Maybe.
But this probably doesn’t happen before the VMart injury.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I also saw something ...
about how VMart’s injury gives the Tigers several million in insurance. That could help in year one of the deal — though I have no idea about the Tigers’ long-term payroll commitments.

For the record,
VMART is one of the stupidest nicknames in baseball. Slightly behind ZPAC.

ZPac is Ryan Zimmerman of the Nats,
not sure if he still uses it or is called it, but Karl Ravech used to call him that on Baseball Tonight ca. 2008.
Unless its someone whose name starts with a K, there should be no -Mart suffix nicknames.

Even without V-Mart, that's a scary middle of the order.

What?
V-Mart would not have been good in 2012
Back this up.
In no healthy season in his career has V-Mart been worth less than 2.9 WAR. His season last year was consistent with what he’s done in his career.
Prior to his injury, what on earth points to him not being good in 2012?
He has 103 RBIs on 12 Home Runs in 2011
And some interesting research from Bill James states that no player has ever had 100 RBIs with less than 20 Home Runs, and then followed it with another 100 RBIs the next season. Some have come very close.
Producing that many RBIs on that little power is very rare. V-Mart hit a lot of line drives with Miguel Cabrera on base in front of him. A lot of line drives that would have to fall in again.
Unfortunately, now we won’t know if he’s be the first to get to 100 RBIs again.

I did overstate his most likely 2012 season
He probably would have been good, but it would have been doubtful that he could reach 100 RBIs in 2012.
There were one other player that had 100 RBIs and less than 13 HRs (my bad, just looked at the article again) in 2011 – Michael Young – 11 HRs and 106 RBIs. We’ll see what he does in 2012.

If he waws going to hit 5th behind Fielder
he wouldn’t have 100RBIs. Prince is pretty good at clearing the bases himself.

Absolutely.
At a certain point, which Fielder passed a long time ago, every pound is like an extra 4 to 6 pounds your knees have to carry. It’s almost a guarantee that part of his body will severely break down without some type of change to his weight. I also can’t imagine that as he gets older, that elbows or shoulders are going to hold up that well.
If they win a WS in the next five years though, does it make it worth it? I guess that’s the question, and I’m betting that’s what the Tigs GM is banking on.

yeah, but they could also afford to wait
until July and see who else is available. They should be right there in the NL Central with the team they have, so they may not have the urgency to do a deal right now.

Detroit isn't that bad
and it’s not like he’ll be living in Detroit. If he lives anywhere near there, I’d guess it would be in the Farmington Hills or Grosse Point area.
As for the city itself, the area around Ford Field and Comerica is fantastic. Greektown is right there as well, and that’s a fun part of the city. I will admit to not being that well schooled in the parts of that city outside of that general area, but as for around that park, it’s kinda nice.

Money is the biggest motivator for some, sure. But you’re making it sound like it’s the biggest motivator for all, which is absurd. Some people take lesser money for shorter commute, or work from home options, or better benefits, or due to the culture, etc. I could go on and on.

Those people are probably happier too
At some point you have to start doing the job that came with the higher salary. And for most people, the higher salary just means more stuff and bigger bills. If you didn’t take the job that made you happiest, imo you made the wrong choice.
It’s sad that there are people who can’t imagine even considering taking a lower salary at a job you like more.
And which of those things should Prince Fielder have taken into consideration above the $214 million?
I’m not trying to start a fight here, it’s just that given the large amounts of $ good FA baseball players get offered…not much else can really factor into the equation. Commute? They can afford to make that a moot point. Benefits? Nope again. Other than where they’ll have to play half of the games and live for the regular season…the $ is all that is going to matter for all most all of the Big Time FA Baseball Players.

Anger issues much? Yikes.
Since you’re having a really, really hard time understanding what I’m saying, I’ll try to make it easier for you…
I’m sure it’s quite nice to make 20M a year. But is 20M a year while living in a complete shithole of a city better than making, say, 16M a year while living somewhere you’d actually enjoy? To put it into more layman’s terms… if you were to be paid 120K to do whatever it is you do, but you’d have to live in rural Missouri… or you could be paid 110K to do that exact same thing but live in a great high rise in downtown Chicago, what would you do?

Who says.......
he’s going to live IN Detroit? Obviously-you’ve never been to Michigan and don’t realize there are many nice suburbs within 30 minutes or less.
Which were reviewed ad nauseum
All I know is, if I were signed to that much money to play for the Tigers, I probably would have a place in Farmington, and another in Petoskey. I then wouldn’t even bother with hanging out in the city of Detroit itself, which is the strategy followed by most people who live near Detroit.

