I also saw something ...

about how VMart’s injury gives the Tigers several million in insurance. That could help in year one of the deal — though I have no idea about the Tigers’ long-term payroll commitments.

For the record,

ZPac is Ryan Zimmerman of the Nats,

not sure if he still uses it or is called it, but Karl Ravech used to call him that on Baseball Tonight ca. 2008.

Unless its someone whose name starts with a K, there should be no -Mart suffix nicknames.

What?
V-Mart would not have been good in 2012

Back this up.

In no healthy season in his career has V-Mart been worth less than 2.9 WAR. His season last year was consistent with what he’s done in his career.

Prior to his injury, what on earth points to him not being good in 2012?

by Wreckard on Jan 24, 2012 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

He has 103 RBIs on 12 Home Runs in 2011

And some interesting research from Bill James states that no player has ever had 100 RBIs with less than 20 Home Runs, and then followed it with another 100 RBIs the next season. Some have come very close.

Producing that many RBIs on that little power is very rare. V-Mart hit a lot of line drives with Miguel Cabrera on base in front of him. A lot of line drives that would have to fall in again.

Unfortunately, now we won’t know if he’s be the first to get to 100 RBIs again.

I did overstate his most likely 2012 season

He probably would have been good, but it would have been doubtful that he could reach 100 RBIs in 2012.

There were one other player that had 100 RBIs and less than 13 HRs (my bad, just looked at the article again) in 2011 – Michael Young – 11 HRs and 106 RBIs. We’ll see what he does in 2012.

If he waws going to hit 5th behind Fielder

he wouldn’t have 100RBIs. Prince is pretty good at clearing the bases himself.

Absolutely.

At a certain point, which Fielder passed a long time ago, every pound is like an extra 4 to 6 pounds your knees have to carry. It’s almost a guarantee that part of his body will severely break down without some type of change to his weight. I also can’t imagine that as he gets older, that elbows or shoulders are going to hold up that well.

If they win a WS in the next five years though, does it make it worth it? I guess that’s the question, and I’m betting that’s what the Tigs GM is banking on.

As for the city itself, the area around Ford Field and Comerica is fantastic. Greektown is right there as well, and that’s a fun part of the city. I will admit to not being that well schooled in the parts of that city outside of that general area, but as for around that park, it’s kinda nice.

And yeah, I don’t see how Detroit doesn’t win the AL Central next year, unless things go very poorly.

Money is the biggest motivator for some, sure. But you’re making it sound like it’s the biggest motivator for all, which is absurd. Some people take lesser money for shorter commute, or work from home options, or better benefits, or due to the culture, etc. I could go on and on.

Those people are probably happier too

At some point you have to start doing the job that came with the higher salary. And for most people, the higher salary just means more stuff and bigger bills. If you didn’t take the job that made you happiest, imo you made the wrong choice.

It’s sad that there are people who can’t imagine even considering taking a lower salary at a job you like more.

And which of those things should Prince Fielder have taken into consideration above the $214 million?

I’m not trying to start a fight here, it’s just that given the large amounts of $ good FA baseball players get offered…not much else can really factor into the equation. Commute? They can afford to make that a moot point. Benefits? Nope again. Anger issues much? Yikes.

Since you’re having a really, really hard time understanding what I’m saying, I’ll try to make it easier for you…

I’m sure it’s quite nice to make 20M a year. But is 20M a year while living in a complete shithole of a city better than making, say, 16M a year while living somewhere you’d actually enjoy? To put it into more layman’s terms… if you were to be paid 120K to do whatever it is you do, but you’d have to live in rural Missouri… or you could be paid 110K to do that exact same thing but live in a great high rise in downtown Chicago, what would you do?

Does that make sense, or do I need to even further dumb it down for you to be able to understand? This is unbelievably straight forward here.

All I know is, if I were signed to that much money to play for the Tigers, I probably would have a place in Farmington, and another in Petoskey. I then wouldn’t even bother with hanging out in the city of Detroit itself, which is the strategy followed by most people who live near Detroit.

No, she thinks she's right.

Detroit is equivalent to living in a third-world country. Every day Prince goes to the ballpark, he will be experiencing the same harrowing journey one sees when one watches Blackhawk Down. When he comes home, he takes his life into his own hands every time he opens the door, walks in front of a window, or drinks tap water without first boiling it for an hour.

