Yet another similarity between Al and Yoennis Cespedes
Cespedes Doesn’t Want Marlins

Step Three: Patience. The plan is in place.

I also heard they both defected from their native countries.

But after seeing their new stadium, a few of my friends in Miami don’t even want the Marlins anymore……….

This may be a key development...

…if Knobler’s report is accurate. FWIW, I’m going to ask him via Twitter to please write a complete post on his blog explaining this “feeling” he’s referring to. It’s maddeningly vague and he doesn’t appear to have written anything about it recently.

Yeah, I stand corrected (sit, actually).

This isn’t really a development, though it is an interesting wrinkle to the story that doesn’t seem to have gotten much attention.

Update

Knobler responded:

I wrote it in December. Not really a new development

Here’s the blogpost to which he’s probably referring. Important quote:

Also, Cespedes has told people that he plans to make his permanent home in the Dominican Republic, rather than in Miami, and may prefer to go to a team other than the Marlins.

I don’t really understand the conflict between living in the DR and playing in Miami, but there it is.

Maybe just channeling the presumption

That a Cuban would prefer to live and, by extension, work in Miami?

If Cespedes doesn’t care about living there, I suppose it follows that the Marlins don’t have the inside track by virtue of location alone.

Marlins' press release:
The Florida Marlins are proud to be innovators in the realm of enhancing the ballpark experience with our variety of epileptic seizure-inducing attractions. But today, we announce history.

Minor league teams are famous for hosting “shirt off our back” nights where players sign their jerseys and give them away. But the Miami Marlins intend to take this idea and get it ready for the big leagues.

During every Wednesday home game this season, our Mermaids will participate in our brand new “Lycra top off our front” promotion.

Lucky fans will have the opportunity to – let’s call it “interact” – with one of the Mermaids. Now that we’ve moved indoors, we didn’t want our fans to be deprived of all the allure of south Florida weather. So, to win the promotion, all fans have to do is make it rain.

All proceeds will benefit Miami Marlins’ charities, the tuition bills of the Mermaids who are just working their way through college, and to pay the electric bill to light up our new Technicolor Dream Home Run celebration.

For tickets or the option to buy champagne room VIP cards, just call 1-80-MERMAIDS.

We’ll see you at the ballpark!

I don't like his swing all that much

MLB network was showing a bunch of workout footage and a number of his hits and his swing looks real “noisy” to me (for lack of a better term). I mean yea—the guy has quads like Eric Heiden, but that doesn’t equate to investing a small fortune over a period of years.

I’m hard pressed to think of any good MLB players that are built like him—he’s more of a running back or LB type. But great ML players come in ALL shapes and sizes, so one never knows. We have to leave that to Theo’s minions to discern.

How about Bo Jackson?

He was built like a brick house, and I’d say he qualifies as “good.”

by CJK on Jan 26, 2012 8:27 AM CST up reply actions

Yea--I'd agree tha Bo qualifies as good

but when you look at his number ’89 was his one standout year and ’90 was a good year—with WARs of 2.4 and 3.6 respectively, but he was a much better football player.

He also came into the league at age 23. Cespedes is already 26 I believe? I just hope and assume that we’ll tread with caution. I’m pretty sure our homework has all been turned in. There have have been other guys who I thought maybe we could sign the last couple months—but did not. Our management looks like they know wht they’re doing.

It’s attractive to get what we hope is a good, mature player without having to spend the time drafting him or trading others and simply just pay. It seems like a nice shortcut.

"God, I always said I would never bother you about baseball, but if you could make this pain in my shoulder stop for ten minutes, I would really appreciate it."
Billy Chapel

by cubfever7 on Jan 26, 2012 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

What if...

If you know that Cespedes would have the career of Bo Jackson, would you want the Cubs to sign him?

Like, if he had exactly the same career path as shown for Bo on Baseball-Reference — 2 years figuring it out, a year of turning the corner, 2 years of being very good, and 3-4 years of struggling through injuries at basically replacement value before hanging ’em up.

Would you take that? Would you pay $30 million for it? How about $60 million?

by CJK on Jan 26, 2012 10:09 AM CST up reply actions

That's an interesting hypothetical

If I look at Bo’s best 4 years—he’s basically a .250 hitter with a ton of strikeouts and ranging from 22-32 HRs during that span. I remember him having an incredible arm and being a pretty good SB threat. He was not a particularly good outfielder though and was amongst the leaders in errors a couple times.

If I take Carlos Pena’s best 4 year stretch (which came at a later age and after injury), Pena was far more productive and is a far superior defender. Before the Rizzo trade I thought we could have used Pena..I think TB signed him for arounf $7M? But we seemed to have to interest in signing him—not sure what my point is except that a known commodity generates no excitement and someone who’s pretty much unknown and who’s getting slaughtered in the winter DR league right now has everyone excited.

So—would I want to pay Cespedes $60M locked in at age 26 for Bo Jackson #‘s? Yes, if he’s a better outfielder than Bo and a better BA would be nice. I’ve not heard a whole bunch on his plate discipline though, but I believe we’ve been told that he’s a good base runner.

It’d have been interersting to see what Bo could have done if his hip had not gotten dislocated.

And as the Great One said—Bo did NOT know hockey.

"God, I always said I would never bother you about baseball, but if you could make this pain in my shoulder stop for ten minutes, I would really appreciate it."