No, she thinks she's right.
Detroit is equivalent to living in a third-world country. Every day Prince goes to the ballpark, he will be experiencing the same harrowing journey one sees when one watches Blackhawk Down. When he comes home, he takes his life into his own hands every time he opens the door, walks in front of a window, or drinks tap water without first boiling it for an hour.
What she fails to recognize is that, with Prince’s wealth, he can buy his way into the favor of the local warlords, hire an armored entourage (complete with M1A1 Abrams, an M2 Bradley, and an EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle), and has actually invested in a fully functioning replica of Iron Man’s suit.

He can't afford that AND all the armored vehicles. Duh!
Maybe Kanderber is onto something, after all….
OTOH...
…maybe he can get GM to make Hummers again, since they’re back to being number one and all, he’ll endorse them, and he can get them for free, as opposed to paying for all those armored vehicles. THEN he can buy Aquafina, Inc.?

How am I angry?
I completely get what you’re saying, but you’re ignoring the fact that I’m pointing out how shortsighted that is. Again, not everyone is all about big city living, so I’m not sure why you’re automatically assuming that’s how Prince is. Additionally, he’s played his career in Milwaukee up to this point. Do you think he spends his time living in Milwaukee, or living elsewhere or hanging out in other places. Regardless whether Detroit is a dump or not, nothing dictates that Prince must live within that city and spend his non-playing time there, and there’s very upscale areas outside of Detroit that he can spend his time in anyway.
I would also gladly take the $120K and live very comfortably in rural Missouri, in a very spacious home, than make $110k and barely get by in Chicago, which, by the way, wouldn’t come close to paying for a high rise there downtown. I really don’t think you understand the difference in economies from town to town, but whatever.
Does this make sense, or do I keep needing to bring up silly things, like logic and facts?

Well first off...
I acknowledged in my original reply to you that it wasn’t fair for me to assume Prince took this purely because of money. I thought that was clear, but look back up (maybe you missed it).
Secondly, 110K = barely getting by in Chicago? Umm… okay? It sounds like you’re the one who doesn’t understand cost of living differences… at all… not me.
Thirdly, and more topically, Detroit IS a dump. I just don’t get why you don’t understand why I might question why a player might want to commit to living there for 9 years versus somewhere that’s, you know, not a cesspool. That’s really what this discussion is all about. I understand that he’s not going to be living on the streets amongst gangbangers, but he’s still living in Detroit.
The man only has to live in Detroit during the baseball season.
And, there are nice parts of the Detroit metro area.
The rest of the year, he can live wherever he chooses.

I OWN a 5 bedroom, 2 and a half bath, with a full finished basement that is around 2600 sq ft for around $1050 a month. That’s here in the South Bend metro area where cost of living is significant different than downtown Chicago. If I wanted the same in Chicago, I would either not be able to find it, or I would barely be able to get by considering what the cost of rent or mortgage would be.

The Metro Detroit area is a great place overall to live. Sure, some parts of the inner city are a pit, but I could take you to many parts of Chicago that are unsafe and horrible eyesores as well!
I have lived in the suburbs for 30 years and the suburbs rock! Some of the best neighborhoods and towns in the country are right here scattered around the metro area.
Never felt unsafe going to a game and in fact, the cost of living is a lot better here than in Chicago. I can get a parking garage 3 blocks from Comerica Park for $6 and closer for no more than $10.
Besides, who cares where Prince Fielder might choose to live? I mean really, this is so stupid.

This will be interesting a few years down the road though, because we’re still not sure how Prince’s knees will hold up at his given weight, he may have to shred some poundage, but I’m sure we all have the feeling that Prince, even though he can play first, was signed primarily to play the DH like a David Ortiz.

Apparently, these long term deals are what it takes to sign the best players…don’t see that changing anytime soon because of the precedent that’s been set.
what?
In other words, how much money do you think Joey Votto will get after the 2013 season
when he is 30 years old? More or less than Fielder and Pujols?
At some point in the future, the Cubs are going to have to sign another FA to a long-term deal where the back end is a lot worse than the front end of the contract. All good teams that contend have them. Cardinals fans are going to regret Matt Holliday’s contract in 2 years, but that WS title they just won will make it sting a little less. I’d think the same would hold true for Tigers fans as well.
In a weak AL Central and with 2 elite players in their prime (Verlander/Cabrera), signing Fielder makes the Tigers the team to beat in their division for the next 4-5 years. How much revenue will those October games generate? How many more fans will attend games at Comerica Park to see a perennial contender?
Another way of saying this
is to simply look at how much better the Tigers were than any other AL Central team in 2012, add in the value of Fielder, and realize that they are now getting the additional bump needed to vault themselves from playoff-contender to World Series-leaders. Essentially they realized their peak value out of their players will be 2012 or 2013 and decided to sellout for a World Series in the next 2-3 years. I think it’s totally awesome and I’d totally do it to win a damn Series.