What she fails to recognize is that, with Prince’s wealth, he can buy his way into the favor of the local warlords, hire an armored entourage (complete with M1A1 Abrams, an M2 Bradley, and an EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle), and has actually invested in a fully functioning replica of Iron Man’s suit.

How am I angry?

I completely get what you’re saying, but you’re ignoring the fact that I’m pointing out how shortsighted that is. Again, not everyone is all about big city living, so I’m not sure why you’re automatically assuming that’s how Prince is. Additionally, he’s played his career in Milwaukee up to this point. Do you think he spends his time living in Milwaukee, or living elsewhere or hanging out in other places. Regardless whether Detroit is a dump or not, nothing dictates that Prince must live within that city and spend his non-playing time there, and there’s very upscale areas outside of Detroit that he can spend his time in anyway.

I would also gladly take the $120K and live very comfortably in rural Missouri, in a very spacious home, than make $110k and barely get by in Chicago, which, by the way, wouldn’t come close to paying for a high rise there downtown. I really don’t think you understand the difference in economies from town to town, but whatever.

Does this make sense, or do I keep needing to bring up silly things, like logic and facts?

www.facebook.com/craighudak

by Craig in South Bend on Jan 24, 2012 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Well first off...

I acknowledged in my original reply to you that it wasn’t fair for me to assume Prince took this purely because of money. I thought that was clear, but look back up (maybe you missed it).

Secondly, 110K = barely getting by in Chicago? Umm… okay? It sounds like you’re the one who doesn’t understand cost of living differences… at all… not me.

Thirdly, and more topically, Detroit IS a dump. I just don’t get why you don’t understand why I might question why a player might want to commit to living there for 9 years versus somewhere that’s, you know, not a cesspool. That’s really what this discussion is all about. I understand that he’s not going to be living on the streets amongst gangbangers, but he’s still living in Detroit.

A 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1300 sq ft condo in downtown chicago costs...

about $2000+ a month, depending on where you’re looking.

I OWN a 5 bedroom, 2 and a half bath, with a full finished basement that is around 2600 sq ft for around $1050 a month. That’s here in the South Bend metro area where cost of living is significant different than downtown Chicago. If I wanted the same in Chicago, I would either not be able to find it, or I would barely be able to get by considering what the cost of rent or mortgage would be.

Of course you can get a comparable home...

But in my 2200 sq. foot home in the Western burbs, buy taxes would make up about 60% of the cost of his monthly payments alone.

by bdlugz on Jan 25, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

But it's funny to think about that as the point of comparison.

When you hear about local athletes living in Chicago, where do they end up? Lincoln Park, Old Irving Park, Wrigleyville, and the suburbs. They’re not springing to pay to live in those high rise even with their disposable income.

I'm kind of surprised, but then, I'm not...

It’s the Tigers, and this isn’t their first shocker… With what they have now though, they’re no doubt the favorites for the AL Central next season and maybe for the next three or four years unless the Sox and the Twins can rebuild, maybe the Tribe can throw something at them but I doubt it.

This will be interesting a few years down the road though, because we’re still not sure how Prince’s knees will hold up at his given weight, he may have to shred some poundage, but I’m sure we all have the feeling that Prince, even though he can play first, was signed primarily to play the DH like a David Ortiz.

Those who keep saying they're happy...

…about not signing Prince or Albert, let’s see how thrilled you are when the Cubs are 65-97 for the next few years. It’s pretty obvious that you need to spend money to win a Championship and these guys are two of the premier players in the game.

Apparently, these long term deals are what it takes to sign the best players…don’t see that changing anytime soon because of the precedent that’s been set.

by magicblue on Jan 24, 2012 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

In other words, how much money do you think Joey Votto will get after the 2013 season

when he is 30 years old? More or less than Fielder and Pujols?

At some point in the future, the Cubs are going to have to sign another FA to a long-term deal where the back end is a lot worse than the front end of the contract. All good teams that contend have them. Cardinals fans are going to regret Matt Holliday’s contract in 2 years, but that WS title they just won will make it sting a little less. I’d think the same would hold true for Tigers fans as well.

