If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid. I'm a Sheeple and proud of it!

I agree, it's perfect...

you know your artistic eye can really catch some cool photographs…you should expand your creations to include them.

I would settle for spring at this point

Football is over, that is the only good thing about winter. The possibility of some freezing rain/ snow overnight doesn’t thrill me either.

I'm not exactly sure what it is we are having this year.

It’s 55 degrees at 11 pm the wind is howling. My house just made the oddest noise & the rose bush branches are scraping against the screen on my bedroom window. I am ready for long days, warm temperatures, crickets & baseball.

I don’t want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it.

I am in the thick of Chinese New Year...

This is my seventh year here and am amazed anew each year. It does not matter where you are…you are either lighting the fireworks that shoot up in the sky or you team up with the thousands around you to begin shooting fireworks at all the mobs either across the street, on the roofs, hiding behind park cars etc. Nobody stays indoors and everybody is a target. Can’t count how many people left the park last night in an ambulance. I am waiting for my friends to arrive so we can head out and join a new war zone this evening. Absolutely stupid…but hard not to get caught up in the hoopla!

What I would give for a warm summer of Cubbie baseball!

Happy New Year!

this is definitely OT, but I was wondering (if you wouldn’t mind saying) what you were doing out there. My daughter will be graduating high school next year completing Chinese honors 4, and is now looking for colleges that have a more intense Chinese program….language, Asian Studies, etc. We really don’t know what’s out there besides teaching and translation. I’m not sure she’s interested in the business side, but then, how diverse can that be?

We run a consulting company specializing in international relations.

We have helped many start their own businesses by connecting them to foreign entities that are expanding/working in China. We also partner with numerous universities and businesses in foreign exchange for students, teachers, professionals, workers, and administrators. Our day-to-day work includes micro-finance, import/export, translation, and teaching. The big money maker is translation though.

The economy in China is booming like nothing else in the world. If your daughter can speak at a high level of Chinese the sky is the limit for what she can do over here. My degree is in accounting and my wife’s is speech pathology…but we could get jobs as loggers if we wanted to. They don’t care about your background, degree, skill-set, etc. If you can speak both Chinese and English fluently you can do anything you want.

wow, very interesting....thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question.

…and to think 3 years ago I wasn’t sure she should take Chinese, she loves it and is really really good at it—all A’s for three years….special thanks to Shanghai Badger for sharing his thoughts on that 3 years ago (time flies)

It's been -25 to -45 here since, oh, forever

But the days are getting longer at a pretty rapid clip, the auroras are back and out of this world, and pretty soon I’ll be listening to Len and not long after that I’ll be tuning in WGN with BCB on my lap and all will be right and good and back as it should be with peace, liberty and justice for all

by Emelie on Jan 24, 2012 7:36 AM CST reply actions

Brr.

We wanted to name our daughter Aurora, but that got shot down by everyone because they thought it sounded like we were naming her after the town of Aurora, IL. We had to explain how beautiful auroras were. We shouldn’t have listened to them. They are stupid.

Did you think about "Borealis"? Could go with "Alice" for short...

On the other hand, knowing how mean kids can be when in a group, they’d probably call her “Bore” at school. Never mind…

She's a big Alice Cooper fan and would have loved that!

As a matter of fact she just recently had to pick a “name” for a club she’s in and she picked Alice. Drats. Too bad we didn’t think of it.

So let me get this straight

1. You are a woman in Alaska, where the man to woman ratio is like 8:1.
2. You like baseball, even enough to follow it on the radio or TV.
3. You like the Cubs.
You must be the best woman in Alaska.

And it looks like a Space Hurricane is contributing to the auroras.