The Cubs are rebuilding. I get it.
It would have been stupid to sign Fielder now. But they’re going to have to spend this kind of money/years on a player to compete down the road. I just find it funny how almost everybody on here wanted to sign Pujols or Fielder a few months ago and now there’s cheers that we didn’t.
Meanwhile, the ticket prices are still some of the highest in the league and other teams like the Tigers and Angels are greatly improving.
For a few years.
What about when they’re strapped with those contracts that they won’t deserve anymore and are looking for money to keep their team intact and improving. It’s going to be in Soriano-like money, but worse. Just too long of deals.
In Theo and Jed I Trust
Nobody is rooting against spending money.
They want to spend it wisely over the proper amount of times for the right players. Pujols and Fielder would have put huge dents in the payroll and may be albatrossesby the end of their contracts. Plus we may not compete during the first year or two of the contract. And in case you missed it, we traded for baseball’s top first base prospect within the last month, so that has something to do with it.
You're really making unfounded generalizations and missing points left and right.
Almost no one on BCB was arguing for Pujols, and no one was arguing for him at 10 freaking years. I and others were hoping for Fielder, but not at nine (or really even eight) years. The call for Fielder was at a higher AAV for five or six years.
The reasons are simple:
The Cubs would have paid each guy $25 million or so a season to be the best player on bad teams in 2012-13.
They would have spent about that much (depending on backloading) in 2020-22, when both guys would have been past their primes. The fact that two AL teams who can use the DH to extend each player’s shelf life is really important to consider.
And the middle years would have been mediocre because resources would have been tied trying to restock veteran teams without the benefit of a fully resourced farm system. See the 2010 draft.
The Cubs will spend money again. But giving nine years to Fielder — with the rest of the cupboard so freaking bare and without a DH — would have been a horrible decision.

I was in favor of signing Fielder, but not to a deal this long
An aggressive 5-6 year deal may have made sense, but not this. Detroit effectively signed Prince to a 5/$130M deal (which could have made some sense) and then threw a 4/$84M deal on the end of it (which makes no sense at all).
A lot of it is sour grapes
I’ll admit, that’s a lot of scratch for a player. But a lot of people here think because you’ve been burned a few times by big contracts that you never should offer another one again.

“I feel like this is an offseason that may be coming from ownership or marketing, saying ‘we can’t lose 100 games again.’ In that situation the baseball operations department should say ‘do you want to win in the long term? Or do you want to just stink less in the short term?’
this is what he has said about teams coming off bad seasons that are trying to spend and build at the same time. It does not mix well, and basically sets up for a double fail instead.

Fact is, many of us here were willing to see TheoJed offer him a 5-7 year contract. It was when he constantly demanded 9-10 years that we balked. And we did that because most of us weren’t certain his body would hold up that long. I, personally, was hoping for a 5-7-year contract like nearly everyone else here.
For someone who makes unfounded and inaccurate generalizations left and right, this one right here is really a stretch. As I recall, you were the one criticizing those of us balking at a 9-10 year contract as not being true Cubs fans. However, I’d much rather see the guys in the front office thinking things over before they offer a contract, not just rushing into a contract and giving us what later turns out to be an albatross (see Soriano, Alfonso).

I don’t think I ever said balking at a 9-10 year deal meant you weren’t a true Cubs fan. I do think Fielder might have been had earlier for a 5-7 year deal with more money rather than more years.
And I’d say those generalizations are, more often than not, right on the money (no pun intended).

Well, I think we can blame Scott Boras for pushing as long a deal as Detroit gave them.
That would be my guess why the Cubs didn’t go after Fielder longer.

Why do you think he might have been had earlier for a 5-7 year deal?
There’s nothing to support that.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Five years? No way.
Six years? No way.
Seven? Maybe — but the AAV of that deal would’ve been ungodly.
Boras’ objective was to get Prince eight to 10 years and nothing was going to stop him. It’s funny — in a disturbing way — to think of all the baseball writers speculating about Prince taking a one-year deal to let the market reset. Scott Boras makes the market.
"[The Cubs] have a very famous tradition in baseball, and it will be nice to be part of turning it around." ~ Jamie Quirk, Bench Coach
And seven years at an ungodly high AAV ...
wouldn’t be that much better than nine years of a somewhat-godly AAV..
The Cubs’ best hope was that the Fielder market was so bad that he might take a 6-year, $25 million deal. NBF is saying the Cubs could have dazzled him earlier in the offseason with such an offer — but that’s not how Boras operates. Remember how late in the offseason the Cubs signed Maddux in 2004?
Boras probably figured Washington was his best bet, until Detroit lost VMart. Then, he went strong at Illitch, who will look like Tom Hicks in about five years.
We should have probably guessed that Fielder wasn’t anything more than a longshot to come to Chicago when Sean Marshall was traded.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Yeah, you would
And I’d say those generalizations are, more often than not, right on the money

Step Three: Patience. The plan is in place.
by Shanghai Badger on Jan 26, 2012 2:07 PM CST up reply actions
Then why wasn't he had for a 5-7 year deal?
Answer: Because Boras held out for a longer deal that also included more money. If he could have been had for less years, I’m sure he would be signed weeks ago.