In a weak AL Central and with 2 elite players in their prime (Verlander/Cabrera), signing Fielder makes the Tigers the team to beat in their division for the next 4-5 years. How much revenue will those October games generate? How many more fans will attend games at Comerica Park to see a perennial contender?

by magicblue on Jan 24, 2012 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

Another way of saying this

is to simply look at how much better the Tigers were than any other AL Central team in 2012, add in the value of Fielder, and realize that they are now getting the additional bump needed to vault themselves from playoff-contender to World Series-leaders. Essentially they realized their peak value out of their players will be 2012 or 2013 and decided to sellout for a World Series in the next 2-3 years. I think it’s totally awesome and I’d totally do it to win a damn Series.

Obviously from the this off season we see exactly how Theo will run the Cubs during his whole tenure, spend little $$$ not sign big name FA’s

/Sarcasm/

Spending copious amounts of $$$$$
is ok, but it has to be the right player and the right time.

Or maybe we could look @ his tenure @ BoSox and see he did spend big money and sometime got burned. Hopefully he’s learned from that.

Also, I’m glad all these teams are spending all this money on FA’s that I wouldn’t be happy if the Cubs did. All these big money long term contracts will hopefully strap these other teams in the long run and maybe the Cubs can take advantage of the market in the future.

The Cubs are rebuilding. I get it.

It would have been stupid to sign Fielder now. But they’re going to have to spend this kind of money/years on a player to compete down the road. I just find it funny how almost everybody on here wanted to sign Pujols or Fielder a few months ago and now there’s cheers that we didn’t.

Meanwhile, the ticket prices are still some of the highest in the league and other teams like the Tigers and Angels are greatly improving.

For a few years.

What about when they’re strapped with those contracts that they won’t deserve anymore and are looking for money to keep their team intact and improving. It’s going to be in Soriano-like money, but worse. Just too long of deals.

Nobody is rooting against spending money.

They want to spend it wisely over the proper amount of times for the right players. Pujols and Fielder would have put huge dents in the payroll and may be albatrossesby the end of their contracts. Plus we may not compete during the first year or two of the contract. And in case you missed it, we traded for baseball’s top first base prospect within the last month, so that has something to do with it.

I was in favor of signing Fielder, but not to a deal this long

An aggressive 5-6 year deal may have made sense, but not this. Detroit effectively signed Prince to a 5/$130M deal (which could have made some sense) and then threw a 4/$84M deal on the end of it (which makes no sense at all).

this is what he has said about teams coming off bad seasons that are trying to spend and build at the same time. It does not mix well, and basically sets up for a double fail instead.

B.S. B.S. B.S.

Fact is, many of us here were willing to see TheoJed offer him a 5-7 year contract. It was when he constantly demanded 9-10 years that we balked. And we did that because most of us weren’t certain his body would hold up that long. I, personally, was hoping for a 5-7-year contract like nearly everyone else here.

For someone who makes unfounded and inaccurate generalizations left and right, this one right here is really a stretch. As I recall, you were the one criticizing those of us balking at a 9-10 year contract as not being true Cubs fans. However, I’d much rather see the guys in the front office thinking things over before they offer a contract, not just rushing into a contract and giving us what later turns out to be an albatross (see Soriano, Alfonso).

Five years? No way.

Six years? No way.

Seven? Maybe — but the AAV of that deal would’ve been ungodly.

Boras’ objective was to get Prince eight to 10 years and nothing was going to stop him. It’s funny — in a disturbing way — to think of all the baseball writers speculating about Prince taking a one-year deal to let the market reset. Scott Boras makes the market.

And seven years at an ungodly high AAV ...

wouldn’t be that much better than nine years of a somewhat-godly AAV..

The Cubs’ best hope was that the Fielder market was so bad that he might take a 6-year, $25 million deal. NBF is saying the Cubs could have dazzled him earlier in the offseason with such an offer — but that’s not how Boras operates. Remember how late in the offseason the Cubs signed Maddux in 2004?

Boras probably figured Washington was his best bet, until Detroit lost VMart. Then, he went strong at Illitch, who will look like Tom Hicks in about five years.

We should have probably guessed that Fielder wasn’t anything more than a longshot to come to Chicago when Sean Marshall was traded.

When did I say I wouldn't take him on the Cubs??

You don’t seem to understand the entire point of this discussion. Ishaffer simply pointed out that, with 3 high quality bats between 2 positions next year, the one with some serious off field issues may be a possible trade candidate. He’d still bring back a haul.

You come in and state that both off field issues have been settled and both only happened because he was drunk. Guess what, doesn’t matter if he was drunk – he’s still a spousal abuser and a drunk driver – I don’t really care how it was settled. Those are SERIOUS issues that could kill or put someone in jail for a very long time, and you’re asking me to give him the benefit of the doubt? Sorry, I don’t take either of those things lightly.

