I wonder if he will walk Albert? Assuming he makes it there.

So....

he will sit at home all season and then come out and manage one game?? THIS TIME IT COUNTS. What a joke

His last hurrah was winning the world series.

I mean I’m sure he’ll “want” to win, but there is a level of effort that is different when you have something at stake.

Its an exhibition game. I don’t personally like him, but he took his team to the World Series. He should manage the NL team.

how can it still be called an exhibition??

Essentially now its a 1 game playoff to see which league gets home field. Further evidence that Bud is a moron.

He's retired.

There is one precedent: Danny Murtaugh retired after managing the 1971 Pirates to the WS title, and managed the 1972 NL All-Stars.

Murtaugh also came back and managed the Pirates again from 1973 until his death after the 1976 season.

But that’s it.

He’ll also have his day in the sun when he’s inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Major league baseball needs to decide whether the ASG “Means something” or whether its an exhibition in which former managers can stage a farewell tour. It shouldn’t be both.

What happens if LaRussa makes a move that can be pointed to as the reason his team lost? You don’t think the NL players should be a little miffed that LaRussa can shrug his shoulders and go home, while they are now at a disadvantage in the World Series? I know I would be

How

Is Tony LaRussa going to do a worse job of this than Mike Matheny? You honestly think that in July of 2012, Mike Matheny is magically going to be a better manager than LaRussa?

If “This time it counts” means the game should be taken seriously, then LaRussa is a much better choice than a guy who has never managed a game in his life as I write this.

by chit0wn on Jan 24, 2012 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

He has every right to manage the game

Retired or not, he is not a player, he is a manager, you make it seem like he is a player. Totally different. This is what MLB does.

—John Mcgraw retired after the 1932 season and managed the National League in the first All-Star game the following year.

Danny Murtaugh managed the NL All-Star team in 1972 after stepping down following Pittsburgh’s 1971 World Series title.—

by MikeJW on Jan 24, 2012 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

Not quite right about John McGraw

… McGraw retired DURING the 1932 season for health reasons.

The 1933 All-Star Game was the first one. Connie Mack managed the AL team — his A’s did not win the AL in 1932.

The point is, this “rule” can be arbitrarily changed at any time by MLB. It’s not an immutable law of the universe.

From your description, you would think LaRussa had just managed Little League

You may not get this, but LaRussa is a professional and will seriously prepare for the All-Star game. And he does not shrug his shoulders at losing.

I am not overly angry at it but

it is in my opinion. I think it should be Ron Roenicke of the Brewers. Unfortunately the ASG means something these days. And Tony’s Integrity is in check since the Steroid era.

by lshaffer_69 on Jan 24, 2012 5:05 PM CST up reply actions

who should manage the team then?

A hack like Ron Roneicke who got destroyed in the dugout by LaRussa in the NLCS? If you want the NL to win, I could care less, then LaRussa is far and away the best man for the job.

By the way, there is precedent, John McGraw managed the first World Series after he had just retired.

by MikeJW on Jan 24, 2012 7:45 PM CST up reply actions

Not quite

John McGraw managed in the first ASG despite having retired the year before.

So there is precedent.

And what’s the alternative? Having Mike Matheny manage the team? Who wants that?

by Josh Timmers on Jan 24, 2012 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

Actually one more

According to the Yahoo article

McGraw retired after the 1932 season and managed the National League in the first All-Star game the following year.

"Just shut up and play" - Matt Garza
"Pain is inevitable, suffering is an option." - Dale Sveum

by RiskyBusiness on Jan 24, 2012 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

And again, that's not quite correct.

McGraw retired DURING the 1932 season due to ill health. The 1933 game, the first ASG, didn’t have set rules for who the manager would be. Connie Mack managed the AL team — his A’s did not win the AL in 1932.

Just a bit of research by the AP (where Yahoo got its story) would have put some meaning behind that statement, which was half wrong anyway.

And yet stranger things have happened

Bob Lemon was fired as Yankee manager in 1979 before the ASG. And he still managed the ASG that summer.

The honor of managing the All-Star game is still LaRussa’s. I see no reason to take the honor away from him or to presume that he will perform inadequately or unprofessionally since his retirement.

Well, if you don't know what to think, I do.

We’re now allowing a dude who is freaking RETIRED to manage the allstar game?

Are we going to allow recently retired baseball players to come back and play in the ASG too? How about Ken Griffey, can he play?

There’s also a real problem with allowing a man who has ZERO vested interest in the outcome of the game, managing a game that will determine home field advantage in the World Series. This is a truly stupid idea.

Will it have a HUGE impact? Maybe not, but these kinds of decisions are no-brainers, and Bud still manages to fuck them up.

Love your logic

Totally nonsensical.

Allowing a manager who last year got his team to the world series is in no way similar to allowing someone who has been retired for several years to come back and play in the game. Manager of the game is chosen in a totally different manner than the players.

I think LaRussa is a pud, but if you think he’s not going to care 100% who wins the game then you’re out to lunch.

How are the rules changed

Can you tell me where these rules are written down? I was always under the impression that “The winning manager of the Pennant winning team” got to manage the all-star game. That’s Tony LaRussa, not Mike Matheny.

Wouldn’t it be changing the rules to let Matheny manage?

by Josh Timmers on Jan 24, 2012 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

Further...

… there is precident for Matheny to not manage the game. When Dusty Baker left the Giants to manage the Cubs, Moises Alou, his Giants replacement did not get to manage the NL, Baker did.

I don't have a single problem with this

His team won the World Series. He has the right to do it.

I couldn’t possibly care less about the All-Star Game. I no longer watch it. And letting a retired manager work a game that determines home-field is no more offensive than requiring that every team be represented or letting fans vote on the participants. The game already be fubared, why not let the man come back?

And if he’s also managing against Ron Washington again, the NL should be favored for that reason alone, no matter how many overweight DHs go from the NL to the AL.

and why having TLR manage for it this year shouldn't be such a controversy

as a matter of fact as long as the ‘home-field’ determination remains for this exhibition game I think they should add a new gimmick each year – in 2013 maybe having a fan contest to win the opportunity to pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth -

And I guess why I'm arguing that this no big deal

If anything, this is a positive for the NL, because WTF does LaRussa care how many innings a pitcher goes or whose feelings get hurt over being on or off the roster?

I’m sure some stat-head can tell me all the reasons why homefield is important, but I just don’t really care. The AL won the thing a billion times in a row and the Marlins, Phillies, Cardinals (2006) and Giants managed to win.