So ... I'll say it:
This is really good news, for the following reasons:
1) Detroit is now out of the Cespedes bidding.
2) This further weakens the Cubs’ rivals in the NL Central.
3) It strengthens Theo’s bargaining position with Garza.
4) The Cubs won’t be on the hook for a Soriano contract (even a diet one) that began this offseason with the best of intentions.

Cabrera has been one of the top 3 most-dominant hitters in the American League the last couple of years, and an annual MVP candidate since he’s been in Detroit!
The Tigers are extremely happy with him and have no intentions of trading him.
He and Verlander are the two most popular players on the team (by a wide margin).

When did I say I wouldn't take him on the Cubs??
You don’t seem to understand the entire point of this discussion. Ishaffer simply pointed out that, with 3 high quality bats between 2 positions next year, the one with some serious off field issues may be a possible trade candidate. He’d still bring back a haul.
You come in and state that both off field issues have been settled and both only happened because he was drunk. Guess what, doesn’t matter if he was drunk – he’s still a spousal abuser and a drunk driver – I don’t really care how it was settled. Those are SERIOUS issues that could kill or put someone in jail for a very long time, and you’re asking me to give him the benefit of the doubt? Sorry, I don’t take either of those things lightly.
It’s a MAJOR concern if I’m the Tigers that something will happen again. Just like when we had Bradley – do you think he should be given the benefit of the doubt as well? I mean, he’s only had issues on 7 different teams, it might be different now, we should bring him back!
Cabrera doesn't have to move anywhere...
Martinez is out for most of, if not all of 2012. Cabrera and Fielder can split 1B/DH duties this season, Fielder is the better fielder, so he’ll likely play a little more at 1B. Honestly, my feeling is that Martinez will be traded before 2013, or they’ll try and move him to LF. Cabrera was atrocious at 3B, I can’t imagine them trying him there again. Its possible they could try and let Martinez catch again full time, but probably not a wise idea.

I'll see your loquacious and raise you multiloquent
When the little bluebird
Who has never said a word
Starts to sing Spring
When the little bluebell
At the bottom of the dell
Starts to ring Ding dong Ding dong
When the little blue clerk
In the middle of his work
Starts a tune to the moon up above
It is nature that is all
Simply telling us to fall in loveAnd that’s why birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in loveCold Cape Cod clams, ‘gainst their wish, do it
Even lazy jellyfish do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in loveI’ve heard that lizards and frogs do it
Layin’ on a rock
They say that roosters do it
With a doodle and cockSome Argentines, without means do it
I hear even Boston beans do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in loveWhen the little bluebird
Who has never said a word
starts to sing Spring spring spring
When the little bluebell
At the bottom of the dell
Starts to ring Ding ding ding
When the little blue clerk
In the middle of his work
Starts a tuneThe most refined lady bugs do it
When a gentleman calls
Moths in your rugs they do it
What’s the use of moth ballsThe chimpanzees in the zoos do it,
Some courageous kangaroos do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in loveI’m sure sometimes on the sly you do it
Maybe even you and I might do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love
I call with simplicity.
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

That's much too complicated for my taste...
Daft Punk does simplicity right:
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

it's the trust-falling seahorse
that makes it special.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

I think those are birds.
However, since I read your post, I can only see one bird, because I can’t not see a “trust-falling seahorse.”
you're such a chauvinist

As long as whoever has the role of the marlins is naked
Cuz the marlins in the picture are, and I’m all for paying attention to detail.
Honesty compels me to say,
every now and again something happens, that makes me feel like I’m living in an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Given the current state of the Cubs ...
the contracts required to sign most of those guys and the situations surrounding the ones who were traded … I have only one thing to say about your breakdown.
Keep up the good work, TheoJed.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
If I would ever not care about NBF talking about the dumb opinions of this fanbase
this would be the time.

Are there a bunch of Cubs fans
Who hang out on AZ Snakepit and only chime in when they can slam the Diamondbacks in some way? Just wondering what causes you to do this here on a constant basis.

How would he know?
I believe it’s been established that he is not a regular contributor at AZ Snakepit. But you can’t blame him for that. It’s hard to be this big of an autofellating asshole on two sites at once.

Wow.
We always knew someone was going to overpay for Fielder. It will be interesting to see how well he holds up during the course of this contract. I can’t see his body lasting for nine years, personally, but we will see.