It’s a MAJOR concern if I’m the Tigers that something will happen again. Just like when we had Bradley – do you think he should be given the benefit of the doubt as well? I mean, he’s only had issues on 7 different teams, it might be different now, we should bring him back!

by bdlugz on Jan 26, 2012 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Cabrera doesn't have to move anywhere...

Martinez is out for most of, if not all of 2012. Cabrera and Fielder can split 1B/DH duties this season, Fielder is the better fielder, so he’ll likely play a little more at 1B. Honestly, my feeling is that Martinez will be traded before 2013, or they’ll try and move him to LF. Cabrera was atrocious at 3B, I can’t imagine them trying him there again. Its possible they could try and let Martinez catch again full time, but probably not a wise idea.

Have to share this...

Many times a comment on BCB will make me think of a song, and if the mood strikes me, I’ll post the part of the lyrics that came to mind. In this case, “DO IT” reminded me of “Do The Hustle”. So I googled the song title to get the official lyrics (in case there’s some closet disco dudes on BCB just waiting to pounce on an error).

With that in mind, I now share with you the complete lyrics for “Do The Hustle”. I am in awe – never has there been a more deep and profound example of the art of songwriting…

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…….
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Do It
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…….
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Do It
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo……
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Do The Hustle

DO THE HUSTLE

Do The Hustle

Do The Hustle
Do The Hustle

Do The Hustle

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo………
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Do It
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo……..
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Do It

DO THE HUSTLE

Do The Hustle

DO THE HUSTLE

Do The Hustle

The Hustle's apparentlymuch more loquacious ancestor
Come on baby let’s do the twist
Come on baby let’s do the twist
Take me by my little hand and go like this
Ee-oh twist baby baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this
Come on little miss and do the twist

My daddy is sleepin’ and mama ain’t around
Yeah daddy is sleepin’ and mama ain’t around
We’re gonna twisty twisty twisty
’Til we turn the house down
Come on and twist yeah baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this
Come on little miss and do the twist

Yeah you should see my little Sis
You should see my my little Sis
She really knows how to rock
She knows how to twist
Come on and twist yeah baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this
Come on little miss and do the twist
Yeah rock on now
Yeah twist on now
Twist.

I'll see your loquacious and raise you multiloquent

When the little bluebird
Who has never said a word
Starts to sing Spring
When the little bluebell
At the bottom of the dell
Starts to ring Ding dong Ding dong
When the little blue clerk
In the middle of his work
Starts a tune to the moon up above
It is nature that is all
Simply telling us to fall in love

And that’s why birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

Cold Cape Cod clams, ‘gainst their wish, do it
Even lazy jellyfish do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

I’ve heard that lizards and frogs do it
Layin’ on a rock
They say that roosters do it
With a doodle and cock

Some Argentines, without means do it
I hear even Boston beans do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

When the little bluebird
Who has never said a word
starts to sing Spring spring spring
When the little bluebell
At the bottom of the dell
Starts to ring Ding ding ding
When the little blue clerk
In the middle of his work
Starts a tune

The most refined lady bugs do it
When a gentleman calls
Moths in your rugs they do it
What’s the use of moth balls

The chimpanzees in the zoos do it,
Some courageous kangaroos do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

I’m sure sometimes on the sly you do it
Maybe even you and I might do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love

I call with simplicity.
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?

Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?

Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
Why don’t we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us.
Why don’t we do it in the road?

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

However, since I read your post, I can only see one bird, because I can’t not see a “trust-falling seahorse.”

Given the current state of the Cubs ...

the contracts required to sign most of those guys and the situations surrounding the ones who were traded … I have only one thing to say about your breakdown.

Keep up the good work, TheoJed.

Are there a bunch of Cubs fans

Who hang out on AZ Snakepit and only chime in when they can slam the Diamondbacks in some way? Just wondering what causes you to do this here on a constant basis.

I believe it’s been established that he is not a regular contributor at AZ Snakepit. But you can’t blame him for that. It’s hard to be this big of an autofellating asshole on two sites at once.

We always knew someone was going to overpay for Fielder. It will be interesting to see how well he holds up during the course of this contract. I can’t see his body lasting for nine years, personally, but we will see.
