, Drysdale hit 3(!) Cubs that game, including Banks & Browne scoring in front of Hundley. 22 game loser Ellsworth actually won this game, played in a very brisk 2 hours, 7 minutes in front of 5,178 fans.

Ronnie

Had a banner year, possibly reaching his peak, as he hit in 28 straight games, and played shortly after a horrible beaning by Jack Fisher. He wore a “football” helmet like device, and was right back in there. Could you imagine a player on a last pace team in July, getting hit like that, and playing at all the rest of the year? Different era & different breed.

Surprised to see the Phils have never had a 100 loss season

as there have been some remarkably bad Phillies’ teams

Also, while you are technically correct the O’s have never lost 100 games, the franchise has multiple times as the St Louis Browns

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

Actually

I did miss one Orioles season. They lost 108 games in 1988, the year they started 0-21.

Would probably have lost 100 in 1972

… if not for the strike; finished 59-97.

1908

When all was right in the baseball world, the Cubs won the Series, and the Cardinals & Yankees (highlanders) both lost 100 games. Ah, I miss the good old days!
