So does this make Castellanos attainable now? Since Cabrera is signed for 4 more years and Martinez is signed for 3 more so there seems to be a blockage.

I don't know if that's what the Cubs want for Garza

He’s their best chance to get some pitching prospects.

Evidently

The Cubs asked for Turner and him back for Garza

by B.Bruce on Jan 24, 2012 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

Turner would also have to be involved.

Theo and Jed will get a monster package or hold onto Garza.

Wow.

I bet he’ll be Aramis-esque over there.

Reading the tweet, I don't think Miggy at third is Plan A.

According to other links

… yes, that IS plan A.

ESPN is saying ...

Miggy at first, Fielder DH and Inge at third.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Jan 24, 2012 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

Inge is an excellent fielder but his hitting is nothing like it used to be.

I think they will move Miggy back to third. He will get more time at DH and Inge will get some playing time (but not too much).

Maybe this year.

But what about 2013 and 2014? Where does VMart play?

Catcher?

Seriously though at $12mm he’s not that hard to move.

Agreed.

Assuming V-Mart is healthy, he wouldn’t be hard to move with his salary.

That's the question, isn't it?

I wonder if they’d view Garza as a Matt Holiday-style rental?

2 years at $10 and possibly $14M

Adding $24M plus $10M on $106 would put them at $140M (isn’t that what the Cubs maxed out at?) And if they had insurance for Martinez it brings it down to $130M +/- without current arb increases. The question is whether they want to pay the prospects.

Cot's

is showing the Tigers at around $110M before adding Fielder (since the yearly isn’t known yet).

I wonder if Theo would ponder taking salary back (probably the $6M due to Inge) to get the Tigers to sweeten the pot. Perhaps Garza and a flyer prospect for Inge, Turner, Castellanos, and another SP prospect (ex. Smyly) or two.

To be clear, I don’t think the Cubs want or need Inge… but he’s not completely useless (negative WAR last year, but 2.1 each of the previous two seasons) and the goal would be to continue to build the prospect stash.

I don't see the Cubs doing that.

Maybe if Inge were signed for one year, but not two.

According to Cot's

2013 is a team option with a $500K buyout. So really, he is just signed for one year. $6M total ‘obligation’ ($5.5M in ‘12 then the buyout, assuming they don’t want him for $6M in ’13).

But if it is “just” $ that matters… the Cubs could simply offer to send along some cash instead of taking Inge back. I just figured taking the player back looks better on face for both parties.

Send them $2m with Garza and

take Inge if it nets us Turner, Castellanos and another SP prospect.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jan 25, 2012 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

I think this is logical

and after this year you can cut Inge if he’s terrible. I’d rather see Inge at 3rd and Stewart at 2nd this year than the current plan we have.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jan 25, 2012 8:42 AM CST up reply actions

No thanks.

Stewart isn’t really a second baseman. Played a handful of games there in 2008 and 2009, but 3B is his position.

Inge is old and awful. This is a rebuilding program — why shove a guy like that in there? Darwin Barney is a better player than Brandon Inge at this stage of their careers.

If Stewart can't play 2nd fair point

I do think Inge has something left in the tank and could be productive (.250 15-20HRs 80-85 RBI) if his knee is healthy now. Barney is Ryan Theriot 2.0 and within 2 years everybody on this blog will finally see it and bash him just like Theriot.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jan 25, 2012 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

Inge will be 35 in May.

His last really good year was… never. He was decent in 2009, but still only put up an OPS+ of 87 that year.

Enough of these retreads.

This team is going

nowhere this year and next year could be just as bad. Why not take a retread for 1 year possibly 2 years if it nets you 2 very good prospects that could be useful when you hope to contend in 2014 and beyond. I like Garza but the money he will demand I would rather see it spent on pitchers that I think are more front of the rotation pitchers. Now if Garza will sign a 5 year deal now worth $70 mil and a mutual option for year 6 @ $17 or $18 mil I would say make it happen.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jan 25, 2012 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

Because when you're going "nowhere"

… you’re actually building for a future. Acquiring Brandon Inge would be a classic Jim Hendry move.

Inge doesn't matter

you take him if that is what gets the deal done. Getting Inge for 1 maybe 2 years doesn’t block anybody. At $6mil a year you cut him if he’s terrible this season or somebody else is ready. Turner and Castellanos are the pieces that we want plus one other pitching prospect.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Jan 25, 2012 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

I mostly agree with your assessment of his ability

but, you did catch the part that I/we didn’t really care all that much about acquiring Inge, right? If that’s what it would take to facilitate a trade that nets the Cubs an even larger haul in prospects.

Whether Inge would be “useful” to the 2012 Cub season, which will largely be a 6 month spring training / assessment period, is mostly irrelevant.

Maybe that's how we get

Turner AND Castellanos. We pay some of Garza’s contract.

by tomas21 on Jan 24, 2012 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Maybe there are some creative options for the trade to still happen, but I doubt it. After ponying up that kind of cash, the Tigers are going to have maximize every young, cost-controlled asset they have.

LOVE to see Castellanos and Turner for Garza, BUT

Cabrera is below avg. at 3rd. With Third basemen not being fine wine and getting better with age they are going to need Castellanos in a few years when Miggy cant do it at all, and will have to be a DH. Plus it looks like the Tigers are taking a loss financially this year (unless they make it to the WS) so adding payroll will not be on their to-do list.
